Freeware Game Pick: The Legend of Princess (Konjak)
high quality video, screenshots
Note: video contains spoilers.
The Legend of Princess is a 2D platformer created by the developer of Chalk and the Noitu Love series, where players get to step into the shoes of a tunic-wearing hero on a quest to rescue a kidnapped princess. As with most of Joakim's releases, there are plenty of memorable boss encounters to be had here.
Note that the game has only one playable level, although arcade veterans could technically replay the entire adventure at a higher difficulty setting by choosing a different set of starting equipment with each new try. Also, the chances of getting a rare blue or red gem increases if you defeat more enemies and avoid getting hurt too frequently.

Beaten with Hook+Bow. Whoa, this is incredible.
Posted by: Nosgoroth | January 25, 2009 4:52 PM
Best game so far this year. Probably better then the last few zelda games.

Cave Story rip-off
Posted by: man | January 25, 2009 5:32 PM
Oooh! Noitu Love 2 is now $10.
Posted by: Archagon | January 25, 2009 5:36 PM
Wow, this was awesome!
Posted by: Chetyre | January 25, 2009 5:58 PM
@man: go back to TIGSource, you.
Posted by: Anonymous | January 25, 2009 6:00 PM
Too bad that it runs with 10 fps on my pc...
Posted by: Bleagle | January 25, 2009 6:02 PM
Thanks people!
Yeah, there's the chance it will run slow because I can only make it software rendered...
Try some different video settings.
Posted by: konjak | January 25, 2009 6:18 PM
Wow Konjak! You did it again! This is going in my "best indie games" folder.
Posted by: Knite | January 25, 2009 6:44 PM
So I got to what I think was the "final boss" (Captain Gohnad?) but couldn't figure out how to do damage to his "crippling weak point"... it would just ping and he'd close up again. Ended up quitting the game cause I was so stumped :(
Posted by: softy | January 25, 2009 6:48 PM
ok i beat the game its really awesome :D
Posted by: Rehbock | January 25, 2009 6:48 PM
I knew you wouldn't disappoint with the bosses! :D Fantastic work!
Posted by: BenH | January 25, 2009 6:48 PM
Really a very impressive game. I had a lot of fun playing it even though I ran into a glitch that made me get stick mid attack while in the water. I had to restart since there was no way for me to die or do anything.
- But I didn't mind playing through it again.
Posted by: coreymill | January 25, 2009 7:15 PM
Wow. That's stunning for a freebie.
Posted by: PoV | January 25, 2009 7:22 PM
fantastic. absolutely fantastic!
Posted by: AuthenticKaizen | January 25, 2009 7:53 PM
Thanks again, guys.
coreymill, that sounds weird, could you explain more?
Posted by: konjak | January 25, 2009 8:17 PM
I love the game, but I couldnt figure out how to beat dark link my evil twin when he was attacking me from underneath the water.
Posted by: Loki | January 25, 2009 8:28 PM
Yeah, sure.
- It was when I went into the left door that you unlock with a silver key. I believe it was the first area that closed which you have to beat a series of enemies before it opens again. Anyway, there was water in the middle and then land on the left and right as well as on floating square of land above in the middle.
- When the first enemies appeared. The two octoroc guys on the left and right. I jumped into the water and tried to just attack the guy on the right while floating in the water, but my sword got stuck on the first swing. It stopped on a frame with the sword being held straight out. I could float left and right while stuck but could not jump, attack, or move up and down at all.
Posted by: coreymill | January 25, 2009 8:35 PM
Loki: you can downward stab, it took my a while to figure that one out.
Forgot to mention that I also noticed you can stand and hit that secret wall with your sword (right after that section with the red block on the floor near the beginning) and it warps you up to the floor above it. Doesn't really effect gameplay at all or kill you so it's not a big deal.
Posted by: coreymill | January 25, 2009 8:41 PM
Absolutely fantastic Konjak. Found a slight bug where if you float into the final bosses room holding a chicken you can attack and fly around at the same time. Brilliant game!
