Version 0.05 of Rodain Joubert's puzzle-roguelike game Desktop Dungeons was released today, with the addition of new character races, classes and dungeons being the first thing that most players will notice upon starting a brand new quest. Anything that you've unlocked in the previous version can be carried over to this new release by simply copying the old character files from one folder to another.

There are brand new character graphics and tiles for each individual dungeons as well, while the mouseover text is definitely a welcome addition. Glyphs are now converted to bonuses by dragging them to the convert icon, and spellcasting is easier with the implementation of keyboard shortcuts. Basic custom tileset support is already included with this build, and editing them is just a matter of replacing the old graphics with new ones. Still Windows only.

Well, there goes my afternoon...

It crashed when I was a monk in the snake pit. Attack was 1, so health got down with each hit from one of those "weaken hero" enemies. It crashed when I was attacked by one of those when I had 1/1 HP. Got this error:

for object Roomwatch:

Error in code at line 318:

i defeated the boss on normal with human fighter

and now on every startup it says

AWESOME! I love this game to bits!

Thanks for the bug reports, these are being fixed ASAP. Hope this version of the game is still reasonably playable for folks. :)

Very addictive. I cannot beat the bosses though, it's driving me nuts. I don't even have a problem getting to them anymore, I even managed to save every potion I got and I still couldn't beat Frank!

The bosses are mainly based on luck, plus not making a stupid choice in character selection. That and some strategy in making your decisions (aka: don't be daft!). I'd say every 10 runs, there'll be 1 where you can actually beat the boss. Some runs, it's even impossible to get to lvl. 2 (nothing but high-level monsters around you, blocking all pathways). To me, all that's part of the charm of the game.

Now if only it could take my savegame from the previous version -- which I finished with all classes. Took me about a week, so good god how long'll it take me this time :D

There's a new version up at the original link that fixes the bugs in earlier comments (and more).

@Anonymous: Veteran players have a much higher boss win ratio than 1 in 10. In the previous version we had a ton of players that wouldn't use potions during ranked dungeons at all and still regularly take down bosses.

P.S. You can totally transfer your saved game from 0.04 across to 0.05, just copy the charactername.dat file into the same directory. The game will convert it for you :)

Damn! If only I knew that this morning! Spent half the day getting there again, and finished standard dungeon with all tier 1-3 classes, plus Snakepit once with a tier 1 class. It did go alot faster this time than last time, although I do still frequently find myself starting out, surrounded by high-level monsters and no summon or warp spell around.

Also, one thing that makes this version harder, is that the eye spell recovers your opponent as well. In the previous version, it healed only you.

starting to get the hang of it now, beat the first boss. Still hard as heck though, but great nonetheless.

god this game is so addictive. Now if I could only know how to beat snake pit with monk. Stupid weaken makes it impossible, so I search the entire map for low level gorgon's until I reveal all the spaces and have no regen left. Frustrating.
But still fun.
Just really frustrating.

Seems really unbalanced. Barbarian took me like a thousand play throughs to do, but all the holy ones only took like 3.

@Anonymous: Lemmisi always regenerated enemies as well, that hasn't changed.

@Nero: We've had players say exactly the oppostie: Barbarian was incredibly easy and Monk and co were really hard ;) Nice to hear about different play styles.

Another bug:

If you got a character with 3 glyph slots and you buy the item that gives you a 4th, the 4th won't appear. You'll fill it up when you pick a glyph, but you can't click it or convert it to whatever your race converts it to.

PS: I want my money back for that item!

I got a negative amount of XP. Fought a lvl. 4 zombie in the crypt using my lvl. 4 human paladin. When I beat him, I had -1 I think XP. It just keeps getting lower and lower, and I can't lvl. up anymore because of this.

Oh, screw this! I keep getting negative XP in the crypt all the time!

This is a bug with the Paladin if your HP falls below 0 during a battle with an Undead but you are saved by the health regeneration from killing the Undead rather than from Death Protection.

