IndieGames Crossword # 1
Good afternoon, Indie Games readers! I hope you are all having a pleasant weekend thus far. I've been toying with the idea of introducing a fortnightly crossword puzzle for your enjoyment, but have only just got around to giving it a go. Hopefully you can see it below! (although I'm pretty hopeless at html coding, so if you can't, please let me know)
I've tried to throw a range of cryptic and easy clues in, but every single one should make sense in some form. What I really need now is feedback from you guys. Is it too easy? Too hard? Just plain stupid? Should I not bother in the future? Any comments are welcome, just try not to hurt my feelings too much please :)
Fill the grid by clicking a line, reading the clue and entering it in the text box provided. Answers range from recently covered games to popular titles to anything else indie. Enjoy!

If you're stuck, trying looking back through some of the games Tim and I have covered recently - you may find an answer or two in those :)

Oh, and if you're still stuck, feel free to ask for extra clues either here or via Twitter (@RaveofRavendale).

I like the idea I guess but: Yeah, it's pretty hard. Got 6 so far, but gotta get back to coding now... ;-)

It's good but too hard for anyone not a member of TIGSource or seriously into the indie scene.

Four from memory, plus another five from scrolling through three pages of your tweets.

So I'm guess the general consensus is same again, but a bit easier next time? :)

Awesome!
Only one I can't get is "When Greek philosophers collide (4, 5)" - any clues?
Posted by: Terry | October 17, 2009 5:12 PM
@Terry: Think of a different word for 'collide' and stick a common Greek philosopher name on the front
Posted by: Michael Rose | October 17, 2009 5:13 PM
Well, this is a lot tougher than I though it would be...

I'll throw a few more helpful hints out there for anyone who is completely stuck:
(1) The rodent clue, the bug clue, the XBLIG game, the sprinting clue and the metal clue were all games featured recently on IndieGames, so scrolling back through should help there.
(2) The 'hothead' and 'balt of lightning' clues were both plays on words, and again have both been games featured here in the last month.
(3) The fruit clue may make sense if you consider which fruit could possibly be sad :)
That should be enough clues to keep you going for a while!

I like it being hard, it's pushing me to look around the web to figure things out. Good for finding new things.

I only got 7 without looking up anything =\.
Posted by: Jonathan DeLong | October 17, 2009 5:34 PM
I've got only 6 by myself. For another one I had a pretty good idea which game it is, but I forgot the title.

i have 6 so far, but nothing's making sense from "when greek philosopher's collide". Aristotle Punch is not the name of an indie game (unfortunately).

can't get any of these, got all the rest:
Warning: can cause a hothead and certain peril (10)
Escape like a balt of lightning (8)
••D••••••O•E•
It's completely immobile, but against all odds... (3, 3, 2, 5)
••U••E••Y•••••N
The fruit in my allotment always seems so sad (9, 6) -personally I can't tell the emotion of fruit I buy

@Anon:
(1) Try googling 'hothead' and 'indiegames' together
(2) Did you notice I spelt bolt incorrectly?
(3) It's completely immobile, And Yet...
(4) If I was feeling sad, you could say I was feeling a little...?
Hopefully that helps!

@fuzz: The second word is the key. If you get the word which connects to it, you'll find that the second word starts with a 'C'. Know any other words for collide that start with a C and are 5 letters long?

Alright, I just can't do the increpare one. Someone give me a clue, I've been through all through all their games and the only one that matches the words is Adventure Game but that's not it.

@Andrew: Try checking out the Pixel-Labs Indie Games Arcade Blog: http://pixel-lab.co.uk/indiegamesarcade/

Thanks Michael, finally done it. Might I suggest that next time you could ease the pressure on some of the more difficult words by designing it so that the the easier ones give away more useful letters. It wasn't very often that the first letter of a word was given away by another one. Just a thought.

Only five so far. One through Google.
Super-Duper-hard.
Off topic: Will you feature the LOVE Alpha on the blog?
Posted by: Erik | October 17, 2009 6:56 PM
@Andrew: Yeah I know, the layout isn't great, but unfortunately that bit is done automatically by the crossword program I used, so choosing exactly where each word goes isn't feasible :(
@Erik: I've been meaning to for a while now, but keep forgetting. Thanks for reminding me :)

This is great! I've got about 9 without doing any browsing so I'm well chuffed about that. There are some really tough ones though, but that's how I like it. Nice one Michael!

Nice one!
This RSS-Feed entry killed the popular RSS Firefox-Addon Brief
xD
I spend 1 hour of my life to find the reason why the RSS Reader does not show any Feedentrys xD

YAY, at least!!! Man, this crossword was really hard, I took more than one hour to fill everything. The hardest one was the "sad fruit" one; then I saw a "list of culinary fruits" on wikipedia and remembered the game, hehe. And I hadn't heard anything about the "balt" game; previous twitter entries from indiegames helped me on this (and only then I played the game, it's awesome!).

Nice! Just about the right amount of difficulty. I didn't have any real trouble with it, but it's kinda my job, so... yeah. I definitely wouldn't mind two of these a month. Awesome idea!

I did it! It was a little bit difficult, but it was fun, and I'm looking forward to another one. I didn't like the design of the crossword much though, it's far too sparse. A more connected one would be great.

Fun but I couldn't solve it :)
