It has recently been proven that it is possible to divide by zero. The concept is called nullity. The BBC has a nice piece on it here:http://www.bbc.co.uk/berkshire/content/articles/2006/12/06/divide_zero_feature.shtml

The "nullity" business was crackpot meanderings. Just like every other attempt to divide by zero (which go back to the 400s or so), it is possible given the definitions to prove any number equal to any other number, i.e. 1=2. Sample proof that 1=2This is why division by zero is prohibited in the first place. Now, there are exotic higher maths (like on the surface of a Riemann Sphere, circa 19th century) where division by zero is possible, but it isn't the same as working in a normal arithmetical system.
