The Black Heart is a versus fighting game which took Argentine developer Andrés Borghi seven years to create using Elecbyte's M.U.G.E.N. engine. There are six playable characters to choose from, each with their own set of special moves that can be executed using simple key press combinations. In addition to the basic attacks, players can also charge up their energy gauge and perform a powerful fatal move to finish a duel in style.

The game also features a couple of gameplay modes separate from the main story campaign, with support for hotseat multiplayer also included.

Y,know,I thought I'd picked a bad week to stop sniffing glue, but this game is my new addiction.

holy cow.
Beating the game on hard using Story mode gives you codes to unlock the final boss( I think all of them are required?)
Beating the game on normal using team mode gives you passwords to unlock itens on a gallery, music included.

Wow!
Well done, Borghi, well done. :)

This is one wonderful piece of work.

WOW!

This is the best free game I've ever seen on this blog. If the developer happens to read this: kudos to you for making an outstanding game!

thanks a lot to all of you! :)

I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE that giant worm monster! its cool to see a non-humanoid monster in a fighting game, it looks like something right out of an HP lovecraft story :D

overall though, this game rules..best fighter since mortal kombat IMO.

Very nice game indeed. I would love to see more character, but those who are in are very well done! I also love the overall spooky atmosphere of the stages.

Like others said before, WOWOWOWOWOW! This game is incredible! The best freeware fighting game I've ever played, it really has a professional quality. Congrats, Andres.

One of the best game free game ever. I love the atmosphere and the characterization of every asptect. I really like the combo system! Congrats :)

Congrats Andre Borghi! It is really obvious that you have put a lot of effort in this. I am a huge fan of beat 'em ups and the black heart is as good as any commercial one. I definitely love this. Again, congrats a thousand times!

I must admit, I was first put off by the graphics - the drawing seemed far too amateurish for my taste. But then, the game itself packs quite some quality. Reminds me of what "Thrill Kill" once wanted to be.

It was the same for me. Judging from the trailer, I didn't like the graphics and thought the characters looked a bit too silly. But, now that I've played it, I'm actually impressed by how detailed and varied the characters are, and the atmosphere is much darker than one might think, thanks to the sound, backgrounds and morbid design in general.

I'm not even a great fan of beat 'em ups, but this is really well done!

This is impressive. But.. not to be rude, did this really take seven years? It seems all the developer did was develop a handful of mugen characters, stages, and screenpacks. It doesn't seem like anything that regular mugen developers don't do normally.

they usually dont draw everything from scratch and use sprites from already existing companies, amidst work, school, and other day to day things, to compose the music, to record the whole voice acting, treat the fx, draw every frame ... all those things take way longer when you are alone.

Borghi posted that creating a completely new character from scratch would be about half a year of work. So, that would be 3 years for the characters alone, but maybe that's only the case now and when he made the game he was still learning it. Maybe he had long pauses, maybe he was more busy, and then there is a lot more to it, as the last poster said.

"This is impressive. But.. not to be rude, did this really take seven years?"

Have you played the game? It's a mini-japanese-horror-cinematic-fight-fest, not one your standard MUGEN sprite-ripped generic mash-fests.

The character sprites may look a bit ms-paintish when you first look at it, but once you start playing there's so much quality there.

Presumably the creator has a day-job, family etc.
To make a fighting game that isn't clunky and awkward is not a small feat, to make one that's imaginative and cinematic (even with the not-so-detailed sprites) containing over 6 playable characters is a great accomplishment.
Well done!

Awesome game

OMG! OMG! OMG! It's absolutely freaking incredible game! I love Noroko much, and Peketo 2nd. You must play this game 10/10 !!!

Hey all. To those wondering about the length of development, I've been following MUGEN for awhile. Originally these characters were released as-is a long time ago and it was apparently the author wasn't going for a complete game. Eventually, he touched up everything and made a full fledged game - hence the length of development. It was long, drawn out, and without aim until recently.

As for the game quality, not much to say that hasn't been said already. Deceptively simple graphics that come together perfectly and create an awesome experience.

I have to say the graphics are some of the best I've seen. They seem simple at first glance but after playing the game you realise that it's the art direction he has gone for. The characters are extremely well animated the quality has to be played to be believed. Supremely well put together and I couldn't even tell that this was on Mugen now this is how a Mugen game should be put together.
