Shown off at the latest SXSW in Austin, here's a nice portion of gameplay footage for Twisted Pixel's Comic Jumper. Apparently the game is going to be demoed at PAX East at the end of the month, so if you've got tickets to that, make sure to check it out.

I'm sorry, but this just does not look good at all. It becomes extremely repetitive just by watching the video, and that's a bad sign... and the way the enemies fly off to the sides when they die looks... well, stupid.

The NAME SAYS IT ALL.

Twister Pixel - We use polygons.

Yea this looks painfully repetitive and painfully unfunny. I hate it when people without a sense of humor try to inject comedy into their games.

lol @ the character design. wal-mart face and carl jr's star? are you serious? the game is nothing original anyway.. how many times are we going to get the same crappy one-rail beat em ups?

I disagree! Ok, yeah, the gameplay isn't revolutionary, and just like any game, it's probably more fun to play than to watch, but I think it looks great! I thought the dialogue was very well written. It's pretty rare when a game makes me laugh! The graphics were painful at first, but as I watched on I started to really like the style. If it comes out on steam I'm definitely gonna pick it up! The ironic thing is I've never liked beat-em-ups (Viewtiful Joe excluded)!

I'm split, the graphics and story looks very well made (even tho they could be a little more fast paced), but the gameplay looks very bland, it would work much better like the old arcades scroll beat-up games.

The art style's pretty good and matches the comic theme, but I also found most of the video painfully repetitive. I don't mind taking down waves of enemies, but all those bots just seemed to get in the way of the chase.

I personally didn't mind the enemies being thrown off into the background since they smash up the scenery nicely, and main character is locked on the horizontal plane anyway, but it might be nice to mix it up a bit by having them flying off in other directions - maybe out of the screen the way the Oddworld games used to do=) The way they run straight out and then turn to fight wasn't very realistic though.

I liked that there's a mix of gameplay styles in there (run and gunning, fighting, platforming, the sliding/almost on-rails parts). But yeah, I didn't find the humor particularly funny, just rehashing the same old stereotypes and discriminations, particularly against women. It's time to grow up, we can do better than this.

With a few changes, this could be a really good game I think.

Woah a lot of hate here. It's a work in progress - it has both side scrolling beat'em up like the classic Kung Fu and run and gunning reminiscent of Gunstar Heroes - if the quality of writing remains high then the game itself should be amusing.

i thought it was funny! i like the discourse between captain smiley and his star. i anticipate that gameplay will be improved over time.

Their last game, 'Splosion Man, was one of the best I played in 2008. I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt with this one. Looks promising, we'll see.

I really like the look of this. Bad Dad humour is my cup of tea (seriously). The run speed seems to be too slow though - That would put me off playing it. Everything else about Comic Jumper looks ace =)

Well done dudes at Twisted Pixel (and fast too!)

fire your writer now

I thought the writing was mostly really funny. Most games don't have good characters and I loved Brad. You guys are just haters haha. Unfortunately I sort of just wanted to skip through the gameplay to get to the next cut scene cus they were so funny.

Seriously, a lot of hate. While I'm not a fan of side scrolling beat em ups, I can appreciate the effort that went into making this a comic book like experience. Well done.

Hmm, not a fan of this. If it is only in this state because it is a WIP, I think they should of held out releasing footage for a bit longer. the look, the animation and speed of the gameplay all give me a bit of a sour taste in my mouth :( And that sucks, because i WANT to love this game.

This looks INCREDIBLE.

This is the ugliest thing ever.

Good production values for an indie game, everything else about it seems terrible.

Actually it seems like it could be pretty fun to play. Most platformers will look lame if you watch a video of the gameplay (seriously, unless you're the one playing, Mario would be a tame looking game). Each section of gameplay is pretty short and there are a nice variety of new mechanics as the game progresses.

Although I'm really not a fan of the initial boss character (The goofy Cranium person) everything else seems pretty entertaining.

I love 'Splosion Man, which I consider one of the by far best XBLA to date. Hopefully this game eventually will manage to live up to its spiritual predecessor.
