Note: Video contains flashing images which may cause photosensitive epileptic seizures.

This Something Awful GameDev Challenge IV competition entry isn't packing a lot of gameplay (only one level, tries to copy cactus a bit too much, ripped sprites etc.) but you can't beat an intro like that when it comes to cooking up a background story for your game under pressure.

Video quality is very poor and the text is hardly readable, although it doesn't matter anyway as the epilepsy-inducing Game Maker release is already available for download and play. (music by AA.Kurtz, screenshots)

So when someone rips off Cactus it's bad, but when someone rips off Cave Story it's totally acceptable. Right...

I give them props for even thinking about a game intro under the time constraints of making a game in one month. Shoot, with only a month, I'd probably rip off sprites too!

I love the flashing intro! It's so robotron!

Oh wow, I wasn't expecting to see my entry on here when having the daily gander at what's out lol. Thanks!

Regarding the Cactus thing it's funny you mention that 'cause he was actually nice enough to show me how to do the background effect I used there =) I'm a bit worried however since in some of the screenshots you have it looks like it doesn't work perfectly for everyone. There shouldn't be large masses of white, so I'll have to look into that. But yeah, there's a lot of sprites that need changing, I just ran out of time in the end and got too tired though lol. Thanks for posting about it though =)

Man this is a blast to play. The intro really sets the mood too.

The only part where I thought you copied cactus a bit too much was the use of Aaron Kurtz's "A Conversation with Mother" track for the boss fight, since it was already heard in Seizuredome.

Some Game Maker developers get their inspiration from cactus anyway, but still manage to make good games (Takishawa is Dead, for example). I've never said anything about ripping off anyone, and it's not like you didn't credit cactus in the forum thread.

Really cool storyline intro and style. Gameplay was kinda fun too. It felt pretty unique evenif we can see inspiration from Cactus.

I think I have to try it out, just because the song used in the intro video is so awesome.

Just tried it out...I know it's probably your intention, but it's very hard to differentiate between different objects in game. Plus, if I had gotten any of the powerups that shot anything green, it was very hard to see any of the enemy shots. I kind of wish it had stuck with the style used in the intro as well.

Intro is genius!

i love the glitch-remix of Pixies' cover of "In Heaven"

scratch that, it's a remix of the original
