We've done GameTap today, so it's only fair to balance it out by mentioning the release of Eternity's Child on Steam. The game can be purchased for less than USD $5. (trailer, in the press, soundtrack, Wikipedia entry)

We just got a note from Aleks Krotoski over at the British newspaper The Guardian's notable Gamesblog, and sounds like she's looking for more indies to talk about - here's the info:

"The Guardian's gamesblog knows there's more to games than the mainstream players. Over our four-year history, we've endeavored to cover the indie scene as best we can, and we're even dabbling in our own indie game development project.

But enough about us. We run a semi-weekly feature called 'Game Pitch' in which we ask indie game developers ten pre-set questions about their projects as an opportunity to 'Pitch' the game to The Guardian readership. Here are a couple of examples: Clouds Beyond Clouds, a point-and-click mystery based on the lives and works of the Bronte sisters and the ARG The Sky Remains.

Here's the seed that kicked it all off.

If you've got a game you're working on and would like to see it on The Guardian, please do get in touch. You can contact me at gamesblog (at) gmail.com. Really looking forward to hearing from you! - Aleks."

- Passage and Gravitation creator Jason Rohrer is, unquestionably, a great game designer and a great game theorist--though there are as many things I agree with him on as their are things I disagree with.

Here is a small taste of a big interview I recently had with the game designer, writer, and thrifty nature conservist (if he weren't so down to earth, he might be considered an eccentric). The rest of the interview can be found over at The Happy Medium, and be sure to check out his many projects at his personal site.

You mentioned you hadn’t played Shadow of the Colossus. Have you had a chance to yet?

I haven’t had time to play it more than a few hours, but my initial reaction, at least to the beginning, was, “Wow, that was a really long and uninteresting cut scene.”
I think part of that was like uh, last generation graphics are no longer interesting to watch in and of themselves like they were when it was released. it shows the guy riding a horse through some trees, past a river, some rocks, and whatever. It was not something that was impressive to me, not deep and profound like it was supposed to be. But besides that, why is it so long? Why is he riding the horse across the long bridge and not me?

From what I’ve heard about Shadow of the Colossus, people respect it as a work of art because it has this ethical dilemma of some kind. Like you’re killing these giants to bring this girl back to life. I went through one giant encounter and it was one of the most brutal things I’ve ever done in a video game—seeking it out, climbing up, climbing up, stabbing this thing in the head multiple times until if fell down. I felt strange about that, but so far I don’t see how this game puts an ethical dilemma in front of me. You either kill these things or you don’t do anything.

I think the reason people consider Shadow of the Colossus art is because, like you write about, it delivers its message through gameplay. Like you said, you feel like you’re doing something brutal when you kill the giants, unlike other games where the violence seems senseless.

Well yeah, but that’s the thing though, when you look at how the game is marketed, the box says “you get to go up against 16 huge giants,” exclamation mark! You know? the way it’s presented to you, there is nothing about it to indicate that this is even a weird thing to do to beat the game.

[Fumito Ueda] as an artist, is he trying to make a statement about video game violence or is he just making a game with really cool boss battles? I feel like I’m a little bit disappointed by it and I don’t know what people are reading into it. I feel like he didn’t really do it on purpose.

gibbage_knackered.jpg

About this time last year, I had a great idea to sell games as an affiliate through Gibbage.co.uk, but hand over all the cash I earned to struggling developers so they could up the ante and deliver some truly astonishing Indie games.

It didn't really work, for various reasons. The usual reasons. I didn't really have the time to dedicate to the project, and as such stopped updating the site with new games, and the whole thing sort of caved in on itself.

Still, we did make a couple of quid, and there were some very kind donations by people who understood and believed in what I was trying to do.

That said, there's not much cash to be had. I've topped it up to nice round £200 ($400ish) - which is enough to buy someone some decent music for their game, or some tasty art to add a bit of spit and polish.

It'll only go to someone who's working on a proper, inspiring example of true Indie ingenuity. If you'd like to get your hands on some genuinely free money, drop me a line to dan@zombie-cow.com with as many details as possible of your project- screenshots are a bonus -and let me know what the cash would be used for.

If you know of someone who's working on something brillo-wow, and would like to nominate them, leave a comment or drop me and email or a pm or something.

We'll go from there. Sorry it didn't work out better, but you live and learn, I guess.

Small Print:
For the sake of keeping my nose clean, it won't go to anyone I've had any serious dealings with in the past couple of years, in case it just looks all a bit dodgy. That said, it needs to go to something and someone deserving, no matter what. I'll probably set up some sort of voting in the Zombie Cow Forums to decide where the cash goes, but my decision is final. Payment will be via PayPal, so you'll need an account. If there's not enough interest in FREE MONEY, it'll go to a worthy charity like helping little children to not be poorly, that sort of thing.

