- Hey, folks - so if IndieGames.com readers could help us out for a second, we're conducting a v.brief anonymous survey (6 questions only, should take about 30 seconds to fill out!) to work out exactly who reads the Indie Games Blog.

Why? This site is operated by us folks at Think Services, which also runs things like Game Developers Conference and the Independent Games Festival, we're trying to work out more about the demographics and wants of the site readership.

Anyhow, the survey is completely optional, and as mentioned previously, the results will not be tied to any personal information or details you give us.

But if you do want some incentive to do it, we're giving away a set of 4 GameSetApparel T-shirts - including a neat Dan 'Alien Hominid/Castle Crashers' Paladin tee, among others - to one randomly picked survey filler-out.

[Please note that when you complete the survey, it'll just go back to the IndieGames.com homepage.]

Thanks!
Simon

You might remember the screenshots that were posted of this project ("2D side-scrolling WIP platformer, which is heavily influenced by Metroid Prime 1 and other games in the Metroid series") sometime back.

Well now there's a gameplay video and aside from YouTube screwing up the quality, it looks pretty sweet. I'm unsure about this getting to finishing point (it's only around 8% done) but there's always hope.

Read the development blog on 64 digits.

A friendly chat with Mark Johns, developer of Space Barnacle and Standard Bits.

Hi Mark, let's begin with a little introduction of yourself.

My name is Mark Johns. I'm 24 years old, recently graduated with a bachelor's degree in Math and Computer Science from a state university in Illinois.

My background is from the Macintosh, where I've released small shareware games off and on for around ten years, and only recently ventured into doing indie games for the PC, when I discovered the wealth of stuff going on in the last year through sites like TIGSource.

There used to be a decent community site called iDevGames, which would host Mac-based game development competitions, but the scene is not as active as it once was. If you're familiar with David Rosen (the Wolfire guy, who did Black Shades and Lugaru), he came out of that community as well. He's a really talented guy, but yeah the Mac scene is not as thriving as what you see on the Windows side now.

Once I discovered TIGSource and finally got a machine running XP, I went through and downloaded all the stuff on the recommended list. And it was really inspiring, and led directly into the stuff I've been doing recently.

Is there a central repository for all of your games?

Everything I've done in the last year for Windows is available on my blog, Doomlaser. A lot of my older Mac stuff is on sloppydisk.com. Those are more earlier works, and are all really clones.

After Doomsday is a new browser-based multiplayer RPG which was created by a team of two developers using a combination of PHP and MySQL. The game bears many resemblances to the popular Kingdom of Loathing and Twilight Heroes, is free to play, and requires only a simple registration process for account activation.

Stats can be increased temporarily by using item modifiers, or permanently by training and increasing your character's level. Weapons and armor can be purchased from a shop, though the game does emphasize on player versus player encounters to earn experience points. Other methods of gaining experience includes committing crime and heading downtown to defend the city. Many of these tasks can only be done a certain number of times every day, but the counter does reset once the clock strikes midnight.

The search tab can be used to find another player to attack. Most street games are relatively safe to play for additional money without being sent to the hospital, although you still run the risk of losing cash. Other cities are unlocked once you've successfully increased your character level to five or upwards. Players are advised to use the game guide as necessary for further instructions, explanation and tips on making the most out of limited resources.

2008_04_17_thumb.jpg [Our sister programming mag/website Dr Dobb's Journal has been running the Dr. Dobb's Challenge game competition in association with Microsoft Visual Studio, with $10,000 in prizes. There was an initial $1,000 'First Month Challenge' prize for modding the downloadable Windows game.

Here's contest organizer Mathew Kumar outlining the best entries and the 'First Month' winner - all worth checking out for game mod fun, and to see if you can do better for the final June deadline.

UPDATE: Please note that the games are much closer to 'hobbyist' mods created by Dobbs-reading programmers in their spare time than fully-fledged indie classics, so ameliorate your expectations accordingly.]

We'd like to thank everyone for entering the Dobbs First Month Challenge. We thought that even with $1,000 on the line to the best entrant with a month to develop a serviceable work-in progress, it was just going to be too much work for our regular readers who don't necessarily have a lot of time to develop indie games.

We were, happily, proven wrong and there's a fun crop of games now available up on the Dobbs Challenge Critic's Choice download section for you to check out -- including a one button fighting game from Alexkr; Badly Drawn Robots, which can be best described as "Robotron Meets Castle Wolfenstein Meets Dr. Dobbs" and Dobbs Derby, possibly the most ambitious total conversion so far, which turns Dr Dobbs Challenge into a racing game.

We've selected five mods from a rich selection to spotlight here -- four runners-up and the $1,000 winner. If your entry wasn't selected, please don't  think that we've lost, missed or ignored it!

Yes that screenshot is horrid. But it is seriously the best I could do, as Stormbaancoureur is so touchy and so insanely constructed, that even the amount of time it takes for my hand to go from the accelerator to the Print Screen button is enough to throw the car completely off its rails. There is only a single level in this game (plus a tutorial and a free roam area), but it should take the average player at least an hour to successfully navigate.

