Preview: Critter Crunch (Capy)
Extremely odd trailer ahoy! Critter Crunch by Toronto-based developer Capy is coming this summer to the Playstation Network and the team have just released the above trailer for it.
Critter Crunch is to be an arcade-puzzler based around "an original and award-winning “food chain” puzzle mechanic, which is all about feeding critters into each other until they burst.".
It'll be single-player, multiplayer and co-op, with lots of lovely trophies for you people who crave shiny things. Check out the Capy site for all the info.

This is one of the hidden gems on the iPhone. Too bad it never reached the top half of the rankings eventhough this was available from the start of the App Store.

The "original and award-winning puzzle mechanic" looks to me to be exactly like the "money exchange" mechanic from
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Money_Idol_Exchanger
I do not know, who came up first with that idea, though.

'tis a magical drop iteration.

Looks a little different from Money Exchanger to me. In ME you need to clump together groups of coins to add up to the next level, in this you feed a critter a level (or more?) lower to another critter to start a chain reaction akin to Magical Drop. Seems like some inspiration was taken from the Puzzle Fighter school of having separate trigger gems, but then turned it back in on itself by having the trigger items in turn be base items to be comboed. Seems like an interesting twist, and in oversaturated genres like this, it's that little twist on the established core gameplay and the style of your trappings that set one game apart from another.
And you have to admit, this is looking like it's got a strong personality. Rainbow-puking is always a plus in my book.

Guess I have to try it out myself, and it looks indeed very interesting.
"Original" just irritated me. Hopefully they don't get into trouble as the wikipedia article states that creators of ME got sued to death...

I feel kinda of sad such a game with great animations like this is a simple puzzle game, it would be great as a plataform game or something like that.

The iPhone version was really fun, I'm looking forward to trying this.

don't be sad, be happy that you get to play a beautiful puzzle game for a change, instead of generic blocks and bubbles.

If you check out the iphone version, you'll see that's it's not a Money Exchanger clone. There are similarities, but it's not a bad thing.

Yeah, the graphics are great but I don't know if I'll buy it. We'll see what the price is I guess!
