Freeware Game Pick: pixelProject (Balázs Sabransky)
pixelProject is a short 2D platformer consisting of four levels to play in the public beta release. Created with Game Maker, the story is about a hero who has to collect coins for points and reach the end of a stage without losing all of his hearts. You can smash or push certain crates by running towards them, which will sometimes reveal paths to secret locations that harbour more coins to retrieve. (Windows, 3.17MB)

Fez?

In my opinion, the gameplay is nothing like Fez, nor is the style. You may as well be calling Fez a Cave Story ripoff.
Found out about this game from the creator on DeviantArt; I'm really looking forward to its completion.
Good choice Tim!

Fez.

Colors do look a lot like Fez. Still, looks really awesome and gameplay seems to be doing it's own thing.

cave story rip off

Yep, it doesn't look a whole lot like Fez. Still, "Fez?", was also my very initial reaction, for whatever reason :)
And angreed, it looks quite nice.

Separated at birth?

oh, cut that out.
if "fez?" was seriously the only thing that came to your mind, then get lost. a game is more than just its art work/design, and if you can't somehow get your mind past that, then you're obviously in some sort of immature mindset that no amount of reason will get you out of.
for the love of christ, let's get this community past "this looks like _____" and try to focus on the individual characteristics that make each of these games unique rather than the characteristics that make them all feel the same.

Ripoff my ass, I wish there was a way to shoot every worthless parasite that cries ripoff on game designers, I'll be an extra happy man.
You guys are idiots that don't add anything worthwhile to the indie scene. I hope you all die.

I was going to post that same exact picture From Fez.
Sure they play differently, but give me a break. Don't you think the creator could have tried making scenery and a main character who don't look identical to the most anticipated indie game? That's a little lame in my opinion.

The game does look different in the gameplay video. Still, if he makes a game that, in screenshots, look exactly like Fez, people are allowed to lay the connection, right? Otherwise, it's like screaming someone's a bloody idiot for being reminded of Castlevania when he hears of a game about a vampire killer with a whip, called Simon Belnont, because CLEARLY it's a different game, as the names of the main characters are nothing at all alike. If it looks bloody similar, it looks bloody similar.

So it's Fez's Underside?

Looks really cute, can't wait to play it oh and I agree with MisterX and Mr. Podunkian. I hope it gets more than 4 levels.

LOL @ the "defender" of this game's integrity. No one said anything about that game being a Fez ripoff, someone commented "Fez?" for a screen that would remind anyone of Fez.
I'm not sure what exactly need defending, or why POINTING OUT THE OBVIOUS makes anyone a bad indie fan.
Get off your high horses people, no one said anything offensive.

Don't you guys mean 'Fedge'?

It's sad that what appears to be a very talented developer chose to make yet another platformer. After watching the video there were a number of things which struck me as well done but overall the gameplay seemed to be boring -- who wants to go and collect all those stupid coins?
Posted by: Alex Schearer | November 16, 2009 9:37 PM
Actually, Fez has more of a pill shaped head than this guy. It looks more like a Lazy Muffin character to me. Still looks fun.
Posted by: MacDiver | November 16, 2009 9:38 PM
It's a fine game. It's a fairly straightforward platformer, which is nice, collecting the coins is optional, and it has some puzzle elements.
I didn't like getting stuck when I didn't do a puzzle right. The jumping seems off (you always jump a fixed height no matter how long you hold the button).
As for it looking like Fez. I see blocky terrain and a white dude. The similarities are in overall composition, but not in any of the details. Put a screenshot of Mario 2 next to a picture of Fez and you'll see blocks, pots, and ladders.

Wow, I didn't mean to cause such a ruckus.
- My intentions with the comment were not to be derogatory, however, looking at it now I see how it is very easily seen as such.

Fez is vaporware. This is real.

Anyone would think that pixel art was the sole intellectual property of Polytron Incorporated.
This looks like a well-realised platformer with nice art. Good work.
Posted by: Alex May | November 17, 2009 10:54 AM
I should say that yea it does look like Fez, but so what? Important part is that I found this game boring and not encouraging a player to play, while I hoped for a fun platformer...
Posted by: ori | November 17, 2009 12:12 PM
Nobody said it's a bad thing that it looks like Fez. Nobody said it's a good thing, either. It's a remark, a statement of fact. Those that whine 'bout us saying it looks like Fez needing to be more positive or to stop bitching or whatever are the ones that see something bad in it.

it also has certain similarities to Sereneworx's Cafe - note the main character's hand, a subtle but emphasised feature in the main character of both.
I must say, what there is is actually quite good for a tech demo, with some nice animation. Hopefully the full version will be a touch more refined.

they're all ripoffs of mario!!! dammit!

ungabunga
Don't know if anyone still read this. :/
First, thanks for the pick.
I'm glad some people like the game.
but...
FEZ?
no
Sorry guys. I see, anyone can easily think i just saw FEZ, loved it, and ripoff it.
Not FEZ's character or my carachter or Sereneworx's Cafe's carachter are the only white carachters in the video game history, and there are tons of 2D platformer games with blocks.
I use more intensive colors in the game, like pink, and my art style is way different.
The only similar thing about the two game's gameplay is: both are platformer.
I make games for 3-4 years, but I've never red blogs like this.
I didn't even know FEZ till someone wrote a comment on my devArt.
http://sabydesign.deviantart.com/art/new-screenshot-02-140925702
Yeah, I know that prove nothing, but i can't say anything else about this.
___________
The game comes out next year. That is just a preview. It doesn't even have story yet. yet
Anyway, this is an interesting blog. :D
Special thanks cactus for the comment. I really like your games dude. :)
You opinion is very important for me.
BAD ENGLISH SORRY

Just a word -that might have been said already - to the non-haters :
Ok, the game doesn't play like Fez, but it DOES look alike. Let's not talk about rip off or other negative judgement, however, that's a pity to see indy devs bein so uninspired.
The "official" industry is already taking care of the non-original market, so let's try to do something else.
There's nothing wrong in saying that a project is not looking very original, it's actually less criminial than praising a game's art style/game design for the sole argument it's been made by indy guys. Remember Robert Pelloni? He tried to build momentum only upon the fact he did his game by himself, but the players don't care about that.
So, whoever made this project, kudos for actually MAKING something, but try a little harder on the art style side.
