Teknogames' Shoot First Updated

An update to Teknogames' action roguelike Shoot First was released yesterday, with several of the requested changes implemented to what is an already awesome game. No longer do you have to put up with eight-way directional mouse aiming controls, as the new and improved mouse aiming option now sports full 360-degree fine targeting rotation. The fullscreen feature has been reworked as well (no black borders), and should now function properly on all desktop resolutions.

Other notable changes include proper saving of customized key configurations and a small bug fix to an item pickup error. The cheat has not been removed from this version though, but it won't stay that way for long once the word on it gets out. Get the updated release of Shoot First here.

Announcement: Freeplay 2010 Program, Ticketing Details

Organizers of the independent games festival Freeplay 2010 had posted up a full list of their programs, sessions and speakers on their site, which include notable game designers such as Farbs (Jarrad Woods), Adams Saltsman, Conor O'Kane (developer of Harpooned), and Alexander Bruce (creator of Hazard: The Journey of Life), just to name a few. Freeplay 2010 will be held at the State Library of Victoria in Melbourne on the 14th and 15th of August.

Tickets for panel sessions are priced at $22, but the gaming expo (which we highlighted last month) is free and open to the public. Further information about Freeplay 2010, program schedules, session descriptions, speaker details and ticketing information can all be found at Freeplay's official site.

Browser Game Pick: Sanctuary 17 (Twofold Secret)

Sanctuary 17 is a dark exploration game created by the guys behind Where We Remain. A team are trapped underground, left to navigate a randomly generated map full of nasty robots.

It's initially hard going, as all the lights have been turned off and all you've got is a crappy laser gun. Eventually you'll stumble across some very useful pick-ups, including the likes of night-vision goggles and a stupidly powerful railgun. Just to make it all that little bit harder, you also have to manage your power levels. Running out of juice is not a good idea.

There are computer terminals to activate which slowly unravel the story, and three different endings to find. Give it a shot at Twofold Secret.

Platforming puzzler Limbo is finally released this Wednesday on Xbox Live Arcade, and to celebrate we're giving away a free copy to one lucky IndieGames reader.

To be in with the chance of winning this most wonderful prize, you need to do the Limbo. Yes, we mean the dance under a pole. If you're not 100% sure what the Limbo is exactly, Wikipedia is your friend. You don't have to use a pole for your dance - I mean, who has a pole and two stands lying about - but it must definitely be the Limbo.

Once you're ready, take a photo of yourself (or get someone to take it for you) doing the dance, then upload it to your favourite image site (we suggest TwitPic, Imageshack or simply Facebook). Finally, post the link to your photo in the comment section below, remembering to give your name and email address, or else we won't be able to give you the prize if you win! Freeware Game Pick: Nation of Reincars (Krimelo)

Nation of Reincars is a puzzle platformer created by Swedish developer Krimelo, where the player's objective is to reach the end of a level by figuring out the correct order of animals to reincarnate as. There are only five animals to choose from, and you can view a zoomed out map of the entire area by pressing the M key.

Note that checkpoint flags can only be placed on flat surfaces, and the game will also access the internet to submit your questions. Nation of Reincars is available to download from Krimelo's site. (Windows, 7.88MB)

Indie Games Arcade 2010 Now Open For Submissions

The Indie Games Arcade, part of the Eurogamer Expo, is now calling for submissions for this year's exhibition. The expo, which will run from the 1st - 3rd of October 2010, will house the arcade which will have on display recent and upcoming indie gaming releases.

Minimum requirements for applying are as follows:
A short description of your game
Screenshots of the game
A little background on you and/or your company
The anticipated release date

Videos are also recommended. The deadline for entering is the 13th of August, and it costs nothing to apply. More details on how to apply can be found over on the Indie Games Arcade site.

Game Developer Debuts Free 2010 Game Career Guide Issue

[We've been giving away a digital version of Game Developer magazine's Game Career Guide issue for three years now, and the latest edition has a lot of interesting and indie-centric content in it, so thought we might post it here - enjoy.]

For the third year running, Game Developer’s annual Game Career Guide, a special edition magazine devoted to helping aspiring video game creators and guided by the editors of the industry-leading Game Developer magazine, is being given away for free.

The special magazine is now available as a digital version in web-readable and PDF downloadable forms, including over 100 pages of content. The 2010 issue, with a special focus on providing its readers with clear methods to affordably start making games, builds on the success of last year’s edition.

The Game Career Guide's 2009 version saw more than 300,000 online page views from more than 32,000 people and a physical copy was distributed to over 30,000 people worldwide at major video game consumer and trade shows, including Penny Arcade Expo, E3 and GDC.

The Game Career Guide issue includes a version of Game Developer's famed salary report for entry-level jobs in video game development, and a major school directory list. It also includes articles about getting started with accessible but powerful development tools like Flash and Game Maker by indie creators Adam Saltsman and Jessie Venbrux.

Additionally within are a rundown of the many popular indie game competitions available to developers, a look at a number of highly-regarded student games that became commercial endeavors, and more.

Trailer: Air Forte (Blendo Games)

Air Forte is a brand new educational game from Brendon Chung (Gravity Bone, Flotilla), out now for Windows, Mac, Linux and Xbox 360. Designed with the young of age in mind, the objective in Air Forte is to fly your plane into the numbers, flags or words that meet the requirements of each level.

The game features three different game modes, multiplayer support for up to four players, an original soundtrack, and an online rankings table to submit your high scores to. Air Forte is only 400 MS Points on Xbox Live Indie Games, and demos for supported operating systems are all available from the official site.

Freeware Game Pick: Connection Road (D.K)

Connection Road is a Sokoban-style puzzler created by Japanese developer D.K and his friends, where the objective is to collect all diamonds in a stage so that you may progress to the next. You start out with pulling or pushing blocks out of the way, but things get a bit more complicated with the introduction of pipes a few levels in.

Players can walk in or out of pipes quite easily, and you can even push pipes into the water to form a bridge. Solving all thirty-seven stages might sound like a challenge, but it really only takes about an hour or two to beat the entire game. Get Connection Road here. (Windows, 7.25MB)
