Shoot First is an action game with roguelike elements, featuring procedurally generated levels, an automap system, two-player co-op mode, an online high score table, and even AI-controlled companions to help you out during heated gunfights with denizens of the dungeon. Your character can only carry one weapon at a time, and three other equipment that you acquire during your adventure. Weapons are upgraded automatically after a prolonged period of use, but the bonuses don't carry over when you switch to another gun.

Like any roguelike, your objective here is to descend the staircase that leads to the next level. Sometimes the staircase is blocked by a locked door, so you must first find the yellow key hidden somewhere in the dungeon before proceeding to the exit.

Red potions can be quaffed to restore a tiny bit of health, and rescuing damsels in distress also have the same effect on your hero. There's no button to drop an item in your inventory, but you can swap them out when the inventory slots are full by picking up an object on the ground. (Windows, 3.23MB)

The random trap boulders made this really unfun to play.

Would be nice to get a windowed version (or the command to make it windowed), since currently it looks bad on my widescreen.

Pretty fun otherwise.

Lots of fun. It's always nice to see a game with an overwhelming enemy the player has to run away from. Does it have an end? I've gotten to level 14 so far.

This game is really awesome! Very glad to see that it has been released :)

Gives me that same feeling that Speluny gave me the first time I played it. Simple fun, and cruel as hell.

On a side note: are levels sometimes unbeatable? I just go stuck in a closed off section with no exit. I tried shooting all the walls, hitting the "use" button all over, and could find no way to open a way out.

Wow, this game is awesome: roguelike RPG Robotron!!

(also, wtf Tim W: do you have to rule the highscores for EVERY DAMN GAME IN EXISTANCE! CURSE YOUUU!!!)

In case the dev is reading this, I was killed by an unbeatable "trap room" (crushing walls w/ spawned monsters) when one of the monsters I had to kill was somehow spawned/pushed outside of the room, making it unreachable. :(

This game is amazing. I haven't been able to put it down since yesterday. Those Hunters are tough, but I have managed to kill one.

Also, I ran into the same glitch raigan mentioned, mob was spawned outside of the crushing walls, so I couldnt kill it.

Now that's a gem. Very good game.

I just got trapped in an unbeatable crushing-walls-room AGAIN :(

This game is really great. Some small complaints:

1) it's blurry because of my stupid widescreen+crappy ATI drivers (there's no "center and don't scale" option) and lack of an in-game windowed option.

2) it doesn't remember my input settings; also, all the control methods have flaws: keyboard allows fastest firing rate but makes aiming awkward, mouse results in RSI from basically hammering the button for the duration of the game, and gamepad also suffers RSI from tapping the shoulder button non-stop. Auto-fire would be greatly appreciated :)

3) every time i switch to a new gun, i feel like i made a mistake -- nothing else shoots perfectly straight like the default gun, which is a HUGE bonus for staying safe, and since lvls don't transfer over it always feels stupid to throw away a lvl5 gun for a lvl1 gun.

4) there are some situations where it seems impossible to avoid hitting spikes; anytime there's a hallway into a room with spikes 1 tile away from the hallway's "mouth", i can never move into the room without nicking myself on the spikes.

This is really addictive and fun though, despite those minor annoyances.

wait, I remembered another one :)

4) the inventory system is somewhat awkward

I don't know who this Beau Blyth character is but between this and Action Fist, it's impressive! The aesthetics and music are also strong, man..

gha, sorry -- last one :)

5) whatever weird-ass way the game is putting itself into fullscreen, after exiting i find all of my windows explorer windows resized to 320x200-ish and crammed them in the top-left corner..

I'll make sure Beau/Teknogames reads this, because I have similar annoyances as well. :)

raigan summed up pretty much anything I had to say about this game :P

Also, I agree about the boulders thing. Sometimes they are impossible to avoid, and given how scarce health potions are those little things start to add up.

