This is unconfirmed, but apparently download links for all Cave Story ports were withdrawn recently at the request of the original developer Pixel. A poster on Amigaworld.net let slip that the game will be released as a commercial WiiWare title on Nintendo's console sometime in the near future. (mockup cover art: Niklas Jansson)

CaveStory is no more freeware? or only the amiga version/wii version? Didn't understand much.. lol

Firesword, long story short, some people were doing these cave story ports for other systems and Pixel (cave story creator) denied them permission to create the ports, this often happens if the game has intentions of going commercial.

So Pixel gets to make some money for making one of the best platformers I've ever played on PC, and I'll get to play CaveStory on my bigscreen with a classic controller WHILE supporting Pixel? Tell me where to sign.

I just sent Pixel an e-mail to clarify the status of the other ports (and original). I'll let everyone know what I get back.

I already play Cave Story on big screen with a 'classic controller'. TV Out from the PC and a PS2 style joypad suits me fine.

This seems a bit late to be making money, and I'm certainly not buying a Wii for this.

WiiWare?

Cave Story is awesome!!

@PF
You can have all that on PC too. Buy a decent pad and connect your PC to your TV.
Where's the problem?

So basically greedy Nintendo forced Pixel to terminate the freeware status so they can make more money of it? Nice move, no support from me.
Torrents will fix the situation...

I seriously doubt Nintendo "forced" anything. Considering there are various games on Wii/DS that originated as free to play computer games.

Which Wiiware games are you talking about?
There's a difference between games like Blastworks that originated as freeware in a much simpler form (Tumiki Fighters) and freewaregames that suddenly turn commercial.

This would be great news if true. I'd totally play/buy Cave Story on the Wii, and I'd be very happy to know that Pixel is finally getting some monetary compensation for the game.

Also, nice choice on Arne's EA Cave Story box art, tim :)

OK, so let's clear this up.

Tim who posted the notice: Is Cave Story still a free download? Was it only the ports of the game taken down?

There seems to be some confusion in the comments.

Turns out it was just a misunderstanding. Can't say I'm surprised though.

Actually already use a decent pad, and could go through the trouble of doing a TV connection if I really wanted to. Just liked the idea of supporting Pixel AND doing those things, so sue me.

All in all it appears to be a non-issue.

I think Pixel wants no future ports for it, but at least the computer version will stay available. If it goes on WiiWare I hope it's a remake and not LOL SAME GAME BUT SINCE IT LOOKS RETRO LIEK MEGAMAN 9 YOU'LL BUY IT RITE

I might download it if we get some new material. If its the same game then...Why bother paying $10 bucks for what I already own?

As I understand it this news was false, yeah. A pity, though. I really want to give Pixel some money for what has been, without a doubt, the most cherished indie game.

I would have loved Cave Story on WiiWare.

This makes me sad now. :(

I've still got it on my GP2X. :D

My buddy badassbill is doing the revamp for the bosses so they match HD requirments.
