Freeware Game Pick: Flood the Chamber (Matt Scorah)
![]()
Picture the scene - a mad scientist throws Dot Zo Games' Journey to the Center of the Earth and Terry Cavanagh's VVVVVV into his incredible game-splicing machine, and after it chugs away for a few hours suddenly the contraption grinds to a halt, the dust settles, and Flood the Chamber spews out of the other end. And they said he was crazy.
It's precision platforming time, folks, with a time limit no less. Your job is to help the prisoner escape the chamber, reaching the top of the screen before the advancing water level reaches our agile rogue. A warning: you will not complete this on your first attempt. Or your second. Or your... well, let's put it another way - if you manage to complete Flood the Chamber, you have some serious skills. Get to it.

Without the rising water it would be quite fun for me. But like this, nope, too cruel, not my cup of tea.
Of course it's a nice feature. But, "easy mode", maybe?

Just gave it a shoot, and completed it, really nice game. At first i didn't se my character! :)

dear god, this is infuriating!
I will play more later.

I beat it on my second try! Yay! =]
Yes, I've been playing a lot of plataformers lately...
Posted by: Cerv | January 21, 2010 6:04 PM
Yay, beat it on the first try. :)

@And: Either you are a FILTHY LIAR or a PLATFORMING GOD

doesnt seem to work properly for me, I press "space" to begin and nothing happens, no matter how long I wait :/
Posted by: Anonymous | January 21, 2010 7:39 PM
@Anon: Try clicking in the game window first

I quit after drowning twice. The rapid-fire traps and quickly flooding water just made it too difficult. Being able to get to the next checkpoint did not feel as rewarding as I was always two steps away from drowning and thus two steps away from having to start over from the begining. It sucked out all of the fun for me, but I guess I am not the target audience.

@M Rose,
I tried that.
Posted by: Anonymous | January 21, 2010 8:20 PM
Woo, beat it on the first try (barely)!
The jumping was probably the most difficult part, but once you get used to it (and figure out that tapping the opposite direction of your jump stops you completely), it's easy.

That, or I'm just good at performers. Not bad overall.
Also, what exactly does this have to do with VVVVVV?
Posted by: Bob | January 21, 2010 8:45 PM
Yeah, I beat it on the second try too. It's not really all that difficult. The water level is quite forgiving.
Posted by: Bob | January 21, 2010 8:52 PM
@Bob: Death, respawn, death, respawn, death, respawn, death, respawn, death, respawn, death, respawn, death, respawn, death, respawn, death, respawn, death, respawn, death, respawn

Well this was not as hard as promised. ._. Quite the fun xD Completed it on the second try, the first time I fell in the first waterpit xD

Haha, and Santa Clause exists, i just saw him walking on the street, wearing the legendary Monica Lewinsky's blue dress ;)
Posted by: Level42 | January 21, 2010 9:41 PM
I think this is more like "Journey to the Center of the Earth" combined with "And everything started to fall"...
Posted by: raigan | January 21, 2010 10:19 PM
phew.. beat it. Hats off to all you peeps who beat it in less than three. It took me about six :P

For me this game suffers from massive slowdown (Windows Vista), which is probably the only reason I could complete it on my first try.
Posted by: ITA84 | January 22, 2010 1:03 PM
@ITA84:
Plays at a normal rate for me on Vista64, so it should be something else.

Just so anon knows they are not alone. The game does not work for me either.
The audio seems to suggest that the game is working, but I can't see it. The screen just freezes at whatever point before or after the cutscene that I press space.
Posted by: corey | January 22, 2010 8:23 PM
@Corey,
thanks, and yes that is EXACTLY what happen to me. Word for word!
shame as this game looks like an amazing piece of work too :/
Posted by: Anonymous | January 22, 2010 9:07 PM
Same here, I am using a Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT, maybe that could be a reason.
Posted by: Anonymous | January 22, 2010 10:36 PM
Hi guys. Thanks a lot for the kind words and the feature. As for the bug that anon's being getting, I can't replicate it and I don't have any ideas as to what would cause it :P Sorry!
Posted by: scoz | January 22, 2010 10:51 PM
HOLY SUGAR - COATED JESUS what a hard infuriating game. i didnt think games could get harder than Meat Boy :D
Posted by: rgfdgdfgdtf | January 23, 2010 1:47 AM
(I couldn't find a "more official" page, seeing the comments it's probably OK to mention it here.)
Same bug here, Nvidia GeForce 7600 GS, Win XP. Intro goes through (escape from the cell, till help screen), but after pressing space the screen stays the same (help) although the sounds afterward suggest gameplay.
Posted by: Tom | January 23, 2010 10:13 AM
I get the same visual bug, image freezes and the game seems to work, like if I press jump I hear the jump sound. I have nvidea on my desk pc, but I also tried on my laptop, same problems...sad, the game looks a challenge!

This is an example of a good idea with good execution but not enough polish or restraint on the level design.
Some parts of the game like the rapid file traps or pits designed to make you die and restart even if the water level is lower aren't challenging, they're just mean.
I don't really see how the water makes the game any better. It's just a glorified timer.

This game is pretty awesome. What I love is that its difficult and challenging without it being a repetitive, frustrating trial-and-error, like I Wanna Be The Guy. I found the whole thing enjoyable. Though I can see why some people got angered at it, they must not have 20 years of platforming experience under their belts, haha.

Hi, im the original Anon (I really need to think of a username, sorry!) but yes my computer is Nvidia with Win XP also.
Hope you can fix this bug - because from what iv seen this looks like a really awesome game, I appreciate your hard work and effort nonetheless!
Posted by: Anonymous | January 24, 2010 9:09 PM
@anon
I'm not very smart programming-wise (it's only my second game), from what I've heard the Nvidia bug is something to do with GM itself. I've also heard from a Windows 7 user that GM games can lag on 7 and Vista regardless of the performance of the machine. I really can't optimize it anymore, so I'm very sorry :(
Posted by: scoz | January 24, 2010 11:01 PM
To be honest, I didn't think it was too difficult. I finished it on my second try. I think the difficulty was challenging, but not infuriating. I'd definitely play more.

Everyone who has problems with running this game (including the NVidia display issue) can try this solution (thanks to JW for finding it):
You have to have Windows Media Player associated with the MP3 format. Having another media player like Media Player Classic associated with MP3s will not solve this problem.
Open Windows Media Player, and go to Tools > Options > File Types > and check MP3 Audio File (mp3).
For Windows Media Player 11, you'll probably have to place the cursor over the media player after opening it, and press Ctrl-M to make the top menu visible before you can go to Tools > Options > etc.

This tip will solve the problem with all other GM games that displays the 'unexpected error' messages when running.

3rd try. 3RD TRY. It took me 3 tries to make it. Try IWBTG, then come back. This'll seem like a breeze
