Game Development: Construct, musagi, protoshop
DrPetter (creator of sfxr) had recently updated his music editing tool musagi with a number of new features and bug fixes. An OpenGL paint application called protoshop was also released to the public, which should be receiving regular updates in the coming weeks.
Developers looking for a freeware game development tool might want to take a look at Construct. There are a few examples to download which demonstrates the engine's basic features in action, and a showcase section in the forums where members would regularly post their creations to.
Construct still has some ways to go before achieving the popularity or versatility of Game Maker and MMF (lack of comprehensive tutorials isn't helping), but what's already available so far does show promise.

Protoshop is pretty impressive so far! I'm really liking the colour blending and how vibrant it makes things look. Hopefully he'll continue working on this so it's more user friendly :)

I'm somewhat excited about Construct, but it crashed as a result of my first attempt to insert a sprite in a layout (following the tutorial). :(
Judging from the tutorial then, this game maker may have some very handy advantages over GM7, e.g. a button that adds 8 direction movement to a sprite in a single click, plus acceleration and deceleration.
Standing by for updates/upgrades.

A spectacular piece you've got there, Kaizen. Does a good job of pointing out how I need a scrollbar in the layer stack ;)
BenH: Continue working I will, and user-friendliness is a high priority. It's just that I'm primarily adding features for now, and improved accessibility will only come after repeated iterations of user feedback and adjustments.
I will put up a dedicated forum section at some point, when I run out of obvious things to improve.