Thanks to everyone who bought a game through Gibbage.co.uk, it's very much appreciated.

-The organizers of the Independent Games Festival have announced the nine winners of the Austin GDC IGF Showcase, picking the very best examples of 'local flavor' in terms of indie games from Austin and the Southern U.S. to be exhibited at the Austin Game Developers Conference from September 15th to 17th.

Austin Wintory has been a busy man. Our first interview with the composer was over a year ago, and since then he has worked on a number of games and media projects ranging from foreign films to indie MMO titles and more. We're most familiar with his music from flOw, both the free Flash demo and the full-featured PlayStation 3 downloadable game. But did you know he also did the score for Captain Abu Raed, the first true feature film to come from Jordan? Not to mention the awards he's both won and been nominated for. We finally managed to catch up with Austin and get his side of the story on all things musical.

The studio that produced flOw, thatgamecompany, has two titles in the works, one of which is flower. Are you involved with either of those?

TGC's second title "Flower" is being scored by a colleague of mine, with whom Jenova had worked on his popular title before 'flOw,' called 'Cloud.' As of now I have no involvement with the game except that I've played it and all I can say is that it's FANTASTIC! But I have unending respect for, and a great friendship with Kellee, Jenova, the rest of ThatGameCompany and all the guys they work with at Sony Santa Monica. It's a truly wonderful team. Their careers are only going to get bigger and better, so I certainly hope we collaborate again! ;-)

From GamerBytes: Metanet have announced that the first of 3 expansion packs for their hit game 'N+' will be coming out this week.

Levelpack #1 features 150 new singleplayer maps of "easier" difficulty -- including a map in which we publicly apologize for 14-4 "Master Control" -- which are designed for those people who like the game but prefer the slightly more laid-back levels you tend to find at the start of each episode/column. Things still get fairly hard by the end though. So not easy, but easier.
There are also 50 new co-op maps, which are (we think) much improved over the co-op levels that came with the game, mostly due to us having months more time to play co-op and figure out what works. These are quite definitely NOT easy -- make sure to sit out of punching range, especially when playing 08-4 "the friendship tester". You've been warned!

The first and second packs will cost 200 Points each. The third will be free.

Metanet are also holding a competition - guess the 8 level names NOT used in the upcoming pack to stand a chance in winning a copy of the game, a notebook pack and a copy of the OXM Magazine with new exclusive gamer pics.

Inquisitive Dave is a modern take on the Dizzy series, where players will embark on an important quest to save the world by using odd treasures or trinkets they've scavenged when revealing new areas and inch their way closer to the final boss battle.

The game is extremely linear to a fault, with only one action button assigned for all interaction and dialogue forwarding purposes. There is also a lot of backtracking to be done, though the adventure itself is rather short and shouldn't take more than half an hour to complete. Inquisitive Dave only gets a tad more interesting towards the end, but the payoff may not be nearly enough to justify the dull bits which players would have to endure before the story gets going. In Pandemic 2, players are given the chance to exercise god-like powers in deciding how to mutate a certain disease while trying to annihilate mankind in the process. This is achieved by spending evolution points on disease symptoms, resistance or transmission methods to increase the chance and rate of infection.

The game isn't without a couple of setbacks. There is a heavy reliance on a single strategy, making the disease difficult to spot while trying to spread it to as many countries as you possibly can. Once government officials had begun taking preventive measures to stop the virus from reaching their shores, chances are that Madagascar will end up as one of the few countries to be free of the disease due to their lack of contact with the outside world. Loot is a casual card game set in a dungeon, in which players are to equip themselves with a deck consisting of potions or spells procured from the rooms they've explored.

You may only move into an adjacent room one at a time, with each new location yielding either a trap, loot or ladder. You lose one of your health points when encountering traps, and can carry a maximum of six cards at most. Players will be forced to discard or use a card immediately if the deck limit is reached.

There are an infinite number of levels to explore, but players must still make their way back to the entrance of the dungeon to win the game and have their points haul recorded on the high score table. Brilliantly executed, but unfortunately the game also relies heavily on the use of a pen and paper for noting down locations of traps.

Whodunnit -- Think Quickly is a crime fiction puzzle game where you play a veteran detective faced with the urgent task of finding the perpetrator who poisoned the teapot, from which all dinner guests for the evening had just drank from.

Your objective is to prove all but one of the guests innocent of any wrongdoings, which can achieved by finding either an alibi, lack of motivation or incapability to handle poison. When making your accusation, you'll be asked to explain why each and every one of the other guests are to be presumed innocent.

The stress level will rise slowly during the course of your investigation, but you can stay focused on the matter at hand by relaxing or lighting up a cigarette. Use the F1 function key to view some hints for the game. You will also need a pen and paper to take notes.

Whodunnit... Think Quickly does have a few glaring flaws. Solving cases at the highest difficulty level requires the player to ask too many questions within the time limit, while simpler investigations can be solved just by thinking about all suspects in the room.