An interview with Tommy Refenes, founder of the company PillowFort which is based in Hendersonville, North Carolina. One might also recognize his name credited as the developer of Goo!, a finalist for IGF's Technical Excellence award. (download the demo)

Hi Tommy, can you introduce yourself for the benefit of our readers? And do you prefer to be addressed as Tom or Tommy?

I'm Tommy Refenes. Programmer, designer... uhh, everything-er of PillowFort, creator of Goo!. Tommy works (Tom's my dad). I'll stick with Tommy forever until I eventually change my name to a symbol.

I literally spend all my time either programming, or reading up on programming or just thinking about programming. I think I've built an immunity to sitting and staring at the computer. I've been doing it professionally since I was 18, and for fun since I was 11. I worked out of my house for this company and had like 4 servers in the house, 4 monitors looking at different computers, and terminal services all over the place. I sold that house to do games.

I had a great house in Charlotte NC. Had a bad ass sports car, living it up... and one day was like "I wanna do games", then this company offered me a job and I sold it all, put it in storage and moved out to that company. I'd say what company it was, but they were total dicks and I don't want to be associated with them in any way. So they can just be "a game company".

A couple of new sites about indie games to recommend.

Lithium Leaf is perhaps the pick of the three: hardly a single mention of anything else but indie games. The blog is also ordered very neatly, well-written, and updated daily.

Hardcasual is a little less indie-centric, but still has several lengthy articles on the subject of indie games. Helmed by Sam Ryan and Chris Plante (who also writes for a new GameSetWatch column named Why We Play).

Welcome to Special Round is rather similar to Hardcasual - a mix of commercial and indie games, plus everything in-between. Browsing through the archives, one can find reviews of Rom Check Fail, Mighty Jill Off, Flail and even a special feature called "Indie Ethics".

Also not forgetting auntie pixelante and the fantastic Indie Nation.

Voxelstein 3D is a remake based loosely on ID's FPS classic, created by Hans Krieg using Ken Silverman's Voxlap engine. The game consists of only one short level, in which players must find a way out of the mansion they are trapped in using any means necessary. I don't know how many of you remember Shawn Noel. He was a Game Maker developer, probably most well known for his Jetz series of games. He was known for incorporating a good deal of violence and dark humour into his games.

In late 2005, I conducted a short interview with him, which still haunts me to this day (I won't post a link because it has errors from a server change). He seemed to be on a downward spiral. His final project was Street Bike Fury, which was released early in 2006. I felt that this was his best work, underrated and a sign of big things for Shawn. He took his own life not long after this. He was still in highschool. It has been over two years.

Recently clysm of Seiklus fame posted a Shawn64 Retrospective over on the Game Maker Games website. Since clysm knew Shawn better than most, I thought it was a nice read, since it gave some insight into the kid that he was when he was actually happy developing games and brimming with ideas. It's a nice way to remember him.

- [IndieGames.com parent Think Services also helps run Dr. Dobb's Journal, the seminal programming website/magazine - founded in 1975. We're doing the Dobbs Challenge game competition, and the First Month deadline is coming up - hence this FYI.]

GameSetWatch sister site Dr Dobb's Journal has announced that the $1,000 First Month Challenge, an initial prize for the best game produced by modding the Dr. Dobbs Challenge game within a month, is to close April 14th.

The First Month Challenge is the first prize category in the inaugural Dobbs Challenge (a special game competition brought to you in association with Dr. Dobb's Journal and Microsoft) and The Dobbs Challenge organizers have noted that “work-in-progress” games are completely eligible for the First Month Challenge prize.

All entrants are free to continue to developing their project for the final deadline (for all prizes) on June 13th -- including Best Windows Game ($4,000), Best Windows Mobile Game ($2,000), Best One Button Game ($1,000), Best Game Starring Dr Dobbs And The Defy All Challenges Crew ($1,000), and Best Total Conversion ($1,000) - for making something that's completely different in genre/style from the original Dr. Dobbs Challenge, but still keeps 'collect Visual Studio icons' as the mechanic and starts from the same codebase.

To participate, interested parties can firstly download the specially created 'Dr. Dobb's Challenge' games for either Windows and Windows Mobile. Then they can win from a prize pool of $10,000 by modifying the games using a trial version of Visual Studio 2008, in association with competition sponsor Microsoft.

Full source code and art for the games are freely provided for programmers and artists to 'mod' the results and win prizes, and all you need to know to participate is available on the official website.

The Dobbs Challenge organizers have also unveiled their first “Editor’s Choice” mod (the submitted mods that have most impressed the judges so far) with Georg Rottensteiner’s expansion to Dr. Dobbs Challenge, which features a level editor, new art, sound and scrolling levels.

