Freeware Game Pick: Rom Check Fail (Farbs)
ROM CHECK FAIL is a new action game from the developer of Fishie Fishie and Polychromatic Funk Monkey. Players have to clear the screen of all enemies to complete each level, but the task is made a little more difficult by the random switching of gameplay rules where ideas are recycled and remastered as an odd mix of arcade or console classics from the past.
Use the arrow keys to move. The space key acts as an action button. Press the left alt and enter key to switch between full screen and windowed mode. The game has twenty stages in total. (more screenshots in the extended)

Rom Check Fail is a very weird game, it kinda reminds me of Wario Ware.

Great concept and execution, but for some reason playing this makes me feel almost sick.

Shuffling around the game elements of those classics is a lovely idea and it works just fine :D Very fun play. As I'm actually quite a bit younger than most or all of those games the nostalgia isn't really a big factor for me, but it still makes me grin when I can eat through lines of space invader(ghosts) as pacman :D
There's just 2 elements I'm not sure about: Where is the jet and where are the ghosts from?

Jet - Defender
Ghosts - Gauntlet
I'm glad you like it folks :D
Posted by: Farbs | March 24, 2008 3:41 PM
Ah, I've played either of the two. I've only seen Gauntlet, that's why the ghosts seemed reminiscent. Thanks :) I'm definitely going to try Defender, it's what I like the best about Rom Check Fail :D

Hey Tim, I've just added this to my games page. Could you change the link to point to it? http://www.farbs.org/games.html. I'm a little worried about bandwidth, and this'd help to redirect traffic if necessary.
Cheers again for the blog post :D :D :D

Hey, when I read about ROM Check Fail on the TIGSource Forums I was like "yeah, whatever" but now I'm utterly in love with the game - never expected it to be THAT good. :-D
One note: could you turn "autofire" off every time jumping is required? That, is, make it so that e.g. Mario doesn't jump all the time the space bar remains pressed (a simple de-press check would do that)? It's really weird as it is now. ;-)

By the way - you might want to alter the Space Invader "paddle-ship" a bit since most levels can't be beaten by simply moving left and right. It wouldn't be accurate but at least add to the gameplay.
P.S. I'm not that old as well but I utterly enjoy the game and apparently am old enough to recognize all the titles recycled in this one even though I'm usually not much of a retro-player.

The space invaders ship is just fine with its limitations. Without spoiling anything, the "ending" was great, and there's lot of replay value as everything keeps changing.

I also think it's fine the way it is. The space invaders ship is basically useless, but then again also some of the enemies are very easy to get rid of, while others can be a real pain :D
I also just finished it, very nice ending indeed. I wonder if this would have gotten you, farbs, killed, had this been made around 1980-1985. Spoilers, anyone? :D
If you ever run out of ideas for another game, I guess people would well appreciate a Rom Check Fail 2. I know I would :)

Absolutely fantastic! An homage and an innovative game bundled into one hot 'n' horny ..er... bundle!

There's no way I could have made this back then. Without an internet full of sprite rips, midi tunes, screenshots, and removed so I don't spoil the ending this project would have been impossible. I like to think of it as a collaborative effort by all humankind :D

I love that game!
Just came back from Tokyo, and I got addicted to Space Invader Extreme on the DS (12 hours playing it non-stop on the plane will do that to you), and seeing all those retro stuff in RCF (I'm lazy) gives me the same giggly feeling.
Bravo! Amazing idea, I just wish that it wouldn't use the Mame icon...

I have nothing but love for this game. Ily farbs.

the only wish i have is that it was customisable as in, how long it takes for a mashup, sound: on/off controls etc

ooooh! awesome! cannot wait for the embeddable release!

Game has been Kotaku'd if you didn't already know.
This is pretty sweet. Infuriating, but sweet nonetheless. Srsly though, the obscenities were being thrown rather liberally on the level shown in second screen (don't remember the number).

You NEED to make this for wiiware.. though at the same time, its all copyrighted stuff. not sure. you should though. VERY raddd!

Only annoying part of the game is when I get changed into Spy Hunter car or Space Invaders ship and I am stuck in a little section I can move out of. But I guess that is part of the rom failure!

Squinty vision hoy!
Wicked game, appreciate a higher resolution, even if it just doubles up the pixels...

great game...and with 31 different endings a classic :)...please o please someone convert this 4 GBA :)))

Game is great- except for the ice pick to the ear, soul rending sound that plays on the shifts. I can sort of appreciate its use, but at the same time, it's actually painful to hear.

This is a great example of what good Object Oriented Programming can make (or at least I hope that you used some good oop to make this ;P )

Alex: Hit alt-enter to go fullscreen
Mad Fnorder: Find some nice soothing 1 second Kenny G samples and use 'em to replace borked1.ogg, borked2.ogg etc in \res\audio.
gltovar: OOP did make this much easier, but I wouldn't claim that my use of it was particularly clean :D

REALLY great game ! The original idea is fantastic, the execution is perfect... Wow, two thumbs up !

Oh, man, this is so amazingly fun. I'll go throw this at gbadev and try to get support for a DS/GBA homebrew port.
Posted by: X-vid | March 30, 2008 9:10 PM
Thnx X-vid :) I see we share the same wish...but still this game is a perfect fit 4 Gba (since DS can play Gba roms ;)
this is my second post here but ill' repeat myself by saying that this is truly a great idea for a game, and it works flawlessly (the "hard to use" S.Invader sprite is a great inclusion because you have to plan your navigation so you don't get hurt when you have 2 use it) sorry 4 long post :)

BEST GAME EVER
Posted by: beam | March 31, 2008 7:02 PM
i like alot of this game, i really do. its honestly one of the most fun games i've played on pc in a while. but i REALLY hate the space invaders ship, i know in the original its only capable of side scrolling in two directions, but its just so aweful in alot of the levels for that reason, and often you are trapped and have no choice but to be raped by the enemies, please make the space invaders ship capable of movie from the top of the screen to the bottom aswell as side to side. thank. panopticon
