[*NEW*: The Independent Games Festival is back for its historic 11th year, with almost $50,000 in prizes, plus new categories and notable judges - enter today!]

« Freeware Game Pick: NES Quest (KCD Games) | Main | Indie App Pick: OE-CAKE! (Prometech Software, Inc.) »

Welcome to the new IndieGames.com Game of the Month pick! Every month, we will highlight a special pay-to-download indie game worthy of your attention. Selections are based on the quality of each game and the fun factor they offer.

More importantly, these games are the ones that stand out in the crowded space of commercial indie releases - the crème de la crème, so to speak.

Our inaugural pick is Data Realms' title Cortex Command - the indie team-based PC combat game with neat pixel graphics and physics used to simulate every character, particle, and explosion in extreme detail.

Although still a work in progress, Cortex Command features two main gameplay modes and support for up to four players in splitscreen mode. It is sure not to disappoint fans of action-packed battles in the style of Soldat and Worms! Click through for more info on key game features.

[NOTE: If you buy Cortex Command from the IndieGames.com Game Of The Month page, you are supporting both its developer Data Realms, and also supporting IndieGames.com, allowing us to continue bringing you the latest news on independent games. This is at no higher price to you!]

It's a great game, going to be really incredible one day. It's still in it's very early stages though. I was playing it a few weeks ago and there was no campaign mode yet, aside from the first mission.

This game is absolutely fantastic. Play it now.

Amazing game, with a great community. If you get bored of the default weaponary, there are loads of mods at the community site.

Data and Prom are gods.

This ought to be game of the year, and maybe it will be when it's released. It's definitely worth your money, and will only get better with time.

I'm a rather active modder for that game. The modding community is already rather robust. Once the game is released I'm sure it will be enjoyed for both its clever base content and a slew of already active mods.

This game is really great. I'd suggest it to anyone, since you can play it in so many different ways. Plus, the mods for this game are really cool, too. You should check those out. I made some.

I love Cortex Command. The totally reckless skirmishes are something you just have to experience!

Meh. If it was single-player - it would be a good game. But noooo, today everyone and his stupid granma must only build multiplayer and MOO like mad.

Karry, what do you mean? Skrimish is one of the major parts of the game, being singleplayer.

I like this new game of the month feature, keep doing it!

I like this game, but I hope this "Feature" doesn't turn into YOU SCRATCH OUR BACK, WELL SCRATCH YOURS

Karry, there is a full single player campaign in the works. However, you will also be able to play the campaign missions cooperatively with friends if you want!

I really like what it is trying to do, however the physics and controls are quite wonky currently, and I found it difficult to control and play effectivly. The graphics are wonderfull and the depth of the effects and amount of gibs are fun to watch, however clambering over stuff, and getting stuck, too often,. is rather frustrating,. if the fun and depth can be balanced if will indeed be a force to be reconed with!

"I like this game, but I hope this "Feature" doesn't turn into YOU SCRATCH OUR BACK, WELL SCRATCH YOURS"

In my experience Tim's integrity is pretty solid, so I doubt he'd do anything like that. I suspect he'll just choose what he thinks the best game of the month is, regardless of any other factors.

Thinking back on it now, I remember playing this game when it was still a prototype, or a beta or something.
regardless, the demo is amazing and i am probably going to buy it
