Browser Game Pick: Bang! Heroes (Three Rings)
Bang! Heroes is a western platforming shoot-em-up with some pretty nice Steampunk-style graphics and a lot of gun-totting.
Created by the guys behind Whirled, the game has a really great feel to it and has tons of little features to give a worthwhile gaming experience, like upgrades and achievements. There's also multiplayer, but at the moment it has been taken down due to server issues. Sounds like it will be a lot of fun to play against a friend, though.
Give the game a whirl over at... well... Whirled.

Amazing production values for a flash game. Love the music. Too bad the lack of enemy variety and the fact that running past all the enemies is the best strategy ruin the game.

First off AWESOME GAME!!
@ Anon: Doesn't sound like you played the game farther than the first level or so. It is DEEP for a Flash game and with a bunch of different enemies introduced as you go along. The scorpion level I just played wouldn't let you leave until you'd beaten a certain number of the enemies too so yeah I'm guessing you only played a couple levels. I know what I'm doing with my Sunday. This game rox!

Me again. I played to about the fourth level of the second "world," so I do know what I'm talking about. I recant my lack of enemy variety statement. It is not so much the number of enemy types that is the problem, the problem is that the player keeps seeing the exact same enemies over and over and it becomes quite monotonous. The right way to do it would have been to cycle through the enemy types as the player progresses, like a Mega Man game.

I've played through both "worlds" now, meaning I finished that Buzzard Break level. I'm not sure if that is all? Seemingly you can only go back to the first world to the left of the town and to the second to its right. So, I guess that's it?
Anyway, I got to somewhat agree to both of you. The beginning of the game is awfully slow and comparatively boring. Not really that interesting gameplay and what bugged me most was the low damage. Too often I was just standing there shooting an enemy who couldn't fight back. One shot, two shots, three shots, four shots - finally he's down.
And then, at the end of it, pretty much all of a sudden: Here you go, get yourself a double jump, faster firing rate, more damage, a special attack. Would you also like a diving move? And what about extra card slots?
So, the second world was a lot more enjoyable, but it also eventually got rather boring because of the lack of variety, but it was definitely worth playing in my opinion.
And then, lastly, there was a horribly boring, absolutely anticlimactic boss fight which took far too long. I don't get what happened there, in comparison to the rest of the game this was just.. bad.
So, finally, if that was really all: Well, yeah, an okay game, rather good if you don't get put off too much by the first half. Still, it falls well short of all the potential there is.

By the way, this is obviously related to "Bang! Howdy", a turn-based tactics game in 3D with seemingly good production values that is set in the same scenario. It won the award for Technical Excellence at the IGF '07 and is said to be free to play. I haven't tried it yet, though.

I tried it out, and I agree--it's good but really monotonous.

Oh wow, that Whirled looks pretty cool. I had never heard anything about it.

Bang! Howdy rocks. Mentioning Whirled instead of it in the initial post may be a crime.
