The final build for Gary Gasko's Retro Remakes 2008 Competition entry was released today, a remake loosely based on the arcade classic Spartan X (known as Kung-Fu Master in the States). This updated version of Kung Fu 2 comes with nine playable stages, unlockable secret characters, and an online high score submission feature. (source: Retro Remakes)

Thanks for the link timw. And it looks promising - downloading it as we speak. I played many and happy hours of the original Irem game as a kid.

I'm worried, however: to what extent is the whole exercise of unofficial sequel making legal?

I'm not a big fan of the 'good old' Kung Fu, but this remake rocks!

there was a Kung Fu 2. well there was a Spartan-X 2 and this looks nothing like it. i still may play it. but the poor naming will bother me the whole time.

Yes...first place on the scoreboard. My only complaint about that character is that he can't hit enemies that are right up next to them (like when you jump towards a nice thrower), and that you have to back off, thus getting hit by everything else.

hey tim, we never reviewed that game, did we? :D

As Andy mentioned, there is a Spartan X 2 for the Famicom. Irem also made a Kung Fu Master game for the Game Boy, which is not a port but an original title.

Then there is Vigilante, Data East's Spartan X clone.

I'm looking forward to trying this out and seeing how it compares to these past iterations.

Wikipedia and MobyGames do a lot of people good, I see ;)

Wow, TifaTan X-2 actually looks really fun. May have to go download that instead of this remake :P