Posted by: mrpeach32 | January 25, 2009 8:47 PM
really great
Posted by: farik | January 25, 2009 8:58 PM
Beautiful game, love it!
Maybe you can go back in time and sell it to Capcom somwhere during the 90s;-)
Btw, are there any plans to expand it with further levels/bosses? I would gladly shell out 10$ for a 4-5 level game:-)
Posted by: phos4 | January 25, 2009 9:36 PM
I fixed the wall bug, the chicken bug and added a blurb about the down-attack in the controls menu.
I couldn't replicate the water bug though...
Posted by: konjak | January 25, 2009 10:04 PM
Awesome! I like this game very much. Very frenetic and with stunning graphics!
The different kind of weapons that can be used make the game replayable after you have finished it. =)
I can often notice some slow-downs, but I haven't got a too fast computer.
Additionally, playing the game on a 16:10 monitor, I can't get a not stretched fullscreen resolution. Why?
Fullscreen mode 1 and mode 2 gimme the same results.
Posted by: Naufr4g0 | January 25, 2009 11:39 PM
Hey, you guys put my let's play up, cool.
The videos are split by boss, the first goes up to the Shadow Kink, the second one is Phantom Ganon, and the last video is the King Gohnad.
Posted by: kirbypawn | January 26, 2009 12:16 AM
Now imagine how much better the infamous CDi Zelda games would have been if Konjak had a hand in them...
Posted by: mr | January 26, 2009 12:51 AM
Another glitch that happened to me was that the boomerang got stuck spinning in the air, killing everything that touched it. Think taking a hit while throwing it triggered that one.
Great game. Lots of fun.
Posted by: Kvalsternacka | January 26, 2009 1:25 AM
It seems a lot of people love this game anyway I am going to try this one too. I am looking for new games to play anyway. Is this apt for kids too?
Posted by: crush25 | January 26, 2009 1:33 AM
It's no more violent than any of the real Zelda games.
Posted by: Chetyre | January 26, 2009 1:55 AM
@Naufr4g0
Maybe your graphics card is automatically stretching it.
There should be an option to keep the aspect ratio...
Posted by: phos4 | January 26, 2009 2:05 AM
Naufr4g0, same here. It forces me into "Full Screen".
Posted by: Lizzie | January 26, 2009 2:11 AM
Wait, I recognize that boss. That's supposed to be phantom Ganondorf and it looks kinda like the Ganondorf from LoZ: Windwaker.
Posted by: Gio | January 26, 2009 4:00 AM
That is so awesome.
Posted by: Jason Shaffer | January 26, 2009 4:07 AM
@phos4: I can't find an option about aspect ratio on the control panel of my GeForce Go 6100. It stretches any resolution different from the native one (1280x800).
@Lizzie: I haven't got any problem about play the game in a window, when I select 1x,2x or 3x modes.
Posted by: Naufr4g0 | January 26, 2009 4:25 AM
@softy: Boss (slight spoilers below)
His head glows slightly blue in the cracked skull when his mouth opens. You have to hit that with your special weapon (really hard with the bomb-rat, but do-able). Then it makes the gem hit-able. I was on the boss for 20 straight minutes before I figured that out.
Posted by: Ruke | January 26, 2009 5:01 AM
I also got stuck frozen in the water, I can move left/right, but am stuck in a sword swing animation. http://i39.tinypic.com/9u9k3m.jpg
Also another bug is I couldn't seem to pick up the fire bag thing after I fell in the water and it was half on the land.
Posted by: Anonymous | January 26, 2009 5:19 AM
Another bug... I seem to have lost my boomerang at King Gohnad. Not sure how it happened, but yeah pressing that button does nothing, though it is still shown up in the top corner.
Posted by: Anonymous | January 26, 2009 5:39 AM
I got the same stuck-in-water bug at the same area as previously mentioned. My character was stuck doing the down-thrust attack repeatedly. Then on my second playthrough the game just froze while I was fighting the reflection enemy; I had to close the program through the Task Manager because it wasn't responding to anything.
