Browser Game Pick: p0nd (The Peanut Gallery)

I've played numerous strange and twisted games in my time, but p0nd must surely rank up there with the weirdest I've seen. It's a one-button game, utilizing the space bar to make the protagonist breathe in and out.

Holding space will cause all the fresh air to enter his lungs - then you let go to make him breathe out. It's meant to be a very 'zen' experience, relaxing your nerves etc. In fact, it suggests you try breathing in and out with the character.

Then you get to a pond, and well, it all gets a bit silly. I'm not going to spoil it for you, but rest assured, you won't be expecting what happens next. Play it over at Peanut Gallery Games.

Freeware Game Pick: Man Enough (Daniel Remar, Erik Sjöstrand)

Man Enough is easily the most entertaining offering to come out of the No More Sweden game development jam, where a group of Swedish game developers get together for a weekend of mingling, drinking and game-making. In this collaborative project by Daniel Remar (Iji, Hero Core) and Erik Sjöstrand, you have to play four minigames at the same time while a catchy tune is repeated in the background.

There are only three buttons to use, and every time you press or hold a button some kind of action will happen in every minigame window. The first game is a straight-up vertical shooter, while the second is a dating sim with a suprise ending if you answer all of the questions correctly. The third window is a simple coin-collecting task, while the fourth involves assisting a shirtless man recover the golden Petri statue head. Holding the space key causes platforms to appear and bridge all gaps, and pressing the left or right cursor key instructs the man to move in the desired direction.

XBL Indie Game Pick: Sleepwalker (Robin and Sandy Debreuil)

Alas, this is not a remake of the classic Sleepwalker game for Amiga, but it's still pretty good fun. Created for the 48hour Winnipeg Game Jam, it's now been released as an Xbox Live Indie Game for $1 (80 MS points).

You play a sleepwalker who must be constantly walking. The idea is to reach the goal on each level via a variety of physics-based puzzles. The game was created as a test for Robin's Swf2XNA program, which allows Flash projects to be ported for release on the XBLIG system. On a side note, Swf2XNA is now live and available for download from Robin's blog.

It'd be nice if the video above had sound, but no matter - it's still good fun and worth a pop at a dollar. Grab it from the Xbox Marketplace.

Browser Game Pick: Cellcraft (Cellcraft Team)

Cellcraft is an educational strategy game based around living cells and organisms. A meteor is headed towards the planet, and your job is to create a organism which can save the Platypus species.

Presented with a bare cell, you're slowly introduced to a variety of organelles and acids which help your cell grow and defend itself. Viruses will attack at intervals, at which point it all gets a bit tower defensey. Most of the science stuff went right over my head, but its very informative and even comes with an encyclopedia from looking up any details. Apparently the team has been trying it out in classrooms and getting a positive response.

Illuminator Update: Full Version Released

The full version of Logan Ames' Action 52 remake Illuminator is out. This new build is feature complete, and comes with a new menu, a continue option, more light fixtures, an additional type of enemy to weaken with your torchlight, an end-game boss battle, and a proper ending to wrap things up when you've beaten the story mode.

Illluminator has to be the best entry submitted to Arthur Lee's Action 52 remake competition, which is high praise considering that gems like Streemerz and Jigsaw were already among the completed submissions. Trailer: Helsing's Fire (Ratloop)

Helsing's Fire is a new iOS puzzle game created by the Ratloop team, whose enviable portfolio includes the IGF finalists Rocketbirds: Revolution! and Mightier. The gameplay here involves defeating all enemies in every level using only your torch and a handful of tonics, and since the monsters are all colour-coded the order in which the tonics are used play an important part too.

There are ninety levels to beat in the Story Mode, split into three different worlds. Puzzles are randomly generated, hence replaying the game will always provide a slightly different challenge every time. Helsing's Fire is available from the App Store now for only $0.99.

Freeware Game Pick: Mirage (Grupp 1)

Mirage is a Unity-based action game in which you control a swarm of glass, out to explore a world filled with autumn leaves, branches, and plenty of sand. You take damage when colliding with a wall, but health can be restored by blasting the green crystals that you will encounter several times during your journey. There is a healthy amount of checkpoints too, and any enemies previously defeated will stay down even after you've respawned some distance away.

The entire game is basically just one long level capped by a boss fight, and can be beaten in about fifteen minutes or so. Download links for both Windows and Mac builds of the Mirage demo are located here. (Mac/Windows, 107MB)

Freeware Game Pick: Sync Simple (Xeronix Works)

Sync Simple is a tunnel shooter that comes with a basic level progression system, boss fights, and upgrades tied to your ship's capability to take damage. The level changes whenever you eliminate twenty-four aliens in the current area, and though the game starts out easy the enemies will eventually start to weave around and shoot back at you with their own weapons.

There are collectibles that upgrade your firepower, but if you get hit the guns will be weakened gradually until you're left with a single shot weapon. A collision with an invader or their projectile while in this state, and the ship explodes thus ending your mission abruptly.

Up to three power-up items can be amassed, and you will definitely need to hoard as many as you can get your hands on if you plan to survive longer than a minute on one life. Download Sync from here. (Windows, 2.05MB)

Browser Game Pick: Fishbane (Droqen)

Fishbane is a challenging platformer about a diver who explores the murky depths in the search for golden harpoons and goldfish.

The game's main concept revolves around the ability to throw a harpoon into a wall and then jump on top of it, using it as an extra platform for reaching higher ground. Fishbane can also throw a harpoon, then jump on top and ride it across chasms. The first level is simple enough, acting as a tutorial of sorts and easing you into the idea. From then on, however, it can get pretty difficult, and I got stuck numerous times before finding the solution.

Worth a pop, even if you do find yourself horribly baffled. Over at Newgrounds.

Trailer: Asylum (Senscape)

The trailer above (not for the faint of heart!) is from Agustin Cordes' brand new project for Senscape Interactive, described as a horror adventure game set inside an asylum called Hanwell Institute. If the developer's name sounds familiar to you, it's because he was part of the Nucleosys team that made Scratches (another Myst-style adventure game).

Asylum is only coming out sometime in 2011, but we're sure that Senscape will keep us updated with more screenshots and teasers in the coming months. Until then there's a couple of concept art and 'patient sessions' that can be viewed at the official site.