Most of the guns aren't really better than the default, but the Room Raider is amazingly good.

The one time I tried Room Raider, it seemed like after the first couple levels it stopped adding bullets -- did this happen for you?

The thing about shooting straight is that it lets you sit in a hallway outside of a room and snipe away at enemies without putting yourself in danger; with every other gun you have to wade into the room and that's a lot riskier than just camping outside and spamming the room with bullets..

Too those of you complaining about the guns, I have no clue what you are talking about. The Room Raider is good, but the Assassin is God Tier, and the machine gun is good too. This comes from a guy thats been on the leaderboard for the last 2 days.

Only gun that isn't worth its salt is the sidewinder. Your better off with the pistol. But once again, Assassin is where its at.

What? What's even remotely redeemable about the assassin?

Powerhouse weapon. And the range thing isn't even that big of a deal, once you realize that 90% of the time your probably that close to an enemy anyways.

I have to disagree about the guns, *especially* the assassin; it's such an advantage to be able to just park far outside of a room and clear it without ever entering the "danger zone", thanks to perfectly straight shots and long range.

I really can't imagine taking out a boss or hunter with an assassin, unless maybe w/ the boulder boots -- otherwise there would be no way to get in, attack, and get out between volleys from the boss.

My best game (6th place score) was with the starting gun; the only reason I did so well is that I found the +3 armor, +3 helmet, and the lead leggings (+2?) in the first couple levels.

Are you kidding? Bosses go down like flies to the assassin. Admittedly, killing a hunter is hard to do with one, but why are you trying to kill an enemy that you can outrun, and doesnt reward you in anyway?

Also, the machine gun fires straight enough to basically outdo the pistol. I'm not saying that the pistol sucks, far from it, it works well, but for me, the hierarchy goes Assassin->Machine Gun->Room Raider->Pistol->Sidewinder.

None (other than the sidewinder) are noticeably less useful than the others, it just depends on what you feel comfortable with.

Your arguement for using the pistol (straight shot to snipe into a room) is sound, but it isnt so game breaking a thought that it invalidates the other weapons. The machine gun shoots straight enough, and the assassin more than makes up for it in terms of firepower.

Really great little game.

It's running pretty slowly on my decent enough laptop. Anyone else having similar problems?

I'm liking this... but can we please have a version that has scaleable windowed mode, and SAVE GAMES (even if it doesn't save score, I don't care).

The assassin might be good if you had a time limit, but hunters are the closest thing there is to one, and the assassin isn't a great choice against those so... yeah.

It might kill bosses quickly, but with any other gun you can take potshots from across the screen and kill bosses with absolutely no risk whatsoever. The assassin is good for when you get locked into a room though.

The sidewinder is more or less a straight upgrade from the pistol after it hits level 4 or so. Still probably not worth the trouble, especially since the machine gun is plenty good at level 1.

Bitches don't know about my 3rd place all time highscore under the name "BADASS BAMF".

I would love to play this, but this game has some serious display problem.

Why is it lowering the windows resolution to run the game?

@devs, please fix this ASAP;

It took me 40 mins on my laptop + TFT combo to get the resolution back, thanks for that "input not supported" lesson -.- (yeah blame my 24" screen to not support low res)

... ever heard of X2 or X3 zoom?

I would assume that the fullscreen/rez issues are a byproduct of how Game Maker does things and not necessarily under the dev's control

Maybe Derek could share however he did things in Spelunky? AFAICR that was also Game Maker and had fullscreen and x2/x3/x4 windowed modes.

I like the sidewinder. It sucks for those first couple levels, but once past about 4th it fires faster than the pistol, and has more power per shot. By level 7 or so, the ROF is almost as high as the machine gun.

Honestly the only gun I don't much care for is the assassin. God tier or not the pitiful range just isn't my style.

Any news on whether there'll be a patch or not? The game could be really great if he simply added a windowed version/widescreen support and fixed the closing wall traps.
