TowerClimb is a procedurally-generated 2D platformer created for Game Jolt's Rogue Contest, in which you play as a random explorer trying to reach the highest point of an endless tower. There is only one action button to use in addition to standard character movement controls, but when holding the X key down you can jump off platforms, scale walls and even climb ceilings.

Besides the items that you carry in your inventory, you can also trade orange berries with shady merchants for more equipment to use. Purple berries bestow the power to double jump, but try not to consume too much or you'll have a rather upset stomach to contend with. Download the game here. (Windows, 18.4MB)

This game has already generated 2 unbeatable levels for me. One I could only push a block in front of the exit. The second, all walls were 2 grid squares above me (making it so I couldn't jump on the side of them).

Okay, the game has generated the following situation so many times, now: right at the starting door, all blocks are at least 3 spaces above me, so I can jump and barely grab on to the bottom of them. Unfortunately, I can't climb on the sides (I can't jump high enough), so I'm immediately stuck. Is there some trick to get around this that I'm not aware of?

Have you guys tried to access the inventory yet? (press W)

Oh, hey. They give you items at the start. That helps.

Yeah, a lot of it is about using your potions and being smart about it. Also, you start learning little things about the game, like you can stack jumping potions, so you can technically air jump two or three times in a row.

The game crash when I press X :(

This one reminds me a lot of Spelunky. There have been some impossible situations, but I love the randomized stuff, like the rising lava!

I'd like to see the game become less dependent on buying double jump potions all the time. You never seem to run across berries when you need them, and the game punishes you if you try to save too many. Also, I'd like if the lava moved a bit slower...anytime one of those levels comes up I can never make it to the exit in time.

Game seems pretty balanced, actually. A lot like Spelunky, where you can waste items doing trick (but possible) jumps, or you can use the item just to be safe. I don't think the lava moves too fast, though. One jump potion, and you get pretty far ahead of it.

My record right now is 1264 ft. It's nice that the tile sets, enemies, and traps change as you go up.

Does anybody know of any similar games to this one? I quite like the idea of TowerClimb, but the execution is lacking IMHO.

The enemies, for example, are an annoying contrivance, and I don't like the fact that the game occasionally generates unbeatable levels.

I just talked to Davio, and he said this is only the beginning. He had to release it to meet the deadline for the contest, but he said it was only the beginning of what he wants to implement.

Sounds good. With some tweaks this could be a real classic

Looking forward to the "finalized" version.

I can't play this version much because I keep finding myself stuck in 3 height jumps with no items left nor berries in reach.

Looks very Spelunky ish. I can't wait to download and try it (though I'm not a huge fan of randomly generated levels).

It's very similar to Spelunky for me, too. :)
But this is a good thing.
I can't wait for the complete version. Anyway I have a lot of fun also in this beta version. :)
Great work!

"I can't play this version much because I keep finding myself stuck in 3 height jumps with no items left nor berries in reach."

You're definitely playing it wrong if this happens to you often. This hasn't happened to me ever. Figure out which jumps actually need the items and the ones that don't.

I can't wait to check out the final release.

Darn, 3 feet away from 1337
:/
This could turn out really really good if it was just a wee bit more fin tuned.

new record: 2544 ft. The game starts looping the last area beyond this point D: The mixture of water-filled level + gas from the top of the level killed me. Those stupid fish get a little tricky to dodge when you have to stall for time!

Hey bob, awesome score! Yea, the game loops beyond area 3, I had no time to make more areas before the deadline. Don't worry though, the game will have many more areas in future versions, global highscores are also in the works. :)

This is what i've been waiting for! Finnaly some more randomized platforming to sink my teeth in. A did a couple of runs and got to 1590 ft. Very nice, i had some very tricky situations but you can do some beautiful stuff with the climbing.

It would be nice if it had some sort of goal other then highscores though. What i liked about spelunky is that it's a beatable game, theres tons of randomized levels but there is an end boss and an ending.

Basicly i just want to be able to say that i beat this game at one point. The best you could do now is get a highscore which would inevitably be broken.

Error! Ideas?

I really like 'realistic platformers', a genre that is populated by what, one, two games?
The jumping perhaps appears exaggerated in this game, but the scale compensates for that, and it feels nice and weighty. I love crawling up walls.
Any know of any others?

@Raphael and @Anonymous: There's been a couple of indie platformers that involves crawling up or clinging on walls. I'd suggest you start with Saintrooper and take it from there.

I got to 500 then i died from eating to many blue berries? What an intelligent design choice...

But other then that, it's a decent game that could evolve into something great.

Also, i didn't understand that i could use potions and climb the walls at first.

Tried it again, game randomly chrashes when entering a new level. Looking forward to new versions of the game, but right now it's not worth playing.

"Tried it again, game randomly chrashes when entering a new level. Looking forward to new versions of the game, but right now it's not worth playing."

"Not worth playing" and "unplayable on my hardware" are two different things.

Very slick game.

It would be nice if the keys could be re-configured though, the 3 potion buttons are a little further from X than I would like them. No biggie though.

The game is great, got to 1317 and was torn apart. I didn't see that one coming(the fishes), but it was cool in the water. I hope to see a new version soon.

Great game. As far as berry death goes, I feel that the "...but you feel nauseated" should tip off the prudent adventurer. Honestly, anything that grants that kind of performance boost is sure to have some side-effects.

I do think that the gas+water situation is maybe a little too brutal? That's just been my experience. I've only come across gas during water levels, and I've died all four times. Diving back into the water full of those fish is kinda crazy.

On 3 different computers, the game crashes very often after I die and sometimes after I finish a level. May it be due to a newer DirectX version than the game demands?

What are you supposed to do when the gas comes? I just jumped down and ended up falling to my death because I panicked. Is there any way to win the gas levels?

Anonymous: In gas level, you have to climb/jump down till you reach about 1/3 of height of the level, the gas disappears then and you can return to the top.

(There is also a little bug (?) causing a "double jump" to be used when you have the ability activated and you perform a jump starting right on the edge of a platform.)

this is the most boring game i have ever played. usually i play fifa10 and nba10 but this no! no!

be serious

my rating is negative 10 .please do something this is non standard.this is a waste of time playing such a game

No! No! No! try again. my rating is ZERO