It's a fun game, at least the part I got to play, but the fact that I can't seem to play without hitting a game-stopping bug worries me.
Posted by: Neddo | January 26, 2009 6:02 AM
@Naufr4g0
I don't have an Nvidia card anymore but...there should be the option "fixed-aspect ratio scaling" somewhere in your control panel. Select it and hit apply.
Posted by: phos4 | January 26, 2009 11:51 AM
Great game! The chicken is a stroke of genius. My only complaint is the awkward and un-changeable button arrangement. ASD? What's wrong with good old LShift-Z-X?
Posted by: Mischief Maker | January 26, 2009 12:28 PM
Mischief Maker> it is just a sign that everyone now plays lots of FPS games!
Posted by: Anonymous | January 26, 2009 12:42 PM
A S D are the best keys
cause the Z and Y key is switched on the Geman keyboard what can be often annoying so not using the y and the z key helps us Germanzzzzzzzzzzzzz alot
Posted by: Daso | January 26, 2009 1:52 PM
Yes, I use ASD for two reasons. I prefer them, and they're the same across all QWERTY-keyboards.
Posted by: konjak | January 26, 2009 1:57 PM
This. Is. Great.
Bring on some more dungeons and I'll be glad to pay for your awsome work Joakim!
Posted by: Chris the independent gamer | January 26, 2009 3:17 PM
Incredible look, color, graphic design (even if you had models :p ), programmation ! You rock man,...
What language (or soft) do you use to do your soft?
Posted by: Zakstudio | January 26, 2009 6:14 PM
Seriouslly good work. Takes me back to the Zelda 2 NES, the CDi Zelda games(only a little), along with some of the GB/GBC/GBA Zeldas(Roc's Feather!) in awesome 16-bit+ graphics. Shame you can't sell a large version(due to Nintendo's Copyrighted property name).
The game supports my Gamepad, a Logitech RumblePad 2, and I'm superhappy that it has resoultion choices.
konjak so your "burnt-out making arcadey action games for awhile"...hmmm maybe puzzle/rpg sometime? :P
Posted by: Kenny | January 26, 2009 6:20 PM
This is quite simply one of the very best action platformers I have ever played.
This needs to be turned into a full game and released on the likes of WiiWare, DS, Xbox Live Arcade, PSN and whatever else.
Posted by: Kirk | January 26, 2009 7:21 PM
To those of you that say you'd pay for a full -length version of this: unless Konjak could present a convincing argument that this game is a parody, I think he'd be in a bit of trouble if he tried to sell it.
Posted by: mr | January 26, 2009 9:35 PM
Amazing work, THE best game I played this year. Found a crashbug though: when the flying hand touched the block the second time, the game crashed without any specific details. Had the feather and the boomerang and the block was two levels down, if that's of importance.
Played it through two more times after that and found nothing besides awesomness. Guess i'll have to buy Noitu 2 then ;)
Posted by: Anonymous | January 26, 2009 10:01 PM
Oh man, two (well, three) words:
You're hired!
Excellent work in every aspect of the game!

MAC?
Posted by: roger | January 27, 2009 1:41 PM
An awesome throwback to my 16 bit years.Thx for such a kickass zelda tribute. You can definitely tell that this was indeed a labor of hyrule side scrolling love. Make more levels pleeeeeeeeeeeeease!!!
Posted by: The GSK | January 27, 2009 5:25 PM
@Ruke
Thanks for the solution. I noticed that crack in his skull but it didn't click for me that that was the approach. Also, I was using the bomb-rat, so I guess I would have been struggling for awhile, anyway...
I'm satisfied with the extent that I played. Hope I didn't miss a super neat ending or something!
Posted by: softy | January 27, 2009 6:21 PM
It runs way too slow to be playable for me (Centrino 1.6GHz). What a shame, this looks like a nice game.
Posted by: Argh | January 27, 2009 6:35 PM
same thing for me. actually noitu love 2 runs alot faster on my pc.