Georg explained his choice to include a level editor as “a needed add-on: while text based levels are nice for casual editing, in the long run an in-game editor is better; you see exactly what you're doing and what's it going to look like. And it lets me create new stages faster!”

He also included tips for people wanting to create graphics in the style of the original game (“I cheated a bit; painted new tiles in twice the resolution and simply scaled them down”) and creating sound effects:

“I've been using DrPetter's sfxr sound tool for additional sound effects. It's an awesome tool that lets you create random 8-bit style sound effects and play with the parameters. Highly recommended.”

Well, I'm 21. I'm half-Persian, half-Finnish/Swede, but I was born and raised here in Sweden. I'm currently studying computer game development, and I love playing indie games. Yeah... I don't really know what else is interesting.

Oh, about my newly gained-internet fame... it's crazy. I'm so in the middle of it all, I'm still not sure how big it is. Some people have called You Have To Burn The Rope (YHTBTR) their game of the year, but I'm still not sure whether it's something that will be forgotten next week.

I'm googling "You Have to Burn the Rope" all the time, checking my referrals on my web statistics and wading through the mail.

Can you explain YHTBTR in your own words?

Well, it is a joke. And I don't want to say too much about it, because dissecting a joke always makes it unfunny. Part of it is this really silly idea, and part of it is this statement about how games are too hard and complicated. It's also a subtle reference to how some games are kind of patronizing toward the player, like too easy.

But I never set out to make it this way, it kind of turned into this with time. It started out as an attempt to make a game that spoiled the whole experience for you before you played it. Funnily enough, people really don't read instructions...

A lot of people that I saw playing the game live actually went through the tunnel without reading the instructions or thinking about the name of the game and realized that you have to burn the rope first when they saw it themselves. I think this is what has happened when I read comments like "it wuz so easy.", these people went right through it and didn't realize that the joke was on them.

Michaël Samyn had recently posted an interview with Jenova Chen on their development journal. In it, they discuss about Jenova's past projects, game design and thatgamecompany's future endeavors. No details about Flower were revealed though. Understandable because they are under a publishing deal, but still - BUMMER.

The words "sister studio" used by Kellee Santiago to describe Tale of Tales is intriguing. The Path on the PSN? D:

In Yume Nikki (Dream Diary), you're cast as a young girl living in a small apartment. There is very little to do in your room, but fall asleep and an entire dream world is yours to explore. The Z key can be used to interact or gain new effects. Certain locations beyond each door may yield more than one effect for the player to discover. Press 9 to wake yourself up. Use the desk in the room to save your progress, and hold the escape key for more than two seconds to exit the NASU console game.

Acquiring the bicycle, lamp and knife should be at the top of your list, as these items will double your character's speed, light up dark areas and allow basic attack moves to be executed. Nearly all locations are wrapped around, hence walking in one direction endlessly will always bring you back to the starting point.

Installation instructions are provided in the zip file. Yume Nikki does have a proper ending. (source: Sekhem, Starmen.Net)

As posted by Random Passersby (thanks!):

This isn't exactly new news, but since I just got back today and found out about it mere minutes ago, let's pretend it is and start praising the great god of indie gaming who somehow was able to restore faith in one of his most trustful servants. For you see, some random chap who goes by the name of ikiki on the interweb put together a nice 'n shiny website intended for showcasing all of his precious work here:

http://ikiki.sokushinbutsu.com/himoji/

It's a whole lot more sophisticated than his old "place where I'll dump all my games" kind of site over at Vector and additionally features several sweet artworks and even handmade gif animations, mostly starring the obligatory naked guy(s). Some of them are equally weird and disturbing, but others would make for excellent avatars I'd say.

Major point of interest though probably the fact that he's gone and finished two new games in the meantime:

-Curry Ki
Put curry in the best possible position in order to create the ultimate curry onigiri. (placement of curries must be a mirror image of their respective rice plates on the left side of the screen)

-Tobioriya
Save the lives of suicidal naked guys jumping off of the top of a building ikiki-style by using bow & arrow to hit them in midair and pin them to the wall. Yes. (The calculation of your final score is based on the number of hits, misses and accuracy percentage. Press the F2 function key to restart at any time.)

FIG (Floating Islands -Game) is a new puzzle game by Arvi Teikari, also known as Hempuli in Nifflas' forums. Described as Lemmings crossed with Hapland, players are given two sets of objectives to achieve in each level. The first one is a prerequisite, that is to collect all yellow stars before arriving at the goal flag. The second task is a tad more difficult, in which players have to find the blue star carefully hidden by the author, revealed only when you've found out the exact method to uncover these rarities.

Interaction is only possible with certain objects on screen, usually indicated when the cursor turns into a pointing hand. Your challenge is to figure out the order in which to click on each object, and clear the path for the protagonist to reach his destination. The basics of gameplay is explained in a short tutorial accessible from the main menu.

FIG has been in production for over half a year now, and is scheduled for a release this summer. The full version will feature thirty-five stages in total. (this demo has five)

Developer: Arvi Teikari
