The much-publicized 2D remake of Valve's Portal is now out, with links to binaries for Windows, Mac and Linux operating systems all available from the Cymon's Games site.

In ASCIIpOrtal you can fire up to two portals with your hand-held portal device, then enter through one before coming out of the other for some mind-bending teleportation effect. Some of the puzzles include manipulating switches using blocks, placing portals on the other side of chain links, dodging boulders before they crush you, and avoiding laser fields that will burn your flesh instantly on contact.

I usually shut up when I don't like a game, but usually indie games aren't hyped that much for no reason like ASCIIpOrtal.

Even the interview pretends to be more important than what it really is.
I mean, releasing your source code so others can learn from it is nice, but make it sound like you are releasing a master piece?.

Well, congrats anyway.

I don't really understand the buzz about this either. It doesn't seem to do anything different than 'Portal 2D' which came out very quickly after actual Portal. Maybe someone can explain what's different here, because I'm not seeing it in the video?

I think it looks really cool.

@'anon' thanks for linking to my interviews; much appreciated.

@Lucaz..
I'm sorry if my editing somehow gave you the idea that Joe thinks he's released a 'masterpiece'. I didn't get much of a sense of ego from him at all. He seemed genuinely surprised at the original response to the project & his desire to help others with programming seems quite sincere.

you guys i am spouting off about a game i haven't played yet

rawr rawr rawr

This is beautiful work.

@Gabe thanks for pointing this out.
I still think the game is overhyped (especially when the flash version was more enjoyable, although the programming was easier), but it is good to know that I was wrong about Joe.

@Lucaz, I'm glad I'm not the only one amazed by the reception this game has got. Whereas you're annoyed at it and can't understand it, tho, I couldn't be happier. I mean, I thought it was pretty cool when I was making it. I just never thought everyone else would agree with me.

Consequently I put a lot more work into this than an ASCII game deserves, and more than I planed to, but in the end I am pretty proud with the result. I can't wait to see the levels people make with this.

Oh, and I forgot to say, Tim, I can't tell you how good it makes me feel to be featured on your blog. I've been reading it daily for a while now and I was kinda disappointed that you didn't say anything about it back in July. Offworld, Kotaku, slashdot, yeah, those are cool I guess, but I don't really read them. TIGSource, that was cooler to me because I check on it occasionally. But nothing on indiegames.com? Why? I read them daily! Doesn't Tim like me? I like him. Oh, despair.

This time TIGSource, Kotaku, and Offworld haven't said anything, but that's okay, Indiegames noticed me.

Why am I so weird?

I usually write about games that don't get any press at all. :)

And I think ASCIIpOrtal is great. So is the Favored and Alleytris, and just about everything that you do really. (even the Saucelifter video)

And I sort of agree with Lucaz and anon about the hype. To most of the other sites, it is Portal in ACSII and 2D (hence the overabundance of press), but to the rest of us what you are able to do with limited resources is a technical achievement. And a brilliant game with clever puzzles to boot. Which is why I think the other sites will pick up on the release soon enough.

Hype is always a good thing though. It is a struggle for indie game developers to get the mainstream audience to notice them, so every mention on any site counts. :)

its hard to find fault in this game. its very enjoyable. i like the use of perspective (ive never seen something quite like it in an ascii game i might add). and it even has an enjoyable soundtrack.

i dont know where everyone has heard of this game before but this is the first ive heard of it.

joe larson: walking throught that first portal made me happy.

This game is awesome, on another note tho, @Joe, how did you put more work then it deserves? Don't say such stuff, ASCII games are really cool, there should be more of them.

@Tim: TIM! Sqweee.

Okay, breath, Joe.

...

I think your preference for the underrated is the reason why I love you...r sitenogay.

@andy: Near as I can tell I'm the first to do that perspective in 2D period, ascii or not.

@soundofsatellites: Your comment made me happy.

I was going to modify the code to rotate the aimer with mouse-wheel or q and e but I don't have the sld library or curses.h. I find the aiming to be quite cumbersome and also it means you have to press a movement key twice if you are not aiming in the direction you want to travel.

despite that it's a good game, at least from the little that I've played.

wait, what's this "perspective" everyone's talking about?!

@Tim: Ah, so it wasn't "anon" after all. Thanks to you then. :-)

@Robolee - I had a thought like that myself (mouse aiming) but I wouldn't have a clue how to implement it. Stupidly, after thinking of it, I forgot to mention it to Joe. #brain #fail.

This game is absolutely awesome.

it's odd how you could do the view through portals but not mouse aiming

@robolee: Oh, I could have done mouse aiming, I just didn't want to. I do not like mouse aiming. Don't know why, but when I see a game with mouse aim it automatically looses a few points in my mind. The only game I like with mouse aim is WiiPlay Tanks. Don't know why.

Plus, i wanted to limit the player's angled shots, see how that would effect the puzzles. So it was a design decision.

Someone knows where can I find the level editor?
I don't find any download link.

Naufr4g0>>look around the forums for a "beta map editor" thread or something like that, the editor's in there (unless there's a newer one I don't know about). that said, it's fairly easy to use a text editor (like Notepad++) to do it by hand if you use the original maps as reference.

ah, forget what I just said, here's the link to the thread.

Is it me or this game is a bit slow?