Posted by: gio | January 28, 2009 1:03 AM
Are their any other games out their that play like this? (other then Noitu love)
Posted by: Rafi | January 28, 2009 9:23 PM
Smile on my face the entire time and loved the tree room reflection and boss name. Laughed from surprise and delight. Good work, made my desire for a new Zelda game all the more unbearable.
Posted by: DJ | January 29, 2009 12:41 AM
this is Sweat! only problem is that the music thosent work for me :(
Posted by: franky-du | January 30, 2009 11:52 AM
Great game, beat it with all items :)
Posted by: pardoman | January 30, 2009 8:53 PM
@Rafi: I found the game Akuji the Demon to be fairly similar, albeit somewhat more slow-paced. I've also heard Eternal Daughter is similar.
But yeah, it's possible this is the best Nintendo tribute game since Mario Forever.
Posted by: mr | January 31, 2009 3:18 AM
WOW, I LOVE THIS. I miss playing games like these, I also love Noitu love 2 and I hope you continue making action games later. I wish I knew where to find more games like these. I checked out those 2 that pardoman recommended but I ain't feelin' too much.
Posted by: Fuze | February 1, 2009 7:27 AM

Note to all Mac users: Completely compatible with Darwine, it played perfectly!

LOL whoever said this is a cavestory rip off hasnt played cave story or is just fucking retarded. that is all.
Posted by: asdfasf | February 2, 2009 3:01 PM
I would gladly pay real money for a game that played like this. This is by far better than recent Zelda games. GREAT!
Posted by: Indego Rune | February 2, 2009 11:39 PM
It keep saying there in a virus.
Posted by: jay | February 7, 2009 11:11 PM
I've been getting mail about that, I'm trying to figure it out
Posted by: konjak | February 7, 2009 11:51 PM
It seems likely to be a false positive on AVG's part. Try other MMF2 games to see if the same happens (like Noitu 2 or Bernie's games).
Posted by: konjak | February 8, 2009 12:25 AM
oh, god, that's amazing. i really wanna more playable levels!!1
Posted by: drfent | February 8, 2009 10:42 AM
I've played this a LOT so far - the allure of trying to find secrets is strong :) My favorite combo is bow + hookshot, and the most I've gotten so far is 3928 rupees.
I have one question though - what did you use to record your playthrough for posting? I tried FRAPS and it didnt seem to pick up.
Posted by: Daeryn | February 8, 2009 6:44 PM
Camstudio (free) with the lossless codec works beautifully.
Posted by: Tim | February 8, 2009 6:52 PM
Certainly wasn't expecting to play an orgasmic little game today, but there it is.
Haven't even played with the other items yet.
Posted by: Imadjinn | February 9, 2009 3:00 PM
uhhhhhhh damn hot this game ;-)
it's zelda juhuuu
this is the game of the year 2009, it's better than resident evil 5 or far cry 2 hahahahahaha

Thank you Joakim. Thank you for letting me experience one of the most inspirational of my life. I flipped out when a friend of mine showed me the gameplay video of Legend Of Princess and I loved it even more when I played it myself. I still have the Dark Kink boss fight music stuck in my head. Konjak is now one of the few indie game house's who's future titles I'm looking forward too. I plan on playing more of Noitu Love and wish you luck on Solar Plexus.
Posted by: gunswordfist | February 17, 2009 4:03 AM
Great game, the only suggestion I have is with the boss with the flaming sword who you hit the energy ball back and forth with- when he hovers above you and hits his sword down at you, it should come down faster after you damage him a certain amount to make it harder. I found that part a little repetitive and too easy to avoid his sword. Overall though amazing game.
Posted by: Random Dude | April 8, 2009 1:40 PM
Dear Konjak:
Please convince Nintendo to not sue you, then make a full-length version of this for WiiWare. This is the best Zelda game that has come out since Link's Awakening and it should be official.
Kthx.
Posted by: Anonymous | April 11, 2009 2:36 AM
I agree with mr(s). anonymous in convincing nintendo not to sue you and make it full length and buyable and stuff. Or render things different colors and call it something different. either way, make full length. i'd buy it. and be very happy. and stuff.