Derelict is a creepy first-person shooter featuring dark bloodstained corridors, a small team of brave marines and hordes of spawning mutants. Space Hulk fans will sure find this setting familiar. The game plays like a tactical puzzle - soldiers can't outrun enemies and have limited ammo, so walikng aimlessly or standing on a spot nailing down endless waves of bad guys is a sure way to die.

Luckily, each of the five troopers under player's command has an overhead map which not only shows level layout but can also be used to give orders to teammates. Unfortunately, only the CO can see enemies on the map as well. The other four soldiers are a heavy gunner, a demolitions expert, a hacker and a medic - each with their own useful skills.

The game atmosphere is superb - mostly because of the haunting soundtrack, low light levels and Alien-style beeping of motion detector.

What follows is our informal chat with Erin Robinson, a respected indie game developer in the AGS scene held in high regards by industry veterans Dave Gilbert and Heather Kelley. Her fresh portfolio already includes involvement in the creation of a successful commercial game and the releases of two full-length freeware adventure games.

Hi Erin, shall we begin with a little introduction?

Okay, let's see... I'm a 21-year-old indie game developer who has developed two original freeware games (Spooks and Nanobots). Additionally, I did the background art and sprite animation for Wadjet Eye Games' Blackwell: Unbound.

Are you a student as well? Or do you have a full-time job while moonlighting as a game developer for kicks?

I graduated from university a month ago, actually. I just got a degree in psychology and I'm currently working in neuroscience. I have a full-time job now, but this game development thing continues to be a favourite hobby. It's kind of funny, really... most of my coworkers and family don't know about my alter ego.

How did you came to join the Notes on Game Dev's Aspiring Women Game Artists competition (which you eventually won)?

Dave Gilbert actually tipped me off to the contest months ago, and I saved a link on my desktop but had nearly forgotten about it. Then about a week before the deadline I stumbled upon the contest website and thought, "Hmm, I could probably write 500 words about my dream."

A while back Tim gave me the rights to write here about my games. I haven't really been happy with the stuff I've made in last couple of months, so I didn't really want to blog about them. But Jimmy's Lost His Toilet Paper was a fun game to work with and the initial response has been good, so I thought why not.

Think Services, organizer of the Game Developers Conference (GDC), is pleased to announce that submissions are now open for the 2009 Independent Games Festival (IGF). Submissions to the 11th annual festival are due by November 2008, with finalists to be announced January 5th.

Games selected as finalists will available in playable form on the GDC show floor and will compete for nearly $50,000 in prizes, including awards for Innovation, Excellence in Design, and the coveted $20,000 Seumas McNally Grand Prize.

Winners will be announced on stage at the prestigious Independent Games Festival Awards on Wednesday, March 25, 2009, at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. The Independent Games Festival Awards are held along the Game Developers Choice Awards and both award shows are part of the 2009 Game Developers Conference.

Over the past few years, the Independent Games Festival has helped guide the rise of the indie game scene by honoring and popularizing the best and brightest independent developers and their games. Former IGF winners include Everyday Shooter, Audiosurf, and World of Goo.

Notable evolutions to this year’s festival include:

- A number of new IGF judges, including Spore designer Chaim Gingold, World Of Goo co-creator Kyle Gabler, The Sims Studio head Rod Humble, Civilization IV co-creator Soren Johnson, Rock Paper Shotgun co-founder Jim Rossignol, and Crayon Physics author Petri Purho.

- Returning IGF judges include independent game creators Jon Blow (Braid), Raigan Burns (N+), and Derek Yu (Aquaria), game industry veterans Brian Reynolds (Big Huge Games), Chris Rausch (SuperVillain Studios), and Chris Charla (Foundation9), and journalists N’Gai Croal (Newsweek), Chris Kohler (Wired News), and Stephen Totilo (MTV News). The full list of judges will be announced in the near future.

- In addition to the $20,000 Seumas McNally Grand Prize and the awards for audio, art direction, design and technology, the IGF is presenting a new Innovation Award in the Main Competition. This new award is intended to honor abstract, shortform, and unconventional game development, allowing more esoteric ‘art games’ to compete on their own terms alongside longer-form indie titles.

“We’re delighted to welcome a new cadre of judges, alongside categories that encourage even greater experimentalism and innovation, to our industry-leading indie game competition”, said Simon Carless, Chairman of the IGF. “We’re very much looking forward to see what you crazy independent developers come up with this time round.”

Submissions to the competition are now open to all independent game developers; important dates for IGF 2009 are as follows:

July 1st, 2008 - Submissions are Open
November 1st, 2008 - Submission Deadline, Main Competition
November 15th, 2008 - Submission Deadline, Student Competition
January 5th, 2009 - Finalists Announced, Main Competition
