Trailer: Terraria

According to TIGSource, Terraria Online acquired its first fifteen minutes of fame when Minecraft's Notch linked to the game on his twitter. After watching the trailer and browsing through its list of features, I can see why this has landed on a growing number of 'must-have' lists.

Terraria Online, in some ways, feels like the 2D side-scrolling cousin to Minecraft. There are deep, dank catacombs. There is digging. There is a destructible environment, crafting, numerous enemies to lay siege on you. There is, inevitably, going to be a lot of sandbox-y fun. But that's not where the fun stops. On top of all that, there's more. A lot more.To give you an idea as to what to anticipate, it looks like Terraria Online will have rocket boots and characters like merchants that will move in once accommodations have reached their standards. In the future, up to 255 players might be supported simultaneously and given that the game features PVP, I can only imagine the chaos.

It only has epic boss fights with carnivorous eyeballs, enormous skeletons and swarms of little green men intent on breaking down your fortifications.

Trailer: No Time To Explain (tinyBuildGAMES)

There's a new trailer for No Time To Explain which shows more of the gameplay and a couple of the crazy boss battles. Just from this short clip, I can already tell that this game will make me cry many times over, and yet I won't be able to stop.

It's due for release in the summer for "$10 or more", but if you pay $5 on the Kickstarter page right now, then you'll bag yourself a pre-order. Probably a good idea if you're interested! Check out the previous trailer for some more gameplay footage.

Tiny Hawk Plagiarized as Tiny Skater on App Store

I'm not really sure why Apple keeps accepting App submissions from Domi Games (also known as EdisonGame and Yan Zhenhua), famously known for ripping off Halfbot's The Blocks Cometh wholesale and having the nerves to sell it on the App Store as one of their own products. Now you might say that developers can't stop others from copying elements in their games, but when the tutorial levels and instructions are exactly the same as Pekka Kujansuu's Flash game then that's basically them profiting from another developer's work without any care or remorse.

Pekuja isn't happy about the whole matter of course, and he's already asked everyone not to purchase the game. Tiny Skater (right inset) has been out since April 19th, and since the original developer doesn't have a similar product for iOS devices he's having a hard time convincing Apple to remove the game from the App Store. Pekka himself isn't working on an iPhone version of Tiny Hawk, but he's expressed interest in porting it if there's demand for the game on portable devices. Until then, you can play the Flash version of Tiny Hawk here.

Indie Game Pick: The Tiny Bang Story (Colibri Games)

The Tiny Bang Story is a charming point-and-click puzzle game set on a world called Tiny Planet, which had been shattered into pieces when an asteroid blew up in its vicinity. Your task here is to help its inhabitants rebuild their home by collecting the puzzle pieces one at a time, searching through a variety of hand-drawn locations spread over five chapters in total. 

The Russian development team consisting of just two people (Eduard Arutyunyan and Dmitry Sannikov) had spent just slightly more than a year creating The Tiny Bang Story from scratch. It's available to purchase now from Steam, GamersGate and MacGameStore for the PC and Mac, and will be coming soon for both the iPad and Android once the ports are ready for distribution. The 85 / 120 MB demo that's up on Colibri's site features the first chapter that can be played through in its entirety, and Steam is offering a 10% discount off the $15 price if the game is purchased from them before April 29th.

On behalf of 'the management', we'd like to welcome you to the new While largely a cosmetic redesign right now, the upgrade to MovableType 5 and the snazzy new design (thanks, Nadine Lessio!) should enable us to do a lot of cool things with the site in the future in terms of usability.

Freeware Game Pick: Life Fortress Volcabamba (Zakuro Fantasia)

Life Fortress Volcabamba is a horizontal-scrolling shooter which mimics the style of classic MSX games, created using a rather popular programming language in Japan called Hot Soup Processor (HSP). There are no power-up items or options to collect here, although you can change the direction of your shots using one of the two switching methods available for selection at the start of the game. Players can choose to set the direction of their shots by pressing the fire button and a cursor key at the same time, or have their shots rotated clockwise whenever the X key is pressed.

The game features six stages to play through (the final stage is only accessible after you've collected all of the green-coloured volca stones), but chances are that very few people have the necessary skills to beat the entire thing without turning Japanese first. Fortunately for us there's a recording of a complete playthrough for Life Fortress Volcabamba on Nico Nico video, which had also been kindly mirrored on YouTube by Trilobyte.

Perhaps if this game was made and released on an actual MSX console twenty-five years earlier, it could have turned out to be a cult favorite among fans of classic console shmups. Life Fortress Volcabamba is available to download from here, although you'll need to find a missing msvcr71.dll file online and place it in the folder with the unzipped content before the game will run properly. Windows only.

Browser Game Pick: Soul Brother (Jasper Byrne)

Soul Brother is a 2D puzzle platformer that focuses on the concept of possessing other characters to overcome challenges and solve puzzles. The gimmick here is that you inherit the ability of the creature that your soul transfers into, which could be anything from being able to execute double jumps, push heavy objects, fly, and even smash through breakable floor tiles to reveal hidden areas.

There's quite a bit of trial and error involved in finding the solution to some of the trickier areas, and the level will simply reset back to its original state when we run out of bodies to possess in the vicinity. Your progress is also saved automatically whenever you enter a new room, although it's quite unlikely that you'll need more than two or three short sessions to beat the entire thing.

Soul Brother is playable now over at Adult Swim Games.
