Spade Witch is a short vertical shooter consisting of one playable stage, created for the annual Hot Soup Processor Contest. Use the cursor keys to move, and press the Z key to shoot. The left shift key can be used to make your character move slower while focusing her shots as well. Note that the focused shot has to be used frequently in order to defeat bosses quicker.

The game can be played in either full screen or windowed mode.

So until I learn Japanese, can anyone tell me what this "Hot Soup Processor" contest is about?

I think that Hot Soup Processor is the name of a game engine that's freeware. This contest is one where someone gets a prize/mention for making the best game using it.

For some reason this shot looks a LOT like Actraiser's city building modes to me.
