Freeware Game Pick: Spelunky (Derek Yu)
Update: version 0.98.1 released.
Spelunky is the new procedurally-generated 2D platformer from Derek Yu, developer of several memorable freeware games and co-creator of the award-winning Aquaria. In it, players assume the role of a treasure hunter who ventures into the Colossal Cave in search of gold coins, gems, golden idols and damsels to rescue.
Areas are randomly generated whenever you start a new game, and the money you've acquired can be used to trade for items in shops. To proceed to the next level, simply search for an exit which is usually placed somewhere at the bottom of every map. You can carry dames towards the exit for an extra health bonus, while golden idols award more money than coins and gems although you would have to watch out for the boulder trap that awaits thieving archaelogists. By lending money to the tunnel man, shortcuts to levels five and nine can be built for quick access from the start menu. (Let's Play Spelunky)

"You can carry dames towards the exit for an extra health bonus"
Sounds like my kind of guy.
EXTRA HEALTH SIR? It's like GTA hookers all over again...
SHOOT THEM IN THE FACE TO TAKE BACK YOUR 50 DOLLARS

This game is terrible.
Terribly addicting!

DANGEROUSLY CHEESY...

Rick Dangerous rip.
To be honest I expected more from Derek.

Absolutely love the game. Can't resist killing the shopkeepers and stealing the items :D
Posted by: Kairos | December 29, 2008 12:42 AM
Uhh.. I also think he's spoofing the game Spelunker that was for the NES. Well at least the title.

This game... is actually pretty amazing. I like it a lot.
As for people who compare this to Spelunker on the NES, yes the title seems like a spoof, and it is one of this game's inspirations, the gameplay is pretty radically different.

Haha, I had a great moment where I accidentally blew up part of a shop (selling Special Items!). The shopkeeper went berserk, and ended up falling off a ledge and leaving me with all his wares. I got the jetpack, the spectacles, climbing gloves and a compass all for free! Really enjoying this game.
Where is this "Tunnel Man", by the way? I finally got to the first Jungle level and died, and would love to be able to go right back there.
Posted by: superdigg | December 29, 2008 5:27 AM
Nevermind, found Tunnel Man. He built me a shortcut tunnel, but where do I find this tunnel?
Posted by: superdigg | December 29, 2008 6:57 AM
The graphics don't display properly - the intro screens flash on for a second then fade to black.
I managed to enter the game, and now can actually see somthing, but the shadows appear on top of other characters and objects making making play impossible.
Interestingly when I push ESC to pause, the graphics appear correctly. Just not when trying to actually, you know, play the dam thing.

Edit: I tried fullscreen and windowed mode, changing the colour resolution on my comp and turning on/off 'High Detail' in the game options but still no dice.
Really dissapointed, I was actually always hoping for a 2d roguelike-inspired game.

awesome pixel art. great!

Go Derek!
Posted by: Sparky | December 29, 2008 9:27 AM
Oh, found the tunnel. It didn't appear when he first said "Tunnel coming up", but it did on the second go. Bug? Who knows.

ASDF: It sounds like a video card problem. Try updating your drivers or using your integrated video card or something. I can't really say more without knowing your specific system config, but it seems like your computer can't display GM's surfaces correctly.
Posted by: Paul Eres | December 29, 2008 12:15 PM
Sometimes running Fraps can correct game maker surfaces problems. That, or a clean reboot before playing.

I've got a Nvidia Geforce 8400M G and updated drivers etc but no luck... however I read through 23 pages of the forum post and found the answer..
Restart the computer!
I should have known! (pictures the guy from IT Crowd saying: "have you tried turning it off and on again?")

Has anyone got this to work in Wine? I wanna play!
Posted by: Anonymous | December 29, 2008 4:36 PM
Hail to the king!!!!
This is an incredible piece of art. It's very addicting and fun!
One of the best indie that i've played in my whole life!
Very good job

nice game, but there something that could be improved, like the arrow trap in the first dungeon, why it take 2 lifes? its kinda of retarded cause some times you find yourself in a very tinny room and you know that you gonna get hit cause even if the arrow misses you, he hit the wall and still take life of you. Also i think that should have some powerups that you stay after you die, could be a very hard chest to open in a cenario (like 3 keys) or a boss that give you at first some crap item, like compass, and stay geting better wen you get at highter levels, could have a storage room in the main cenario for the weapons.
other than that, its a exelent game

