This is a demo. And it sucks. The point of demo is to show the full game, not to make a game that is (hopefully) unrelated to the game it tries to sell

Yeah, I liked the trailer I saw but this demo isn't too great.

The hit detection is crap and after awhile it gets really boring.

The Toadtrip Studio site (linked in the post) has a non-Flash demo of the game.
If you dislike the Flash game but like the premise and core gameplay, you should try it.

Boring after just 1 minute.
I hope the complete version is a bit different.
Good graphics but too much repetitive.

I was looking forward to this, but it kind of seems like a missed opertunity... It's gorgeous and in a way it's really quite imaginative, but there doesn't seem to be much more to the actual gameplay than walking back and forth and shooting things with differing weapons... Even something simple like temporary powerups or enemies that do different things could make this 100 times better right away :(
I haven't tried the downloadable demo yet though, so maybe there's more to that.

To be fair, I just went and tried the downloadable version. It's a bit better (there's more dodging space, the hit detection is better). The controls still felt a little slipper and the soundbytes got a bit repetitive. I still wouldn't pay $20, even $10. Sorry.

full version is not bad, pretty decent actually.
Posted by: Anonymous | November 3, 2008 12:28 AM
Hey retards. How about you actually do a little thinking for yourselves before opening your yappers and actually click on the link to the full version? Seriously, some of you are just stupid beyond belief.
Also, flash and full version games target two different and separate markets, with totally different audiences.
Posted by: RetardSmasher | November 3, 2008 12:43 AM
OK RetardSmasher, the full version is $20. And the Flash game, the easily accessible online game designed to market the game (notice the billboards linking you to their site selling more levels) is crap.
If you are talking about the demo, say so. I'm sure scrolling right through "huge levels" is more fun than the flash game (/sarcasm).
The flash game is a never ending loop of levels. Once you get the bolt action rifle it is game over.
10 Shoot right
20 Reload
30 Shoot left
40 Return to 10
And then you wait to get the rocket launcher. Getting through a level took less than 30 seconds and barely moves the xp bar.

I like how you put absolutely no emphasis on the styling of the game whatsoever. Compared to other flash titles, it is far and away superior. It's a shooter man, most shooters have you travelling left to right shooting things. If you don't "get it" just say so, no one will hate you for it.
Otherwise, jealousy is a curse. ;)
Posted by: RetardSmasher | November 3, 2008 10:20 AM
RetardSmasher: I hope you're not one of the developers of this. If people don't like your game, there's probably a reason for that. Calling them retards isn't really on. "You're just jealous" is completely infantile too.
Personally I had fun with this, was annoyed by losing health when attacked by zombies who i felt were behind me or further in the foreground than me. I wanted to go around them, but the game didn't seem to want to let me. The weapons were fun. The sound bites were fun, if a little too commonly played and a bit too sweary.

Just found this post b4, thanks for the add on the blog. Retard smasher im not sure who you are but im pretty sure i can defend my own game k thx bye.
Sorry you guys don't like the flash version, its my first flash game ill try harder next time if I decide to make other game, sorta demotivated after reading your comments guys.

Hey Farmergnome,
Thanks for commenting. Don't be discouraged. It's your first effort and this is a learning experience. Graphically your game is excellent. The sounds are also very good. The thing is you need to give the player some variety in the gameplay.
A simple improvement would be a smaller hit box, but more aggressive or faster zombies for more frantic action. A melee attack (which would interrupt reloading) could be another improvement.
What seemed most strange to me was how the zombies never got more powerful. I expected to be punished for not picking up new weapons, but I wasn't. The same zombies just kept coming. Adding variety to the enemies would be good. A simple colour change to some of the zombies could denote more dangerous ones. Stronger, faster, explosive? Perhaps bloated zombies that would take lots and lots of shots to kill.
All these are fairly small and simple but would improve player imput from shooting left and then right endlessly.
Again, don't be discouraged. Part of improving in any field is taking criticism. Unfortunately criticism can sometimes feel pretty harsh, especially from the anonymity of the internet. I'm sure you learned a lot making the game, and will learn a lot from the feedback you receive here and elsewhere.

Don't forget, the flash version isn't as good as the downloadable version. A lot of my complaints were fixed with it.
Posted by: Chetyre | November 3, 2008 3:45 PM
Maybe a better disclaimer that informs that the Flash version is not entirely indicative of the full version is needed, to clear up any future misconceptions about the game.
Posted by: crackers | November 4, 2008 12:02 AM
Yeah, the graphics are really good and I like the increasingly zombified Health Bar portrait. But the gameplay is just dull.
Plus if you're going to have the in-game avatar talking, give him some pithy action movie one-liners. I can spew random obscenities at the imaginary monsters in my monitor just fine by myself.

Thanks for the feedback.
crackers-"Maybe a better disclaimer that informs that the Flash version is not entirely indicative of the full version is needed, to clear up any future misconceptions about the game."
Heh, thats for end users to figure out man, I think I made it pretty simple linking it up n all, if they cant figure that out then I don't think there's much more I can offer people who blast comments first and then throw it all on me like I owe them something. I really hope some people do check out the TGB version. Im not sure I realy want to continue this conversation anyhow, Im feeling dead burnt out on the topic, working on the application version for some months only to hear this really has turned me sour on gamedev in general.
Cyas around.

@ Farmergnome : No, it's not for the users to "find out" that the full retail game is not the same.
Do you know how many demo your "target demographic" plays every weeks/months? People that follow indiegame.com and tigsource (to name only two) get to play demos like that nearly every day.
Believe me, if the demo is bad, no one will bother to click the Full Version link. Maybe you think that it's a test to weed out buyers or something, but don't complain if we dont pass your test...
If you check the comments on TIGsource, which are way more favorable, you'll see that the original post doesn't give a link to the flash version. The problem is not the game, it's your flash demo. Your exe demo is not half bad (I wish that you would allow for pixel resize, not that eagle2x interpolation crap)
Posted by: Gutter | November 4, 2008 12:41 PM
If I could do pixel art half as good as you theres no way I'd ever "give up" making games.
Posted by: Uhh... | November 4, 2008 4:00 PM
Woah, nice style! Reminds me a lot of Metal Slug, which is one of the best sprite games out there.
Don't be discouraged by the Internet comments, best thing to do is filter out the useless comments and take the constructive criticisms as tips for your next project(s).
What makes me sad is that people would berate your hard work, based on ignorance and envy, (yes, if you only played the demo, you ARE ignorant to what the full game has). I thought the indie community was more respectful than that.
What you have here is a lot more than what others have done, so keep on truckin', you've got a good thing going.

Full version has 2 more weapons and 3 more backgrounds. Liars.
