Ska Studios' The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai was released yesterday for the Xbox Live Arcade and I've been giving it a play. It's a platforming side-scroller with a huge dose of the ow-eys - there's blood splatter everywhere, scary-looking knives, heavy-duty weaponry and comic violence galore.

On the face of it, it's pretty much a button basher - think The Behemoth's forte with internal organs throw in (or out, depending on how you look at it). There's an underlying skills set, however, for those looking for more depth, with plenty of button combos to make your blade-wielding crazy man pull off some equally crazy moves. Correctly finishing enemies with the right move reaps rewards so it's always worth laying off the controller for a second to check how best to take your victim.

It's multiplayer too, which makes all the difference with this kind of game, and it's as fun as you'd expect. There's all the game modes you'd expect too - a main story line, an arcade mode and a special, unlockable mode for completists.

The aspect which sets Dishwasher apart from the likes of Castle Crashers (apart from the obvious age rating) is that, graphically, it's a beauty to behold. The gloomy surroundings and brilliantly detailed backdrops coupled with a camera which zooms around, focusing on all your gory beheadings is all done so well and Ska Studios should definitely be commended for it.

The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai is available for 800 MS Points and is definitely worth checking out. Download the demo if you want to try before you buy.

Oh, and if you're wondering about the guitar bits in the game... check out the video below. It doesn't really need any explanation.

ive played the demo and this game is a total riot! Amazing for one guy.. it really is.

IndieWebBlog what are you on about though? No idea why youre comparing this to the behemoth, they have never released a platformer hack n' slash, a better comparison would be a 2D Devil May Cry..also,

"sets Dishwasher apart from the likes of Castle Crashers, is that, graphically, it's a beauty to behold"

Castle Crashers looks amazing! I think the animation and design is tons better than dishwasher, but thats a given..because Dan Paladin is an artist and doesnt have to focus on the technical side.

I played the demo and it's great, I'm seriously thinking abouy buying the full version. However, I'm wondering, how long is the game? Is it fun to play it in coop?
