Art Game Pick: The Naked Game (RetroDev Games)
Billed as a new form of video game art, The Naked Game is basically an interactive piece where two artificial intelligences play out a game of Pong. Visitors to the site can turn off various lines of codes underneath it for a variety of unexpected results, and the author of this work has kindly supplemented his creation with a statement of sorts to explain his odd experiment. The results aren't that "unexpected" if you know anything about programming at all. The code is very straight-forward.

How the fuck is this art?
For that matter, how the fuck are any art games art? Because some pretentious prick calls it art that's instatnly what it is?
Alright, I consider Rapelay, a game where you rape 3 Japanese Women, art. It, you know, explores the inner mind or something. Figure it out for yourself, its art, right?
What games do I actually consider art? Not any of these. I consider Knytt art. I consider Aquaria art. I don't consider some poorly coded slapped together piece of shit with programmer graphics "art".

@PoisonedV
lol. Knytt is very good. Aquaria I still haven't gotten yet.

I see how it works. You have to imagine someone with no programming knowledge looking at this game. It's the jump from player to programmer.
When a game is great, we don't even notice all of the programming work that probably went into it--the gameplay is fluid. But that doesn't mean it isn't there.
So this is a chance to see that interaction on the pong level. Like what would happen to a zygote if we took gametes and messed them up during meiosis.

Practically every piece of art as seen in museums can be called pretentious. Modern art paintings, for the majority of people, are nothing but a mishmash of lines and colors and shapes with no purpose or reason behind them. The artist will go ahead and tell you that's an inner view of his own tortured soul. You can call the artist pretentious, and he probably is, but his painting will still be considered an 'official' form of art. and who knows, he might be telling you the truth. He might be expressing himself in a way that's so personal that it's incomprehensible to everyone else around him. Or he could have slapped a paint-dirty dildo over the whole canvas and made shit up. You can't know for sure.
Art doesn't have to be pretty. The fact that you loathe this enough to comment about it probably does more good to it than bad. What most artists dread more than being flamed is not being noticed at all. Some artists enjoy when people tell them both why they think their art is a true form of expression or a waste of time and resources.
I totally expect that many of the coders making 'art games' are trying to get into a recent bandwagon in order to grab some attention to themselves. I also expect some to have a true intention of trying to show people how this medium can be used for deep expression.

I think Custers Revenge was the first true art game.
If you don't 'get' it, you obviously are a dense, far-right hypocrite with no taste for modern art! Viva la revolution!

It's art.
Anything anyone decides to call art is art.
People used to claim Photographs were not art as they were merely representing whatever the camera was pointed at. But, a human chose to take the photograph, compose the picture etc and choose to display it and call it art, therefore it is.
There are many opinions on what is art and what isn't, but in general, whatever you choose to call art and by the fact you are calling it art and attracting other peoples attention to it, makes it art.
Sounds pretentious huh? Well it is, I had to do Art theory as part of my Degree, and it gets Very pretentious.
Most people attach the term art to things they like.
This game is art, but this game isn't.
That's not correct. They are all art, but that doesn't make it good art.
Some would argue that beauty is a better term to use for what people commonly use art for.
e.g. I think this game is great, it is beautifully designed etc.
I think conceptual art is a lot like 'the emperor's new clothes'.
Somone gets a feel good buzz from the clever idea.
They show it to other people and explain how awesome and clever the idea is, and imply that you must be thick if you cannot understand the depth of their intellect and the concept.
These people don't like to feel as if they don't get it, because that'd make them feel stupid, so they claim to get it, and will often just create their own critiques of the work, creating and building up new concepts and ideas which the art piece is supposed to be exploring, and they will also pass on the, can't you see it? don't you understand? are you stupid?
So I say, yes it is art. yes it is conceptual, but is it good?
Not in my opinion.
But, a by product of it has been that it's caused a few people to think about it, so maybe it's not that bad after all. :)

Is this a gaming blog or high school philosophy class? Jesus christ.

@PoisonedV: It's more like a high school philosphy class, but more pretentious.
