Ramiro Corbetta Talks About Hokra, No Quarter and Colors

Kill Screen had described Hokra as 'NBA Jam for minimalist junkies' while others have called it the 'Nintendo Ice Hockey of indie games'. Regardless of how you perceive Ramiro Corbetta's latest creation, one thing's for sure.

Hokra is fun. Ridiculously fun, in fact.

The throng of people that made an appearance at No Quarter's inaugural ceremony certainly agreed. "Four people would be playing but there'd always be, like, ten or fifteen watching at any given time. " Ramiro Corbetta, best known for his involvement with Glow Artisan, had enthused during a recent interview. "The best game I saw was towards the end of the night. Two teams were playing and I think they were really good because you could hear the crowd cheering them on. I think it ended on an exciting note because suddenly, there was applause."

Interview: Indie Fund Supports The Mesmerizing Dear Esther

Like many individuals who undertake artistic endeavors, Dan Pinchbeck found that his desire to create and spread his art and ideas led him down a path he never could have predicted.

Conceived as a research project by Pinchbeck and a team at the University of Portsmouth, his experimental game Dear Esther is a Source engine mod released in 2007, with the most recent version of the mod arriving in 2009, the same year it won the best world/story award at the IndieCade festival.

But that didn't mark the end of Pinchbeck's journey with Dear Esther. Indie Fund - a collective that funds unique indie games - is betting that gamers are ready for subtler, more powerful, more meaningful experiences. Now the group has told Gamasutra that it selected Dear Esther as its fourth game in its increasingly compelling stable of funded titles.

What Indie Fund will do is help Pinchbeck and his small team finish bringing Dear Esther from an academic experimental Half-Life 2 Source mod to a full commercial release that utilizes the Portal 2 version of Valve Software's engine.

Freeware Game Pick: Flicker (Thunderware Games)

flicker.jpgFlicker plays on the old issue that Atari games used to have, where the screen would flicker if too many objects were visible at the same time. You are a religious enthusiast who decides to go back in time one year and destroy the human race. Like you do.

As you shoot at the sun, it will begin to throw fireballs your way, and rather quickly both your main character and all the enemies will begin to flicker uncontrollably. The Thunderware Games guys believe that, rather than making the game unplayable, it adds a new level of excitement as you try to concentrate on where you are and what you're shooting at.

It's worth reading the readme that comes with the game to see some of the finer points of play. Give it a download from Gamejolt.

Trailer: The Alone Sword (Calvin French)

We should pay attention to The Alone Sword, simply because it has a premise that is impossible not to smile about. Aliens visit Earth many years after humans have died out, and after probing our thoughts, find a strange concept in our heads about a legend, a princess and a hero called Link.

The aliens decide to build this vision to better understand why the human race enjoyed it so much. You are a sea creature who is given the role of 'The Hero', and you must battle, collect and do many Zelda-like things to help the aliens understand the human race.

See, told you it was awesome. Calvin is currently looking for sponsorship, so expect to see this released soon.

Suggest A Map, Win Frozen Synapse

Frozen Synapse was released last week, and has since gathered itself some mighty fine reviews. It's a turn-based strategy title that you can play both online against friends, or offline in the meaty campaign mode. If you have any interest in strategy titles whatsoever, it's pretty much essential gaming.

Now to the bit you're really interested in - we've got 10 copies of the game to give away, and you could be one of the lucky winners. The game allows you to make your own tactical maps, so we want to know what your perfect Frozen Synapse map would be. Perhaps you'd make your own house and try taking out your friends in the comfort of your own living room, or maybe recreate one of your favourite maps from another game. Let's just make sure to keep suggestions 'safe', please - e.g. suggesting a place of worship or putting forward other such obvious bad ideas will lead to your comment being deleted.

Trailer: Robo Surf (Bitsize Games)

Robo Surf is the first published title by Bitsize Games (a mobile division of Pieces Interactive, known for their work on Fret Nice and Puzzlegeddon) for the iOS and Android devices, with a free-to-play web version for the same game also set to be launched shortly afterwards. You play as the last robot on Earth who decides to go on an adventure and surf the sea across five different regions, grabbing oil barrels to charge his turbo power and defeating the bosses that it meets along the way. Robo isn't the only character that you can use in the game - Daniel Remar's Iji, the whimsical character from Blueberry Garden, and the robot from Pieces Interactive's Walkie Tonky also make special guest appearances here.

The game retails at ninety-nine cents in the App Store and Android Marketplace, but if you don't own an iOS or Android device you can still look forward to playing the web version of Robo Surf which is due to be released very soon.

"Those of you who have played Super Meat Boy on Steam today will notice there was a bit of an update. The Mac port is currently in development, the next XBLA internets update is also being worked on, and we will be starting game number 2 in a week."

Nimbus+ Coming To PSN

Released last year, Nimbus was fun. Really great fun, in fact. But you know what it was missing? A plus sign. Things are always better with a plus sign. The most wonderful news is upon us then, as Nimbus+ is coming to a PlayStation Network near you.

But what does that plus symbol mean? According to Noumenon Games, you're going to see new levels and content, as well as fixes and alterations to areas of the PC version that didn't gel so well. There's also mention of an editor, which I assume refers to a level editor, so let's fist-pump for that.

Don't worry, PC fans - the devs are planning on bringing as much of the new version over to the original release as possible, so you won't be left feeling sore. No release date as of yet, but we'll let you know when we know that they know. You know?

Trailer: La-Mulana (Nigoro)

There's now a firm Japanese release date for Nigoro's WiiWare 2D platformer La-Mulana, but fans worldwide would have to wait just a bit longer to find out when the game will be available to purchase in their respective countries. It will retail at 1200 Nintendo Points - slightly more expensive than most other WiiWare releases, but a real bargain considering the amount of content that Team Nigoro had managed to squeeze into every pore of the restrictive 40 MB Wiiware size limit.

A new trailer was also posted yesterday to prepare fans for the eventual arrival of La-Mulana on their shores, showcasing many of the redesigned enemies, locations, traps, and awesome-looking boss fights that you will have to contend with in the ruins of the lost civilization. Wii owners in Japan can download the game come June 21st, 2011.
