Learn the true meaning of Free Will through the most realistic Game Boy adventure you've ever seen!

It's a joke, folks, so don't get too stressed at it's seemingly strange design choices. As for whether it's funny or not... well, let's just say this isn't your normal idea of free will.

It's over at Kongregate. (source: Mouse No!)

next time he should make fire at will

Clever.

The onion is named Will? Lol!

At least it's not Willy

Goddamn artsy 'games'.. waste of time.
The worst is that the first time I ran it the kb control was shitty, and that did seem to be a bug. So when it started the replay, I thought it was another bug. Unless the broken (working but buggy) controls on first play is by artsy design as well?

Yeah, it is.

Agree on the arsty game thing. It's a joke and not a terribly funny one either.

Does make a notice note with itself about the expectations of players and the like but still, I'm not laughing.

I don't really get what they were trying to say with this. I mean, if they're trying to say free will doesn't exist, why is the player allowed to control themselves at the start?

This is an example of how boring the 'free will vs determinism' debate is.

Clever. Snarky, slightly pretentious, but clever.

As for the free will thing, I think the creator was trying to push that the platformer genre as a whole is a paragon of determinism in gaming—one start, one finish. Sure, you might have branching paths, you might get more coins, but it doesn't change anything. At all.

I appreciate what he's trying to do, and at the very least I'm sure he's getting a good laugh at some of the comments on Kongregate.

It seems they aren't really commenting on free will at all- instead, that you can't go back and do things all over again, you can only recall your mistakes and learn from them. That's my take. I agree that it isn't particularly funny or fun to play and therefore a waste of time.

It bothers me how many people are offended because this game isn't fun enough. Games aren't a medium for dopamine releases.

I laughed when I saw my replay and saw how predictable my actions were. I also thought it was funny how much watching me play was like actually playing

If a game isn't fun, it shouldn't exist. It's an interesting joke for about 10 seconds, and then it was annoying. A nicely styled, interesting platformer. It's a pity these particular game designers were born/involved with the game though, because people dislike it when arty jokes get in the way of gameplay.

Wow, a lot of bile from a few anonymous commentators. Not much to respond when you are criticizing the entire genre of "artsy games" (if that is indeed a genre). I mean, it's like some people want me to apologize for not being their dancing little monkey today. Most of my games aren't artsy so just give me one day off, ok?

One of you suggested the controls are broken but seriously, I think that's the first time I've been told that (and the game has gotten more than 800 comments on Kongregate and Newgrounds). Maybe that's an arrogant way to respond, but I think the controls are mostly fine. Maybe the hit detection is a little off in one or two places, but I'd say that's about it.

There is one pun in the game, but I wouldn't say the game itself is a joke. Yes, that's a pretentious thing to say, but where the hell would the world be if people weren't a little pretentious from time to time?

Yes, you are right, that's an arrogant way to respond.

... but then again most of the anonymous commentators that criticized the game were twice as arrogant and at least four times as snide so I think you'll let it slide.

I normaly like "artsy games", but this is just junk, its like the creator told to himself "i'm gonna make some random crap and make the players think in some deep meaning for it."

...no I won't. And if your excuse for being arrogant is that others are more arrogant, grow up.

Yeah, it's funny for all of ten seconds. So what? It's good while it lasts - I like it.

Bashing a game is OK. Bashing an entire genre is a sign that you need to stay away from that genre.

...this comment was predetermined.

This is not really an art game. The gameplay is pretty generic and boring, but it's a good prank game. The effort in the game doesn't seem to worth the joke, but seeing how popular it got I guess it was worth it.

Blimey, there's some real venom being spat about in here.

I thought it was a spot on little flash game. The music was sweet and the visuals were really charming. I didn't make one bad jump so I can only conclude the controls are sound. Perfectly formed if you ask me.

Seems as though some people haven't got enough to bitch about.

I like the gameboy visuals. Makes me feel pretty nostalgic.

Why do games even need to be art in the first place? Is chess art? Is go art? Is soccer art? If they aren't art, is that such a great tragedy?

is it a tragedy if they are? nobody said games have to be art, but if they can be, what's wrong with that?

You made me waste a good minute of my life playing this game and then minutes more reading a posting this comment!!!!!

I agree with Anonymous | July 7, 2009 3:02 AM everyone involved with this game should NEVER HAVE BEEN BORN!!!!!! We must go back in time and STOP THEM FROM BEING BORN!!!!!!

Anybody who's getting their anus tightened up because they don't like how a game was - find a better way to spend your time/life and something better to worry about.

I thought it was clever, and it was nice to see that you could actually 'beat' the game.

This game was pure flash-gold. Seriously one of the best flash games i've ever played, right next to You have to burn the rope. And there was no sarcasm in this comment. Not one bit.

:)

Christ, people take their game seriously here...

Well, I liked it. Had no qualms with the gameplay, or pun. I really don't know what anyone else was expecting.

Were people really expecting this art game to address (or answer, loll) the title?

The protagonist is a turnip. Give Will a break...

People expect too much from roots.

Nice!
Unlike most grumpy commenters here, I laughed and liked the concept.

Shure it's short and a one time only joke, but so what?

I don't have a problem with games that don't fit the mainstream concept of what a game is or should be...