This happened more often during 0.05 since you were still allowed a final hit on your dying blow, but in 0.051, this is no longer possible: only Crusaders get final hits now. However, you can still get a final hit if you have Death Protection, so the bug can still occur. If you are saved from death via this health regen, then you will be unable to gain any more levels.

I suspect it may also occur with Life Steal and other methods of regaining HP on kills, but I've not tested them all.

===

And while we're on the subject of bugs, Poison is only cleared when you attack an enemy that doesn't have Poison. This means that if you Poison two enemies, you are allowed to attack both of them without Poison being lost.

Also, I would have liked the option to disable the regen graphics when you explore new tiles: the red and blue sparkles tend to obstruct my view. They look nice and make the game look more polished, but I definitely would like to be able to turn them off.

===

All this said, it's still a fantastic game... though I'm honestly finding the Crypt to be a harder map than the Factory (and Bloodmage in the Factory seemed to be a harder challenge than Wizard in the Factory -- took me far longer to get a successful run with it).

Oh, right, if you do fall foul of the Paladin bug, you can still gain levels if you use up your Death Protection. Which is slightly inconvenient, but it's at least not difficult to do.

Excellent game.
But PLEASE remove the feature that when pressing ESC the game immediately closes :(

Bug ?

- I was Human Barb, level 4, Damage=28

- My opponent was a Wraith level 6, -30% Physical Resist, 53/53 Health.

- I had +30% damage because of the level difference (Barb)

I thought the +30 and -30% would cancel each other out.

2 attacks = 2*28 Damage, I thought it would kill the Wraith. But no, after 2 attacks it was at 7/53.

Not a bug.

If you hold your mouse over your attack, you can see how your damage is calculated. In your case, your base damage was likely 20 (usual base damage for a L4 character), and you had a +40% bonus from converting glyphs and picking up powerups, leading to 28 damage. The +30% bonus would push that to 20 + 70% = 34. The Wraith's -30% damage means that it takes 70% damage from any attack, so 34 * 0.7 = 23. So 2 hits of 23 damage would do 46 damage, which would leave the Wraith with 7 HP left.

Bug or intended feature ?
I was playing Wizard, I had 4 spells slots.

I enter a shop, I could buy a 4th spell slot. I bought it, I was still at 4 slots, not 5.

Well, first off, the Focus item says it "increases Glyph Slot Count to 4", so if you already had 4, it wouldn't do anything.

Secondly, you're playing version 0.05: Focus was removed in 0.051 as a quick fix for an actual bug with it.

Actually, the focus issue is with characters with 3 glyph slots, too. You won't see the 4th. It appeared on 0.051 for me.

The Focus issue was *only* for characters with 3 Glyph Slots; that was the whole point. The previous poster was trying to buy it with a Wizard that already has 4 Glyph Slots.

And it shouldn't be appearing in 0.051: it was replaced with the Bloody Sigil instead, which is a +10 Max HP item that also reduces damage the damage you deal by 20%.

You can repeat it as much as you want. I had the issue with a 3-slot character in 0.051. No amount of repeating what you said will change that fact.

Hey all -- what's a good way to kill Super Meat Boy in the factory? I'm having some trouble clearing the challenge dungeon.

Then you must not be playing the version linked in the topic thread (which was silently updated a day after the IndieGames post was made from 0.05 to 0.051), because there is no *trace* of Focus in the game anymore.

If you find the APHEELSIK Glyph or a shop selling the Poison Blade, then Super Meat Boy can be pretty easy. Altars to Dracul or Jehora can also be useful if you find them early enough.

This is my version:

I think it says 0.051 clear enough...

Then there's really nothing more I can suggest to you, because I have copies of both 0.05 and a newly downloaded 0.051, and there is absolutely no sign of the Focus item in memory or code when running 0.051.

I'm quite curious myself that people are still finding Focus in v0.051. I literally wiped it from the code when I heard about folk having trouble with it in .05

Thanks for the feedback, people. Will try to improve this steadily as time passes.

i just can't beat the fuckn crypt! whats the best tactic to beat it?
