The Power is a freeware 2D platformer in the style of Lyle in Cube Sector, Alex Adventure and Plasma Warrior. Your character begins with limited health and no special abilities, but will quickly gain suit and weapon upgrades over the course of his adventure. Use the cursor keys to move, and tap the C key to shoot.

The game includes five different areas to explore, multiple boss encounters and two endings to discover.

It's alright, but it's quite obvious the author can't program, which really hampers the game. The platform engine feels really hacked together: fixed jumping height, glitchy landings, hardcoded screen entrance positions, you lose momentum when changing rooms, etc. It feels like the base platformer tutorial for GameMaker plus a few half-implemented features.

I think with some work it could be pretty cool.. love the art direction, just the engine itself needs a lot of tweaking. I think this is a first try anyways, so the amateurish touches aren't surprising and its a pretty decent effort.

I haven't beaten it yet, but it's pretty cool. Like Zmann had said, I wish there wasn't a fixed jumping height, but I chalked every "annoyance" from the game engine as how the author wanted the game made vs inexperience.

Well, except for randomly stopping when entering a new room (which was mentioned as a bug by the author himself). I never had a glitchy landing and I'm not sure what Zmann meant about hardcoded entrance positions... unless he's talking about jumping from an area below to a screen above... but, I thought the author did that to just remove the annoyances of trying to find out where to jump from the screen below and where to land when the screen suddenly changes.

Baaaaaaaaaad game.

You know, Noitu Love 2 has fixed jump height...

It's definitely inexperience. I've made some of the same mistakes before!

Also, The Shins is the optimal band to listen to while playing this game.

It's a nice game imo. It just has some of the classic gm platformer issues. I love the art.

MAN some of these bosses are tough. I can't beat the ice mountain boss the second time I fight him.

Wow, all of you are pretty damn picky. I suppose I'm used to the gamemaker platformer quirks. Plus, the classic retort: could you do better?

I finished it in a few hours, and I liked it. The only real problem is that if you use the grappling hook and bump into a ledge on the way up different from the the one you hit with the hook, you're stuck forever, unless you get hit by an enemy. But once you realize this you can be careful with the hook and play it with no problem.

I was actually defending it with what I said. I think it shows a lot of promise and is pretty good for a first attempt. It could be a lot more awesome with some work though.

Hi everyone!I am the creator of this game and just found out about this site.
I have to agree with most of the comments, this game is simplistic and minimalistic in every way, and no , i don't know a thing about programming.
I also kept everything simple because this is my first try at a game like this and i wanted to avoid frustration at all cost and wanted to make sure that i will be able to complete it.
The reported bug involving the hook has been solved. The character still stops randomly after transitioning,i couldn't get it fixed.Except for the ones going up and down, there shouldn't be anymore hardcoded entrance positions,i got rid of a few that were left in the forest area. The newest version is up at 64Digits.You can also download it here:

Thanks to everyone for your feedback.I hope that you can forgive my inexperience and still have a good time with my game.

As a first game, it's still impressive. It's way better than most games I've played this year. I thought the controls were pretty good, and other than the room entry momentum glitch and the hook glitch I got hit with once, this is a very solid game. It's detailed, it's got hours of play time, it's challenging, and you handle saving and loading very well. The boss checkpoints are an excellent feature.

I felt the rapid shot wasn't used so much, but the new features and abilities introduced by each item that gradually increased the area of the world you could visit was handled quite well.

I look forward to seeing more games from this author. Maybe with some chiptune style music and additional testing we could see some very epic Metroidvania style platformers.

I quite enjoyed this. The graphics were great and I overall enjoyed the game's feeling.

I really liked thig game and I'm hooked.

It's a tough game to finish with challenging bosses. Yeah, so what, it has some bugs but at least, it's playable and fun.

Thanks again to everyone for the great feedback.I'm happy to see that so many people are having a good time with my game.
cactus:I most say that is an honor to have you playing and commenting on my game.I am an admirer of your work, not only because is great, but also because is inspirational.I'm glad that you enjoyed this game so much.

Metroid-like games really need a map.

I HAVE THE POWER!!

Sorry, I just could NOT resist making that joke.

Dude this game kicks ass but i cant get past this one boss battle, the one in the water where you float around.

I think the bubble fight is a tad unbalanced. No matter how many times I try it (with full health and missiles, and I've collected everything) I can't do it. It may not even be possible.

for the bubble battle you just need to survive
