Freeware Game Pick: Exit Fate (SCF)
Exit Fate is a new full-length RPG from SCF, creator of the well-received RPGMaker effort Last Scenario. The game not only features standard 2D battle encounters but boasts a tactical strategy mode as well, in which players must assume control over legions of troops, issue commands and lead their armies to a crushing victory. Bonus items are awarded for good results, especially if the fight ends quickly with minimal losses to your side.
A new addition is the bribe system, allowing players to avoid potentially dangerous encounters by using the local currency as a bargaining device. Use the C key to confirm your selections, or press the X key to cancel your choices.
The magic system is also a slight departure from most common RPGs. You earn mana points as the battle progresses, meaning that most spells can only be cast after several turns. The number of times a spell can be used in each battle is limited, but unused healing spells are cast automatically to restore the health of party members after battle.
Press the Left Alt and Enter key to switch between full screen and windowed mode. This game comes highly recommended if you're a big fan of RPGs, and wouldn't mind a couple of ripped sound effects, music and familiar-looking tilesets. (SA forum thread)

I liked Last Scenario, with all the crap expensive RPGs blockbusters going around, it came that year (was it 2 years ago already?) and for me it bettered those in many accounts -except for the main character, who was kind of goofy :); art design, ole' style battle system, story and char development were all good by all standards, even more taking into account that it was only one guy working on it and the game was free -also the card mini-games and unlockable items were really cool-. It was a very good and refreshing implementation of your old console (japanese) RPG style. Here's hoping Exit Fate is as good (or better) than LS!

What's the story about.

Been playing almost nonstop since yesterday. Exit Fate takes everything that was good about Last Scenario and improves on it.

Wow, I didn't know Origami was working on another RPG.
Has the hexagon tile game (ugh forgot the name of it) made a return? That was a fun side game in LS :P.

I feel silly for not knowing this, but what happens to the characters you recruit once your party and entourage are full?
I just got the ability to recruit and I quickly filled up my party and entourage, but I have no idea what happened to the characters I got after that since I couldn't put them anywhere and backed out of the "Arrange" menu.
I certainly hope I didn't just lose them altogether.

Thanks! I actually found out that you can talk to the red-suited guy in the right room on the first floor of the castle and he'll let you access all the characters you've unlocked so you can rearrange your party/entourage.
I remember the guy telling me this before he let me go recruit, so I felt like smacking myself for forgetting.

So I finally got round to starting the game, and it just crashes as soon as I start it up:
'RGSS Player has stopped working'
I'm running on Vista 64bit, tried running it in all the various compatibility modes with no luck.
If I can't play this game I'm not gonna be happy, anyone got any ideas? :

Very awesome. Outshines the commercially made suikoden 1/2 in my opinion and considering it was a one man operation...wow.
Great length (30+ hours for all sidequesting) and considering most other good indies run under 20 also good. Great graphics the bad thing is the lack of variety in music. The same FF and xenogears songs get used over and over.
Reward for all 75 is a battle plan in your base basement for a hard hard fight+ unlocking of 6 shadow bosses (hard)
In a place similar to farplane go north from 2nd save point, beat the boss you can come back u are likely unprepared for them then the following unlock (do in order)
Orphanage levrier top floor
Matreach erin office
Castle in st reinard
Muspelheim inn/bldg top floor
inn at alfheim
nifleheim woods
No reward for getting all interviews but a good backstory and as far as I can tell no reward for A ranking all battle simulations.
Game also has hidden scenes depending on who is in the party (bring griever to the last castle for one, suspect shin has one, and yan too)

@ Anonymous: This game is inspired by Suidoken, what's more, from what I know it is a homage to the Siudoken games.
