Review by D. Fai

Sauerbraten is an open source FPS which focuses less on eye candy and more on fast-paced old school-style gameplay. A "CTF Edition" of Sauerbraten was recently released, with the new CTF gametype added to the multiplayer lineup, loads of engine updates, performance improvements, updated GUI, level editor enhancements, and bug fixes. A bunch of new maps are included as well, while existing gametypes have received a number of improvements. (changelist)

Name: Sauerbraten
Developer: Wouter (original code)
Category: FPS
Type: Freeware
Size: 290MB
Platform: Windows, Mac, Linux

It's not based on Cube 2. It is Cube 2.

It's mainly an engine showcase with a template game included in the form of a FPS.

Its main aim is not the fast paced gameplay, but rather "to allow map/geometry editing to be done dynamically in-game, to create fun gameplay and an elegant engine."

It's all there on the front page really.

The editing comment is spot on: I've spent some time experimenting with the built-in map editor, and I've never really seen anything like it in an FPS game. Very intriguing.
