Xbox Live Community Games Becoming 'Indie Games'
Towards the end of July, Xbox Live Community Games will be getting a name change, becoming 'Xbox Live Indie Games'.
Not the most exciting or interesting news, but news which is sure to receive split opinions from indie developers, with those releasing games through the platform most likely to be pleased that their games can now attempt to ride the recent spurt of indie successes, while others won't be so happy that titles such as Remote Masseuse now have the 'indie' tag.
I'd love to know how developers from both sides feel. Is it even that big a deal? Surely a simple name change won't mean much at all?

Well, there's indie and "indie". If the changes they promised us will be only the name of the platform, then it's just marketing. Hope there will be more, like votes, classification, etc...

It's official, Microsoft now has exclusive rights to indie games. Poor Cave Story and Night Game.

I think Indie just sounds better than community games. This is the right title in my opinion. Rankings is also a great addition.

its a very sad attempt to make some poorly made clones sound more appealing than they really are. there are already indie games on xbl and im sure there are some in the community games too. but dont dress it up because they mostly are just crap.
ms you are giving indie a bad name!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey guys, is it okay if we just take your community's identity from you and market it for our own profit? Yeah? Okay cool, thanks.
CHA-CHING! $ $ $...

This is cool, except that there is a lot of marketing junk on XBLCG, games that you'd never talk about if they were not available on your xbox.
A lot of them are nothing but flash games, except you can play with a xbox controller.
Typical example : http://marketplace.xbox.com/fr-FR/games/media/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d802585501fb

So, they change the name to try to sell it better, what's the problem guys?
It looks like you're ranting about things that doesn't matter or putting words in MS mouth that they never said.
MS never assumed it has the "exclusivity" for indie games. And, BTW, according to the term indie (independent) all the games in the Community section are indie games. Whether or not they are QUALITY indie games is another matter. But there're lots of crappy indie games for PC out there and nobody complains they call themselves indie, why complain to MS when they do the same thing?
MS is trying to market better the games that some people in their homes do. So that move is good for MS (they get a 30% of the benefits) and the developers (they get the remaining 70%). I think that it's completely legit to try to market your services the best possible and I think that they are fooling no one with these things. Especially since all XBLCG have a demo version that you can download to decide whether or not you're interested in the game.
I personally think that MS is doing a great job helping the indie community with the tools and services they are offering, either for free or charging a very small amount. And I don't understand when you critizise them just for trying to improve the service and the revenue for the developers (and themselves along the way).

"(they get a 30% of the benefits) and the developers (they get the remaining 70%)"
last time I checked it's vice versa

Looks like MS still have a long way to go before the general public actually understands what the service is.
"Well, there's indie and "indie""
Uh, what? What does this even mean?
"It's official, Microsoft now has exclusive rights to indie games."
How you've reached this is beyond me. They haven't done anything remotely like this.
"Hey guys, is it okay if we just take your community's identity from you and market it for our own profit?"
I don't understand how they are taking anyone's identity away. Independent game developers don't own the term 'indie', which is just short for 'independent' anyway. You think you're part of some exclusive 'indie developer' club? Which one? indiegamer.com forums? tigsource? gamedev.net? freegamedev.net?
"last time I checked it's vice versa"
Not even true with XBLA, which is probably what you're thinking of. With XBLCG devs get 70, although MS reserves the right to take an extra cut if they promote your game.

Andy's post is hilarious. Yeah, like most independent games aren't unplayable crap off of the 360. I'd dare say the ratio is WORSE.

Just a word .

I always thought 'Community Games' was kind of clunky.
I'd prefer it if they left 'games' off the title altogether.
"XBox Live Indie" sounds better and is truer.

Wait, so I guess Castle Crashers and N+ weren't indie?

They're as "indie" as Miner Dig Deep, Blow, Carneyvale Showtime, Clover, Johnny Platform's Biscuit Romp, Weapon of Choice, Biology Battle, Solar, etc...
What's your point?
