The Almighty Paintbrush is a level editor for Arthur 'Mr. Podunkian' Lee's game, The Underside. Podunkian has said that the level editor will be released soon, along with a version of The Underside engine that allows for simple mod support, which should allow for people to make their own level sets and stories within the engine. Though no release date has been set, the level editor is nearly complete, and all that really remains is to finish the modifications to the game engine as well as the documentation.

Nice. That's one under served niche of game making. Tools. I don't know about you guys, but I love seeing this stuff in action. :)

I'd like the actual game released more, but this is pretty cool.

And hey, maybe some premature fans will make the game and release is sooner than its so called creator. But it probably wouldn't be as good.

this is just a rip-off of Cave Story's editor ;p

this game looks like a cave story rip off.

this rip story looks like a cave game.

Who cares. If it's fun, it'll be fun. Even if it plays like Cave Story, it'll be fun. And what's wrong if it does look and play like it? I still play Cave Story, and it'd be nice to have new environments.

Apart from that, yes, the game was influenced by Cave Story, but it's not like Cave story wasn't also influenced by other games. Pixel had a unique visual style that was a composite of other styles as all art is. This, to me, doesn't even feel like Cave Stories style. It just feels like retro graphics done well. Is Pixel the only one who is allowed to do that?

@Splinter of Chaos
I'm pretty sure at least Raigan and Pixel Mort's comments were tongue in cheek :).

CAVE STORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Tim, these comments remind me of something I meant to ask you: can you block obnoxious commenters now?

Could everyone stop making "CAVE STORY RIPOFF" jokes, please? That subject has been beaten into mulch.
Instead, let us instead focus on editors/mods and how awesome they are.

Ah, level editors are grand things, they always increase the lifespan of any given game. I'm excited!

And I doubt it'd be possible to filter out every obnoxious poster on here but because they're so passe and they don't know just how lost in the past, cliche, and done they are... well, I'm inches away from writing a Firefox extension which strips out any post with the words 'cave story' in it just so I don't have to see them anymore.

Hey, if it was up to me, I'd ban everybody. For, against, whatever. I'm just sick of the circular "arguments".

I'm against banning them, myself. One should be grateful that less mature people speak, so that we can better understand how they think and help them to become better people in our responses to them. You never know, banning someone could lead to a suicide-murder in a school or something. :D

Should obnoxious people be banned in the past in order to be blocked from saying something intelligent in the future?

Well, don't consider that a well formed thought or anything. Though there certainly are *some* people who, in my opinion, ruin the experience for everyone else.

This shit never happened to Lyle in Cube Sector.

Hi, I'm new here. i played the Underside demo, and I have to say, I can't see any resemblance to Cave Story, other than the same one pixel look.

I really can't. the characters are different, the story is cool, and the dialogue is not the same.

The weapons look similar, and the level design does too, but I can just as easily say CS ripped the cheesedip out of Metroid and Castlevania.

CS has the same one pixel scheme as the original Metroid, plus similar environments in some places, yep, it's a ripoff.

There is honestly, from what it looks like, only one area near the beginning that could be called ripped off. The rest of what I've seen of the game, in videos and stuff, looks completely original. The enemies and characters look better, and honestly, I think I'll like this more than Cave Story.

Yes, I have been reading this website for a while now, but since I didn't have a blogger account, I could not post.

I, for one, hope this is as easy as, if not easier, to use as the Knytt Stories editor. Hopefully as powerful, too. I don't think I recall an editor being released before the game that utilizes it.

The makers of Portal sure haven't.
