Trailer: Nikki and the Robots (Joyride Laboratories)

While this concept trailer for upcoming platformer Nikki and the Robots doesn't exactly give much away in terms of how the game will play, there's just something about it that really appeals to me.

The protagonist Nikki cannot use weapons or equipment throughout the entire game, and instead enlists the help of robots. She can hack into terminals to take advantage of each robot's unique abilities, solving puzzles and overcoming obstacles.

Should hopefully be some good, solid fun. Nikki and the Robots is coming to PC, Linux and Max soon. Visit the official site for more details and some lovely screenshots.

Freeware Game Pick: DreamCherry (Rabid Media)

Dream Cherry is a NES-style platformer in which you play as Cherryboy, a cherry-headed hero who has to drive back the nightmarish creatures that seek to destroy everything in the realm of the Dream World. You can jump on or throw star at enemies to defeat them, although the latter method is preferable because some creatures will hurt you when you try to step on them.

One thing to take note of is that you have to do running jumps to clear most of the walls or obstacles that you come across in the game. If Cherryboy is in a stationary position before attempting a jump, the height of the leap will be much lower than when he is in motion.

There are five levels to play in this demo. (Windows, 9.05MB)

Browser Game Pick: Love Letter (Jonathan Whiting)

love.PNGUtterly loving the idea behind this one. Love Letter is a standard platforming collectathon with a twist - the first player to complete it will be allowed the change the title screen.

Created for the TIGSource 'A Game By Its Cover' competition, the idea is to collect all 50 hearts and not die a single time. The first person who manages to complete this feat will be able to change the love letter presented at the start of the game. It sounds a little risky - I mean, have you seen the kinds of things people write on the internet? - but I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what ends up being set in stone.

Browser Game Pick: Faultline (Nitrome)

Faultline is your fix of clever platforming for the day, hell, the week. You take control of a robot who can fire his hands at nodes, then fold the nodes over each other, taking entire sections of the level with them.

Whenever there are two purple nodes in view, clicking one and holding, then moving to the other and releasing will cause the entire level to fold together, losing everything that was between the two points. Hence, if there is a wall in the way, and it is between the two nodes, you can simply fold one node on to the other, and hey presto, the wall no longer exists. Nodes can then be clicked once more to retract your arms and reveal the level again.

It's really clever stuff, and you should play. Go and do this now.

GDC 2011 Celebrates 25th Anniversary, Calls For Papers, Adds Board Members

Game Developers Conference organizers have announced the opening of the call for submissions for the show, to be held in San Francisco on February 28th to March 4th 2011. The call for submissions to present lectures, roundtables and panel sessions for the 2011 Game GDC -- the historic 25th anniversary show -- is now open through Wednesday, August 25th.

The main GDC advisory board is looking for submissions in the following game-related areas/tracks: Audio, Business and Management, Game Design, Production, Programming and Visual Arts, to be showcased on the prestigious Wednesday to Friday main conference of Game Developers Conference 2011. (Submissions for the GDC Summits -- including the Independent Games Summit -- will open later in the year.)

A talk abstract is required alongside a more detailed description and speaker information, and the GDC Call For Papers page has multiple annotated examples of previous submissions, giving detailed, precise instructions on speaker criteria and the selection process.

Alongside this year's call for submissions, the GDC 2011 advisory board has been expanded, adding several leading industry figures in the social and independent gaming spaces.

In particular, new board members include Media Molecule studio director Siobhan Reddy (LittleBigPlanet 2), EA2D designer/programmer Soren Johnson (Civilization IV, Spore), independent developer Adam Saltsman (Canabalt, Flixel), and Playfish San Francisco GM Dan Fiden. Also added for their art and audio expertise respectively are Undead Labs' Steve Theodore and Microsoft's Scott Selfon.

Trailer: Where is my Heart? (die gute Fabrik)

Four new mini-trailers for the upcoming PSP game Where is my Heart? were posted on Bernie Schulenburg's site yesterday, demonstrating some gameplay and the clever Comic Panel Effect in motion. Basically what the Comic Panel Effect does is split up a level into small windows of various sizes before placing them randomly across the screen, and it is up to the player to figure out which piece goes where.

Browser Game Pick: Noggins (Chevy Ray Johnston)

Noggins is a unique arcade game about big, square heads. Presented with a variety of differently coloured and sized bonces, your job is to create a square of the same size and colour which fits perfectly around each.

It's a lot simplier to play than explain, so you're best to just have a go. It's all done against the clock, with later heads expanding and retracting and powerups available. I don't think I've seen anything like this concept-wise before, and the look on each subject's face did make me chuckle.
