Freeware Game Pick: Excavatorrr (Arvi Teikari)
In Excavatorrr you play as an adventurer who is searching for rare treasures in an unexplored network of caves, equipped with only a pickaxe and some starting items strewn on the floor. Maps are procedurally generated every time you start a new game, and you can only replenish items or offload treasures for cash back at the shop (press up at the entrance) on the surface.
An online high score submission feature is included, although you would need to add the game executable to your firewall exception list before your best scores can be submitted online.

gameplay is painfully slow on Wine
Posted by: nitrofurano | October 23, 2009 11:21 PM
Pretty darn neat little game. Makes me wish that it was out back in the 80s on Coleco or whatever. I only had a 2600 at the time, and I don't think it could handle this very well.
In any case, it's fun, if a bit cumbersome at times due to the item lugging you must do.
I was pretty bad at it, but watched his gameplay video:

And that helped.

stop hogging up the high scores tim!

"gameplay is painfully slow on Wine"
So? That's like saying this TV has terrible picture quality when I put this huge plastic bag over it.

@Anonymous: He was just saying it's slow on Wine. Just like someone informing others about compatibility issues like if a game didn't work for Mac or Vista or whatever. I don't think he meant any offense towards the game itself.

honestly, Every time I see a loot collecting game set in an underground environment I can only ask myself one thing.
Don't they realize that Spelunky already perfected this?
Posted by: willy626 | October 24, 2009 7:49 AM
willy626:
"a loot collecting game set in an underground environmen" is just a theme, and the overall game can be of any genre. Personally I think that Spelunky covers only one genre, and there's still a lot of ways the theme can be used without making it too 'old'.
Granted, though, at least for the controls this and Spelunky are quite alike, though I think there's still enough difference for this to be allowed. Besides, it's a compo game, so ;)

That's a very good game, like everything else from Hempuli.
Posted by: Nikica | October 24, 2009 11:05 AM
For some reson, when I start the game again, I get this powerful urge to drag the game icon onto the icon of DOSBox to run emuation. :)

This is neat. It's difficult but I like it.
The only thing that bothers me (but only slightly) is that the graphics scaling is a bit irregular. Some horizontal lines are one pixel high, while they should be two pixels high like the rest. Hempuli, if you can read this: when you use the Window Control object to enlarge everything (which I'm guessing is what you did here), the specified dimensions will include the window border and title bar as well. So if you enter 640 as the width, the actual game part of the window is a few pixels smaller, which causes said irregularities.

Forgot to mention this... in the settings you can adjust the horizontal and vertical size of the game, you can try to put the settings so that the game looks good. The resizing was meant for XP, but other OS have differently sized borders and titlebars, which causes the resize to go wrong. My apologies.
Posted by: Hempuli | October 24, 2009 6:32 PM
Ah, I hadn't looked there yet. I'll play around with that. Thanks for the reply. (I actually use XP, but with the classic Windows theme, so I guess that's why the default doesn't look right)
Posted by: Blueberry_pie | October 24, 2009 7:26 PM
It's not really my sort of game, but it seems well done and I think the music inparticular is really awesome!
Posted by: Anonymous | October 24, 2009 10:10 PM
willy626, there's room for more than one game in a genre.
Besides, I don't find Spelunky fun at all, whereas I find this game fun. It's kind of like a C64 MinerVGA.

