Indie Games Arcade: Nidhogg (Messhof)

I've been gearing myself up for this one. Nidhogg is a two-player fencing game, and when it releases, it will be one of the best indie games you ever played. There's a reason the game won Rock Paper Shotgun's Game of the Arcade award, and I shall now explain it to you.

Nidhogg is quite simply far too much fun for its own good. Each player controls a guy with a sword, and can angle the sword at three different levels. The two characters rush towards each other, sword-tussle for a bit, then someone gets a poke in the eye, neck or groin and the ball moves into the victor's court. At this point, the winner must rush in one direction, through a series of screens and reach the end. However, the other player will spawn a few seconds after death, and if they can exact revenge, the focus shifts and it's their turn to pelt it off in the other direction.

Sounds simple enough, but it's the way Nidhogg feels to play that really gets your adrenaline pumping. There are so many different moves and reactions that can be made, and every single one of them feels fucking cool to pull off. Run at your opponent and hold down, and your guy will fall to his knees and slide through your enemy's legs - at this point you can keep running, or spin around and get him in the back.

Players can also throw their sword at any point, sending a spinning blade of hell to cut your friend down. Of course, then you don't have a sword, at which point you have a few options - you could run on and see how far you get before your friend respawns and returns the favour, or you can quickly run for your fallen sword and press down to grab it again. A third option is to make with the fisticuffs and beat the living daylights out of your respawned opponent.

You're going to enjoy Nidhogg, and then you're going to enjoy it some more. It will become your new favourite multiplayer game, and possibly your favourite multiplayer game ever. There's no word on a release date yet, but you can be sure that we'll be screaming it from the rooftops as soon as we know. Head over to Messhof's site for more info.

Gameplay Footage: Super Meat Boy (Team Meat)

Here's nearly fifteen minutes' worth of gameplay footage from the XBLA version Super Meat Boy, featuring all of the normal levels from Chapter 1 (Forest World) and several warp zones played through using the unlockable characters as well. The recorded audio is rather loud in this one, so you might want to turn down the volume a little bit before watching this clip.

The game officially comes out on the Xbox this October 20th, but quite a few players have already been playing Super Meat Boy early thanks to giveaway codes from a couple of ongoing contests online. We may also be giving away one or two codes to a few lucky readers sometime next week, so do keep an eye out for that.

Something For the Weekend: Super Meat Boy and IndieCade

This guys behind Indie Game: The Movie have put together yet another incredibly polished clip, this time of Edmund and Tommy of Team Meat.

The duo talk about Super Meat Boy's controls, and how they compare to the old Mario games. Super Meat Boy is out on Wednesday, and you should be very excited. We've recorded a podcast with the guys that will be appearing on Monday, so watch out for that!

Freeware Game Pick: Siamese Enemies (Krimelo)

Hurray, Krimelo's insane Siamese Enemies is finally out, and it's as messed up as we could have hoped for, especially after seeing that trailer. Two players take on the roles of conjoined twins, helping each other grab organs and reach the operating table.

Each player then must grab the organs and stitch them into their own body, while damaging the other player's body too. Finally, both players use their new organs to rush back to mother - whoever makes it there first wins. Depending on how many organs you put into your body, you'll be able to move faster, jump higher and experience less strange behaviour.

Weird and definitely wonderful, so make sure you grab a friend a try this one out. Download from Krimelo's blog (and thanks to both him and Scattle for pointing it out!)

Trailer: Super Crate Box (Vlambeer)

Super Crate Box is launching on Friday (22nd), so check out the trailer before you have a delve. It's all about the highscores, as you blast enemies with tons of different weird and wonderful weapons.

I've been giving the beta a go, and can report that it's simple yet brilliant stuff. Enemies pile in from the top of the screen, but your score doesn't depend on how many you kill - it's all about how many boxes you collect. Each crate grabbed will not only increase your score, but also change your weapon, and some of the weapons are far better than others. Having to completely swap tactics so regularly makes for an incredibly hectic experience.

Indie Games Arcade: Skulls of the Shogun (Haunted Temple Studios)

When I first posted the above trailer last month, we didn't really know much about Skulls of the Shogun other than it was a very pretty-looking Advance Wars style strategy game. I got the chance to play it at the Indie Games Arcade recently, and oh wow... now I must talk about it more. I really must.

Each team is made up of various undead skeleton creatures, of all which have special roles to play. You've got archers for long-range attacks, soldiers for getting in close and personal, healer guys for keeping the rest of the team alive, your king who must be defended at all costs... so basically, all the usual suspects in a strategy game. Yet it's all the little details and tactical decisions that make Skulls of the Shogun so much fun. Each player can only move five units during a turn, so deciding which to shuffle around is important. Units have a circle of influence in which they can toddle around, smashing anything in range.

Structures and fields scattered around the land must also be interacted with. Any unit can haunt a building, gaining you rice each turn - this can then be used to buy more units for your cause. Now we get to the game-changing part - kill an enemy, and they'll drop their skull. Every skull bagged will give a unit extra health and attack, but collect three skulls and your unit will explode with darkness and become a demon unit. Demon units are stupidly powerful, and can completely change the flow of battle.

There were plenty of times during play that I thought my team of the undead were goners, but Skulls of the Shogun isn't ready to drop someone out of the game that easily - fighting back when you're clearly the losing side is a struggle, but completely doable, especially if you can catch the other player off guard with some backhanded maneuver. The action is pretty slow-moving, yet it's always exciting to both watch and play.

Yet again one to watch out for from the Indie Games Arcade lineup! We're looking at a release sometime early next year for both Xbox Live Arcade and PC. Make sure you listen to the Indie Games Arcade podcast special we did a couple of weeks ago to hear Borut Pfeifer of Haunted Temple Studios talking about the game.

Browser Game Pick: Red Riot (BulletProof Arcade)

There just aren't enough Russian superheroes around these days, so it's good to see Red Riot taking to the skies and dealing with the rogue military threat we've been having problems with recently.

Red Riot is an arcade-style blaster in which you zoom around the sky, laying waste to tanks, towers and UFOs with upgradable lasers and special powers. Levels become progressively more difficult as you go along, although a lot of the unlockables require you buy nasty Mochi points which is a bit of a downer. It's also a little strange that there is no real indication of how much energy you have left - instead, Red Riot is suddenly start smoking, then die with just a couple more hits.

Entertaining enough, anyway. Go play at Bulletproof Arcade.

Browser Game Pick: Boondog (Matthew Hart and Miroslav Malesevic)

Originally a freeware game waaay back in 2008, Boondog has now been ported over to Flash for your browser gaming pleasure. The game is a platforming puzzler in which you press switches and push objects to reach the portal at the end.

Control-wise, it plays a little like Flashback or Prince of Persia, in that it leans more towards a puzzle game with ledges to grab and edges to step right up to. Each different move available to the hero is gradually explained, so you don't feel overwhelmed.

Very nice, and well worth a go if you missed it the first time around. Newgrounds ho!