Is there a Mac version?
Posted by: Madgarden | December 29, 2008 8:27 PM
Can anyone upload it somewhere? I have problems downloading it, getting a CRC error on all versions O_o
Posted by: MasterBoo | December 29, 2008 8:46 PM
This game is maddeningly, mouth-frothingly frustrating... and yet I keep coming back to it, again and again.
Posted by: Neddo | December 29, 2008 10:46 PM
The controls are an exercise in irritation. They're not at all intuitive and there are simply too many buttons. When you want to do something, something else will happen.
An interesting concept executed poorly. Par for the course.
Posted by: Anonymous | December 30, 2008 4:01 AM
That game looks amazing, going to download right now
Posted by: Kreender | December 30, 2008 4:10 AM
this game is such an incredible time-waster. i've sunk about sixteen hours into it.
@ anonymous complaining about the controls. there's less controls than the snes controller, and they're fully customisable, or at least in the last stable version.

What is it with buying stuff from the shop? Pressing "p" doesn't seem to do anything for me. Does it mean I haven't enough money? Where can I see the cost of the various items?
Posted by: soilworker | December 30, 2008 12:55 PM
You first have to pick up the item. You will then see its price and can decide to buy it by pressing "p". If you don't, just set it down again. You got to be really careful, though, the shopkeeper isn't one to mess with and he has definitely never heard of mercy :D
Posted by: MisterX | December 30, 2008 1:37 PM
Please add direct download link to post,'cause i banned on this forum( but i see this first)
Posted by: Toolmano | December 30, 2008 1:48 PM
Man, I love the tunnel man now...
Posted by: Coded One | December 30, 2008 9:39 PM
Thanks MisterX. That puzzled me because the first time I picked up an item the shopkeeper went crazy and shot me. Don't know, maybe I accidentally went out of the shop.
Posted by: soilworker | December 30, 2008 11:16 PM
Awesome, I just realized you guys linked to my youtube video. I'm Mastatsan AKA the Carlz0r. =D

The latest version has a basic level editor. (F2 in the main cave)
Pressing F3 lets you play your level, after which you can go through the rest of the cave as usual. This allows you to cheat by placing loads of crates and gems so you can easily reach and pay the tunnelman. Highscores won't get saved this way, but shortcuts remain.
Posted by: Anonymous | December 31, 2008 11:13 AM
Thanks for the tip about the level-editor shortcut cheat -- but what about the crates? Are they destructible? I haven't been able to break any...unless you mean chests.
Posted by: Anonymous | December 31, 2008 6:02 PM
To the anonymous above me: You can open crates the same way you open chests. Up+Action. Your action button is your whip/pickup/throw button.
Posted by: Carlz0r | December 31, 2008 7:38 PM
Weird. The shopkeeper guarded the exit and eventually shot me dead. And I didn't even interfere with him before.

A real professional game, full of touches of class.
Congratulations!
I'll play it more in the next days.

The tunnel man is the only thing that kept me sane. The only problem is I had to move to a different computer and now the tunnel is gone. Is there a certain thing I have to do to make him turn up (or is it just random)?
Also, how do you open chests with locks on them? Bombs don't seem to work, and neither do falls from a great height.
Posted by: Groogokk | January 1, 2009 10:40 PM
Groogokk - see the big keyhole on the locked chests? Well, there's a clue ;)
Superb game derek - your best yet in my opinion.
Posted by: James Monkman | January 1, 2009 11:30 PM
Yeah, James, I saw that keyhole - I've never come across a key though. I guess I'll just keep looking.
Posted by: Groogokk | January 2, 2009 8:41 AM
They should both be on the same level I think... However, I know you can carry keys from one level into the next - just keep looking ;)
Posted by: James Monkman | January 2, 2009 4:23 PM
great game derek yu.
even though I'm about to start ripping my hair out.
have you guys really managed to get 100,000. for the tunnelman?
and just so im sure.. there is no save function right?
but when i press escape it reads 'saves: 2' ...as in saved a dame twice?
Posted by: hammedhaaret | January 2, 2009 7:21 PM
problem solved, hair intact, tunnel dug and the game just got an extra thumb' up from me.

hey i found someting called the "Black Market it was a door on level six after i blew a hole in the ground and there was another door, when i walked in the shopkeeper said "Welcome to the Black Market" but since i pissed off one of them before on level 3 there were like 15 shopkeepers trying to kill me, but before they killed me i looked around and saw that there are like 15 shops there where you can buy almost anything its basicaly a hidden door since i only got to it once then died im not sure if it randomly is placed on any given level and you have to blow up a piece of the ground to get to it or if its only on level six im going to try and get more information on this...
