Review by Anthony Pecorella

Areas, a new Flash game by Ridiculous, is an abstract arena shmup with no color, no text, no sound effects, no keyboard, and no clicking. What's left? A sublimely addictive game that generates a sense of claustrophobia and paranoia. This feeling of fear and desperation is compounded by a haunting musical piece composed by e-d.

The game features a very creative collection of power-ups and special weapons with some impressive firepower. Even more interesting, these power-ups have additive features, encouraging a lot of creativity from the player as they try to survive. With a non-trivial learning curve and 74 levels, Areas will challenge even the most seasoned gamer for hours.

Damn, level 10 manages to crush me every time. Fun game, at any rate.

For the life of me, I can't even figure out how to start it. :(

Hover your mouse over the play button. After a moment it will start.

Insufficient ring weapons for level 24. Played it 10 times and always will die.

After looking at some of the other games around here, I must say, my game is in good company. Very good company.

And Jr, about level 24 - it's all about observation. look at how the spirits move, and you'll undrestand what they're good for, how and when.

I finally beat all 74 stages. Very good game but I hate how some stages are based on luck on how frequent the weapon rings appear ("spirits"(I'm guessing you mean those guys) spawn rate in the white dots). Especially the stage with the scatter weapon and the only ring weapon was the "black hole" one. If the first or second white dot doesn't "drop" it you're practically dead. Even if it does, if white dots spawn around you, you're also dead.

Loved how there were stages that you had to combine the uses of the weapon rings, but as I said before some were too luck based because both of the rings had to appear near each other to be useful (like level 24).

I loved the 100% spawn rate stage of the booster rings. However it's too much trouble to go loading about 70 stages to find it again.
