astatine.jpg

Astatine is an apocalyptic platform which focuses on exploration, combat and story. Astatine wakes up in a strange place and, with the help of a spirit, tries to remember who he is and why he is there.

It's pretty much your classic exploration platformer with quite an interesting story and lots of zombies and evil, unpleasant things to kill. The game runs in a small window but strangely for me didn't seem to have any sound or music, although one of the game's tips states that pressing M turns the music on and off, so it may possibly just be my system.

It's a nice little thing to pass away some time on a Sunday afternoon. Download Astatine here.

Nice to see Astatine getting the attention it deserves.

However you've got an old version.
The newest is here: http://gmc.yoyogames.com/index.php?showtopic=424619

@Rolf: Oh, are you sure? Phillip emailed me with that link only yesterday.

I played that game some time ago. It was quite enjoyable!

Whoops, strange - I thought I updated the link. The new version should be here:

Thanks for the feature :)

Okey dokey, updated with the new link.

made with GM Lite, so it cost nothing to make!

I really wish that GameMaker games wouldn't use X and Y as default. For many keyboards, that's in separate places. Why not use control, alt or shift keys, that are less likely to change?

Another thing that annoys me, is again the whole "the character is a walking tank" who cannot grab ledges, cannot aim downwards and cannot crawl. My character also cannot throw punches or kicks and helplessly stands there when my health is depleted by the enemy simply touching me.

As for the story? "Plot dependent amnesia"? Oh please. It's a cliché and most people cringe when they hear it. It's the tool of a lazy, uncreative writer.

Other than that though, the game is pretty decent, by Game Maker standards anyway.

I've updated the FAQ a bit to include help on configuring key settings for non-standard QWERTY and ZXC keyboards.

- 'I really wish that GameMaker games wouldn't use X and Y as default. For many keyboards, that's in separate places. Why not use control, alt or shift keys, that are less likely to change?'

It's not really Game Maker dependent, so blame me. I went for the Cave Story-esque control scheme, though it lets you use Z or Y for those with QWERTZ.

I wholeheartedly support the whole world switching to Dvorak, but that's nowhere in sight, unfortunately, and Shift/Alt/Control are horrifying most people (don't ask me why - they just go and complain about it)

- 'Another thing that annoys me, is again the whole "the character is a walking tank" who cannot grab ledges, cannot aim downwards and cannot crawl. My character also cannot throw punches or kicks and helplessly stands there when my health is depleted by the enemy simply touching me.'

There's a chainsaw instead of punches you see... and the gameplay isn't really based on realism so much as mechanics used by other platformers, eg. Cave Story, or shooters, eg. Quake. Not everyone may like that, sure, but you can't make everyone happy.

Cliché indeed. But that's just for the beginning and, oh well, I would say "play on and you'll see a more interesting plot elements" but that would unfortunately require you to play through the whole game, and seeing as you don't like it, I'm not expecting that ;)

Very nice game, i really enjoyed the ending, and have a pretty good difficult.
This is madness! lol

about Z,X - Y,X issue:

just press Shift+Alt simultanouly and they are swapped on the fly. its as easy as that.
pretty useful.
thanks to tim for that tip on his faqs.

@ Adam

Haha, you have been spoiled with those other types of games. But yeah, it's not bad.

I personally dislike using alt because there are so many alt + [key] combinations in windows that i could accidentally press. Alt + Space, for example, opens a menu in most windows.
