Elbert Perez has released a free-to-download PC version of his upcoming Xbox Live Community Games title 'Gum Drop Celestial Frontier'. Don't let the long and rather odd name put you off - there's some good stuff to play here.

While your ship doesn't have any lasers to take on the incoming enemies, it does have the SMASH ball, which can be swung around your ship and, well, smashed into your opponents. There's also a few other different moves which can be pulled off, and many powerups to try out. The game itself feels nicely polished and well worth a look-in.

Presumably Elbert is hoping this PC release will convince people to buy the game from XBLGC later this month. Until then, give this free version a try.

I swear that I already played a flash game like this...now it's going to bug me until I can remember what it's called...

Found it. xWUNG by cactus. There might have been others.

Installed it, and when I press start the game crashes. I'm using a 360 controller.

Any suggestions?

What video card do you have? Also did you install the XNA redist?

I have a Geforce 8500, and yes I installed the XNA distributable.

Installed, played about 13 levels, didn't like it. The game is incredibly repetitive as every level just feels like the same thing over and over. If the Xbox version is like this then I don't think it's worth buying.

I believe this is an entry into this years dream play build compo, which I also hope to be entering. I'll have to give this a try

Looks like hammerfall in space. Not a bad thing.

@Coded One: I found a bug with the 360 controller on the PC. You can use the mouse for now until I fix it. Sorry about that!

@Herasy: Thanks for trying it out. I know it is repetitive, but so is geometry wars and most other games out there. But I'm not arguing that it is repetitive.

Nice game concept, almost remembers me our 2007 game "G" ...

yep, it's always nice when a game concept keep working even after a couple of years, thanks guys to keeping G live!

Now that I see it, it really resembles StudioEvil's "G" game...
No offense to Elbert Perez, of course.

Hey no offense taken :) I remember seeing that game while developing mine and thought, that's very similar!

I believe we share the same idea of smashing stuff is more fun than shooting at it

I have a bug where the game will get stuck on loading screens, but when quiting and starting new levels.
Aside from that, I'll add Offroad Raptor Safari as another game which uses this mechanic.
