Freeware Game Pick: Saut (Mabi Games)
Look out Canabalt, you've got a contender for 'Most Awesome One-Button Game of the Year'. Created for the Gamejolt Minimal Contest, Saut is a dark platformer in which you need to tactically time your jumps so as not to end up down one of the many pits - using only one button, of course. Oh, and it's amazing fun.
Graphically it reminded me a lot of Boss Baddie's Lunnye Devitsy - there's a lovely atmosphere about it all, especially helped along by the great soundtrack. My advice would be to only watch the first 30 seconds of the above video to get a feel for what Saut is about, then give it a try. Ortoslon created the above playthrough, and he is stupidly good at it.
Downloadable from Gamejolt, where you can also 'Quick Play' the game too straight from the browser.

I found the controls to be infuriating.

why, oh why does the camera bob up and down with every jump? it's pretty distracting/nauseating.
Posted by: raigan | December 2, 2009 1:19 PM
Definitely not as good as canabalt. First, the controls are too unforgiving for the first sections, after failing 20 times in the first level, I give up. Also, like raigan said, why o why did the developer not implement some kind of camera smoothing?
Canabalt showed a one-button game can be very entertaining, but this game definitely falls short, compared to Canabalt.

I enjoyed the idea, but it felt like there was a slight delay between when space was pressed and when the jump would happen. or that the jump couldn't be initiated upon landing.

Sorry, not as good as Canabalt.
Also Flash > Game Maker, if only because Flash is multiplatform, and games made with newer versions of Game Maker can't do proper fullscreen under Wine.
Of course, SDL & OpenGL >>>>>>> Flash, any day :)

I think it's probably good to note that this game was made within one week (the Game Jolt Minimal Contest was just one week long), whereas Canabalt had a whole month to develop into the polished game that it is.
In view of that fact, I think Saut is quite a gem. :)

I'm probably the only one that thinks this, but I actually enjoy this game a bit more than Canabalt. It's freakin' hard at first, and the beginning levels are actually harder than the later ones, but once you get the feel for the motion of it, it becomes really enjoyable.
Really liked the different scenery/levels, and the musics rocked. I had no problem with the camera following the player exactly. GM games do seem to run slowly/laggy for me, though, which happened with this game. That was my biggest annoyance, the lag, since the whole game relies on rythm.

I really liked this game and I didn't have any problems with the controls, although it would've been nice to be able to use a different key to jump than the spacebar.
I loved the levels with lots of sliding around and double-jumping. Quite satisfying!
All in all, good stuff.
- Played once (to completion)
- Died 25 times
- Collected 15/16 coins

Canabalt was actually made in under a week.

i felt that you char slip from the corners, this is shit... or maybe its just me

I thought it was a fun game, but I did have issue with the difficulty curve.
There was very little lead up to just spam deaths in the early levels.

After playing through the entire thing, I think the issue was level order.
Second Stage is much easier a better place to learn timing.
The other thing to keep in mind is that lost momentum is really bad and can screw you over. If you are having difficulty try going a little faster, it gets easier.
I like that this was posted just after the Kokoromi competition. It helps give a little inspiration.

Thanks for the feedbacks everyone. I will fix the camera in next version. Sorry about the lag problems, it doesn't occur on my computer.
Ntero:
I actually regret the Gamejolt contest now that I saw Kokoromi. I wish I made it for that instead and spend 2 months on it.
Also, I agree the difficulty curve is a bit broken. Worlds should be switched and there was supposed to be introduction levels but I ran out of time.

In that case I hope to see Saut 2 in two months :P
It's not already released if it's a sequel. And it'd be a strong competitor.

Really?
I'm the only one that can't play the game? It just sits on a black screen and nothing happens after the minimal screen.

After getting used to the jumping, it's actually quite enjoyable
Posted by: Zupponn | December 3, 2009 6:11 AM
Sorry if I was too negative, it has a good style and the movement feels nice; I think that showing more of the screen to the right (letting the player plan more), making the camera ignore jumping movement, and maybe letting players use any key (my spacebar is huge and sloppy) would be my top three wishes.

Another question, any way to get either music credits or a way to download the music?
I enjoy them, especially the green levels music.

Ranked #1 on the leader bored wohooo awesome game guys

coreymill: Sorry about the black screen. It happened to a few people and I can't fix it.
raigan: i will fix the camera and jump key in the next version. Thx for feedback.
Ntero: I took the music from Tomlameche, Greg Baumont and Manuzik. I suggest you google the Tomlameche blog.

Hi Kapser, I thought the game was great and after 302 deaths I finished it. Nearly vomited after looking at the leaderboard! There's me thinking I was pretty decent at platformers...
Posted by: Gregg B | December 4, 2009 5:27 PM
People had trouble with the "controls?" There is only one control, and it's easy to press.
Kidding. On occasion, the game did not feel like responding to my press of the spacebar either.

KaitoKid: Nice job with the 0 death score :D
Gregg B : I'm glad you reach the end even though it's hard as hell. It's
actually easier than the usual platformers once you understand the tricks.(see Kaito's score)
Valzi : The game will be revamped, and it should have less bugs.

Finally got a highscore on the VIP leaderboard =O. Really impressed with the chill style and varied level design. I'm hoping there will be a longer second iteration.
