Browser Game Pick: Extreme Road Trip (Guillaume Germain)

When developer Guillaume Germain sent me Extreme Road Trip last month, it felt a little too simple to bring to the attention of IndieGames readers, although there was no denying there was a certain something to it. Now that it has been given the extra edge of a SoulEye soundtrack, there's just enough that I feel you should give it a few minutes of your time.

Gameplay is incredibly simple - you pick a car, then rush along a set of hilly terrains, flipping in the air and trying not to spend too much of your fuel. Every time you pull off a crazy stunt and land perfectly, you'll earn nitro boost, which will save on using your normal fuel. The idea is to get as far as you can without crashing or running out of gas.

It's still very tech demo-y, but there's a reason for that - Guillaume is planning on turning it into an iPhone version, and wanted to see whether people enjoyed it on the PC first. Give it a go and see what you think - it's strangely addictive.

Huge Terraria Update Adds New Items, Enemies, Features

There's been a huge update to Terraria, adding tons of new items, altering lots of stats here and there, and throwing in a series of new enemies to boot. It's a bit beefy, and will more than likely take yet another dozen hours of your free time away. It's all free as well, of course.

You can find all the details over on Steam, but highlights include a variety of Vanity items that alter your character's appearance, social slots for changing your appearance without changing your stats, and new overground jungles.

There's also lots of new enemies likes killer bunnies, bats, snatchers and a new boss, King Slime. A new NPC, the Clothier, can also join your village if you meet the required conditions. I've just skimmed the surface of this update - it scrolls down rather far, and you're best to just check it out yourself.

Absolutely brilliant stuff, and well worth the low asking price. If you haven't already checked it out, you should definitely do so now.

iPhone Game Pick: Greedy Bankers (Alistair Aitcheson)

The iOS version of Greedy Bankers is an updated port of Alistair Achiteson's Windows prototype for a puzzle game he designed back in mid-2010. You play as a banker trying to get his hands on as much loot and money as he can, since the game will end if you don't meet the cash objective before time runs out.

Larger gems can be created by combining the smaller ones, and you'll earn yourself a decent score bonus when a big jewel is collected as well. The further you get in Greedy Bankers, the harder it'll be to meet the level clear requirements. Robbers will also appear and try to steal your precious gems before you can cart them off to your treasury coffers.

Though a Windows version of Greedy Bankers exists, this bite-sized puzzle game does work better with touch screen controls. You won't find too many features in the iOS port - there's just the standard puzzle mode and little else outside of the instruction manual and credits screen.

Trailer: Rope! (Vicious Chocolate)

Created by a troope of art and programming students from Austria, Rope! looks absolutely gorgeous. There's no two ways about it. Made in the Unity Engine. Rope! is a surprisingly professional-looking 2.5D platformer that takes place somewhere in the outer reaches of space.

In production since early 2011, the press release that arrived in our collective mailboxes tells us that the game is in the final stages of production. We haven't had the opportunity to gets a hands-on just yet but if the trailer is any indication of possible brillance, it might be possible that we have a winner right here, folks!

E3 2011: Strange Rain - Possibility In Amnesia

Game designer Erik Loyer's Ruben & Lullaby was a finalist in the Achievement in Art category during the Independent Games Festival's 2nd annual mobile awards ceremony. His studio Opertoon's most recent iPhone and iPad release Strange Rain has just received a free update, providing further experiments in interactive storytelling.

One of the new features offered through the update is the ability to control how much rain is falling as the story unfolds, affecting the volume of the background audio. In addition, new music for the update has been contributed by composer Chris Schlarb, whose soundtrack to NightSky by Nifflas is available to stream in full on Bandcamp.

"Possibility in Amnesia" for Strange Rain (performed by Schlarb on acoustic nylon string guitar, Andrew Pompey on drums and cymbals, and Philip Glenn on violin) can be heard in the embedded player below, though this arrangement represents just one interpretation of the interactive score. The instrumental track unfolds dynamically within the context of the app, depending on how you play.

We had the chance to catch up with the designer and composer during the E3 Expo in Los Angeles to hear about these compelling additions to the experimental iOS application.

On the website for your studio Opertoon, you have expressed an interest in integrating together different disciplines, particularly game design, comics writing and music compostion. Would you describe a little further what it is you are interested in exploring in game design?

Erik Loyer: Pretty much my entire career I have been interested in combining storytelling, music and interactivity in some form. Comics have occasionally played a role as well, particularly with Ruben & Lullaby. Those are areas where I feel there is a lot of potential to explore in the context of touch and gesture-driven platforms, especially iOS.


E3 2011: Hands-on Impressions of Awesomenauts (Ronimo Games)

Oh, Ronimo Games, I'm sorry I doubted you. While rabidly excited about Awesomenauts, I've had reservations about your promise of a Metal Slug and Defense of the Ancients (DotA) mash-up. Familiarity, it seems, does indeed breed contempt and not only contempt of the familiar but also contempt of anything that doesn't match the familiar. As a Malaysian, I had grown up with DotA as a big part of my life and the idea of the genre suddenly made into a cartoony, 80's-inspired side-scrolling game just boggled my mind.

Super Goblin War Machine's New Expansion Free This Weekend

There's something enormously satisfying about Goblin War Machine. Then again, it's hard to go wrong with riding on a massive steam-punk contraption and plowing into towns, turrets, people and cows anyway. Super Goblin War Machine, the sequel to the original, is basically more of the same. It follows the old 'bigger, better and badder' formula, something that works incredibly well in its favor. I don't know about you but there's just something about throwing giant, house-sized hammers at things that warms my heart.

As an added bonus, Big Block Games is sort of doing a 'free to play' weekend for their new game's paid expansion. If players create an account over the weekend, they'll be able to access Dwarf Mines and make use of things like cow launchers and house-throwing weapons. Once the weekend is over, the expansion will stay yours. All it entails is registration this weekend.

The nD: Indie Handheld Game System

Mark this one down as an 'umm what?'. Robert Pelloni, the man behind the Duke Nukem Forever of indie games, Bob's Game, revealed earlier this year that he was making an indie gaming handheld system. Of course, most people decided it was all a big joke, and a publicity stunt for his game. The above trailer has now been released, and suddenly I don't know what to think anymore.

The proposed nD console will cost $19.99, and come with a copy of Bob's Game pre-loaded onto it. Apparently it will be come with an online app store that can be accessed on your computer, and the handheld will then plug into your computer via USB, and be able to download games straight onto it. It's also going to be open to any indies who wish to develop for it.

My initial reaction was that it's still clearly a hoax, but then I started to delve deeper into it, reading through the forums, the various posts Robert has made, and looking around the site he's built for it. It nearly seems real, then you read lines like "the nD plugs into a PC as a controller (with a screen, *cough cough*) to interact with our massively multiplayer tournament world."

What do we reckon then - is this going to be an actual product, or is it just yet another stunt to get people focusing on his tired old game?
