As Russ Morris' Starlings draws closer to a release, he's thrown out the above trailer to give the intrigued a better idea of what it's about. In development for Mac OS X, it's like thatgamecompany's Flower, but with less flora and more feathers.

"The high-concept of Starlings is a game that attempts to create an emotional connection between the player and game through dynamic audio and visuals. Beginning with one starling, the player must explore an expansive rural environment in order to recruit more birds to their flock. As the flock size increases, so do the accompanying musical score. More instruments are introduced to an initial basic melody, directly relating to the current size of the flock."

Coming 2010!

It's a shame it basically -is- flower.

^ Flower is inspiring and relaxing. It doesn't look like a muddy mess. That trailer doesn't do anything for me visually or emotionally. I hope the GAME does though.

he's making this in Unity but not offering a windows build?

oh well, just turn on my ps3 and play flower :P

@Xeno
yea, I guess you're right.

What I meant was, it's simply a poor clone.

:(
Normally I'd be all over an OSX game, but not one that I already own on my PS3, and is vastly better.

Even if it is a Flower clone with birds instead of flowers it looks interesting.

Hope he polishes it good enough to run smoothly... and a windows build is a must with unity.

Hi guys (and girls?)

I understand that the similarities between Starlings and Flower are quite obvious, and really appreciate your comments.

I do believe that both games can co-exists, and that each will offer something different and worthwhile...how many FPSs and RPGs are out there?

Also, in terms of the 'muddy mess' comment, this trailer is from the prototype build, but it is a very valid comment, I'll take it on board. hopefully next time you see the game you want think it as muddy, but more colourful...like flower :)

"he's making this in Unity but not offering a windows build?"
+1

Initially this was a Mac only game...I didn't think that people would necessarily want to play it that much to demand a windows build..

but hey, if you want it in Windows, it'll be in Windows... if you also want to do some testing on it..that would be great, give me an email

Emotional connection indeed ...

I'm a little discouraged by how static everything but the birds look.

I didn't think flower when I saw the game, though.

There is a fine line between being inspired by something and just straight ripping something off. This game seems to cross that line quite badly.

If the game mechanics had been the only similarity then maybe OK, but this seems to copy too much obvious stuff (wind turbines? they hardly feature in alot of games now do they?) If you are aware you are making a product that will be compared heavily to another, then make damn sure you have some definite differences you can point to, rather than just using the "can't we all just get-along?"/"co-existence" argument.

@ Hugh Mann

All fair points, the main issue does seem to be focussed on the similarities between my projects and Flower, which again is fair, however, I do feel that such black and white judgment should be reserved for when the game is actually played though. This trailer is based on the prototype build, it serves to give an impression of how the game will look and feel. I should probably have done a better job of getting that across.

I do really appreciate your comments though, keep them coming. Each one that raises a concern only inspires me to get as much into the next trailer, which will accompany a demo, early in the new year.

Sound a lot like "Hoppípolla" from Sigur Rós

It did make me think of Flower (keep in mind I've never actually played Flower).
I would also agree that the graphics look a little muddy.

@ Russ
It's great to see a developer come on and respond to comments!

@ Stephane

It's actually "Samskeyti" by Sigur Rós. You were close, though! I definitely agree with the similarities to flower and the muddy look, but I'm excited to see how it turns out.

A strange idea but something I'm sure people will enjoy. I could see this being a hit on the Nintendo Wii.

Hmm. If you're gonna blatantly rip off another title, at least try to improve on it somehow... Put some boobs on the windmills or something.