sure this is a cave story rip off
Posted by: . | October 24, 2009 11:11 PM
Kinda reminds me of roguelikes (which is a genre i love).. The whole "Oh, you did something stupid and now you can't get to the surface? WELL THAT'S JUST TOO BAD! you're dead!" thing. I love it!
My only problem was that i believe that picking up objects should have a seperate key, so that you can actually dig downwards when standing on a single square with an item on it.
Again, I still really enjoy it! Will keep an eye out for you, Hempuli :D
Posted by: Zigs | October 25, 2009 3:03 AM
I like it, its like spelunky and motherload had a child, and this game is the retro demake of that game.
Posted by: Captain_Duck | October 25, 2009 7:38 AM
Zigs: You shouldn't be anyway able to dig downwards! That's ey bug now fixed. ;)
But yeah, using 2 keys to pick up/put down isn't the most intuitive thing ever.
Posted by: Hempuli | October 25, 2009 10:33 AM
Oh, that's a shame, I liked digging downwards xD
Sure is gonna make it even more challanging :)
Posted by: Zigs | October 25, 2009 10:44 AM
Sorry for the doublepost.
I just redownloaded the game. The dig downwards bug is indeed fix, with the exeption of when you go to the leftmost square and try to dig to the left, out of the screen. If you do this the block below you will get hit.
Just thought I'd point that out :)
Posted by: Zigs | October 25, 2009 10:58 AM
Ooh, nicely noticed! I'll do something about that and add some more features in.
Posted by: Hempuli | October 25, 2009 1:16 PM
Anyone have any good strategies for killing guys like the red flier or the green hopping guy? Because my current strategy, apparently, is to die.
Also the ladder kits are limited in number? That should make the endgame very interesting.
Posted by: Anonymous | October 25, 2009 2:22 PM
You have 5 ladder kits in total: 2 in the beginning, 3 in the shop.
The Red Dragon enemy is quite a nuisance, and I'd suggest to try to just sneak past it. However, the best ways to get rid of it are dropping a block on it, or getting the electric stunner gun. The green lizardish enemies are easy to kill with a bomb. :)
Posted by: Hempuli | October 25, 2009 2:27 PM
Double-post, sorry. I've updated the game, it has now some new features.
Posted by: Hempuli | October 25, 2009 9:11 PM
I like the new features :D
however, the bugfix introduced a new bug :s now, when standing in the before mentioned location, digging RIGHT will not work /:
Also, I found another unrelated digging bug. if you press the dig button and THEN while the animation plays holds the down button you will still be able to dig directly downwards :(
Another thing: I've ran into that Hand of M-forgot-the-name a few times now, but cant really figure what it's for. Maybe you should explain the artifacts in the help file?
Oh, and I also ran into that gigantic green guy, how on earth do you get rid of him? dynamite? He beat the shit out of me :(
I have yet to beat the game, still trying.. This is addicting :D
Posted by: Zigs | October 26, 2009 12:03 AM
Oh, dang it! I should've realized that bug! ;D I'll fix it ASAP (Gotta also start to use version numbers, seems like there's still a lot of things to update)!
Enemies drop money if you attack them while holding the hand of Midas. I didn't want to tell the functions of the relics, because I hoped they'd somehow be obvious enough.
Seems like you met with Mr. Cthulhu! Don't go near him, that'll wake him up.
thanks for the comments!
Posted by: Hempuli | October 26, 2009 7:09 AM
Yea, I like the whole discovering what what's for thing. It would just be cool to have somewhere to turn to when you're clueless x)
As for the Hand; That's great, a real score booster :D I did figure every of the other artifacts i ran into though, even that darn cursed statue ^^
Did I see 'Mr. Cthulhu' guarding a pair of batwings? or was that just my imagination?
Posted by: Zigs | October 26, 2009 8:47 AM
Ho ho ho
The best items are also the hardest to get...
Posted by: Hempuli | October 26, 2009 9:26 AM
Double-post again, sorry:
put up a blog to tell the updates. If you're interested, head to http://www.hempuli.com/blogblog/ !
Posted by: Hempuli | October 26, 2009 9:26 PM
Cool :D
Donno if you got my comment on your page, it doesnt show up, so here it is again ^^ :
I like the idea of spikes, but there should be a way to get rid of them without blowing them up, the game really is hard enough as it is :)
I also think that i found yet another bug. When you stand on the very edge of a square you will be able to reach the wall 2 squares away with your pickaxe. Something like this:
xxxxx xx
xX o xx
xx xxxxx
xx xxxxx
Where x = earth, o = you and X = the earth you're able to dig from afar
Donno if that's on purpose though :)
