Spotted by Mr Phil Fish, Firefly is a game controlled using a candle. As in a real candle. In your hand.

A small firefly on the screen is attracted to the glow from your candle and will follow your path - it's your job to guide him through caves, dodging obstacles and making sure not to hit the walls. I'm not 100% sure how it all works, but a bigger question springs to mind - won't this be a little dangerous? I mean, last time I checked, hot candle wax burns!

Lol I saw a thread for this on GameDev. That could turn out bad >_>

i'm guessing it uses the candle like a wii-mote sensor bar.

wow. looks interesting.

wiimote? maybe not, it produces images, probably a camera, but there will sure be some kiddos setting fire to the cam hehehhe.

From what I've heard, using candles really isn't as dangerous as your parents always tell you it is, so I think playing this game may be safe enough.

It's good to try and be innovative and all, but I see no entertainment value in this at all.

The first thing I thought of when reading the concept was "ouch, burnt hand". Candles drip like crazy when you shake them around!

I have a candle, but not a webcam.

Cool concept, it will wow everyone and be fun for a few minutes.

Maybe he's just controlling the game with the mouse, using his other hand.

And ehh holding the camera with his teeth. ;)

Substitute candle with weak torch light. Safety problem solved.

Candle burns? Really? Either you people use some strong candles with a weird wax, or some people have sensitive hands.

I had candle wax dribble on my hand quite a few times. No burns, the wax cools almost instantly. Hell, I can see why some people would find it erotic.

Well, with the gameplay itself not really being that interesting, i guess the appeal depends on how atmospheric the use of candles gets implemented. I can see how this idea could turn out great, as well as how it could be no more than a gimmick. It all depends on if one can make it more than just using a candle as a pointing-device.

Hardly innovative and extremely dull. What a pointless "game". The worst part is this doesn't even fall under the category of gimmick, it's even less interesting than that.

However, if people would kindly upload videos of themselves playing this game at home to YouTube I think there could be great entertainment value because I'd like to see how many fools melt their monitors or burn down their houses... Now that would be gimmicky, but at least it would be entertaining.

If I had two webcams I would do that. I think the game is fun, sure it's a gimmick but it's well done.

It's just a nice slow based game, still in early beta. It's not omg goty or anything, it's just fun. It needs work and according to Sos development is yet to be completed.

Stop being so harsh and cynical. Play the game before you start breaking its balls apart.

Maybe you can just use a lighter? LOL

no, a lighter doesn't work that well. or rather, a cigarette lighter doesnt. have yet to try a grill lighter. but holding down a button wouldn't be as cool as holding a candle

i have a tea light candle holder, its very light and feels like im holding an espresso mug. just holding my arm up (webcam ontop of monitor) makes the blood drain in my arm, and thus discomfort arises.

Hmmm what about a flashlight, or LED light....i would think if he coded it so the webcam would pick up any bright light source...

Reminds me of that LD contest not too long ago.

Anyway, this seems more like it'd work better as a demo or a cool concept then a game, but we'll see how it turns out.
The graphics are pretty neat looking (nice lighting, and it has that real old school "grainy low-res but tries to be realistic" look to it), and the music is also similar to that era of PC gaming.
A problem that I see is that it looks a tad frustrating (the creator was having trouble getting past the first obstacle), and although it looks like it controls fairly well, it still might have some problems (not to mention different webcams probably work in different ways).

Also, if you're worried about a little hot wax, you could just make one of those paper candle guard things, or perhaps buy some tea lights. If that doesn't work, just try a LED light.

Also, the whole candle thing does pretty much what a Wii remote can do, minus the gyro, so the whole thing can be viewed as a little gimmicky, but fun.

Yo could just buy those no drip candles, you know. Problem solved. Its almost like magic, no dripping and it just melts into nothing..not sure how it works
