Hawken Q&A: Khang Le on Resource Management on Illal

Adhesive Games, formed of team members of Project Offset, will release Hawken through a free-to-play model on December 12. It was announced yesterday that the game will support the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset. The developer is currently putting the finishing touches on the garage where you customize your armored vehicle and is working on tutorials to train prospective pilots before they engage in combat on the virtual battlefield.

We met up with creative director Khang Le at the 2012 Anime Expo, taking place at the Los Angeles Convention Center, to hear how story and gameplay reinforce each other in the gritty mech combat title.

We know that Hawken takes place in the near future in an offworld colony starving for natural resources. How would you further describe the game's backstory?

Khang Le: Hawken takes place on a planet called Illal. A corporation has been tasked with terraforming this planet, leading to strides in technological advancement and a lack of moral restrictions on development. As a result, a form of nanotechnology used to pull metals from beneath the planet's surface has slowly caused ecological destruction. Mechs were initially brought on to aid in construction, but over the years as the natural resources have dwindled, these mechs have been repurposed as war machines and the inhabitants are fighting over all that's left.

Indie Royale Debuts Six-Game Getaway Bundle

The IndieGames co-created bundle site Indie Royale returns with the Getaway Bundle featuring six independent games, including the exclusive PC debut of Super Amazing Wagon Adventure.

First up is Futuremark's multiplayer FPS Shattered Horizon available for Windows on Steam. Celebrated by Strategy Informer for game mechanics that create "thought-provoking gameplay," Shattered Horizon offers unique combat features, realistic space gameplay, 32-player battles and huge levels equaling hours of gameplay.

The top 10 contributors to this bundle will receive a Shattered Horizon t-shirt. In addition, the top 5 contributors will also receive a meteorite sample from the 1947 Russian meteorite, Sikhote-Alin. NOTE: Shattered Horizon requires DirectX 10, a DirectX 10 compatible video card, and Windows Vista or Windows 7.

Demo: Mobiloid (Montrezina)

Monty Melby writes in with word that his robot-construction puzzler Mobiloid is nearing release. A free demo version is now available for download from developer Montrezina's website.

In Mobiloid, players build robotic vehicles piece-by-piece, and use them to roll, fly, and solve puzzles throughout a large interconnected world. Melby notes that the game has a Metroidvania structure, and players will encounter new areas through careful exploration and by using upgrades found throughout the adventure.

Mobiloid can be preordered for $9.99 at Desura, IndieCity, and mobiloid.com. The full version will be released August 29th.

Closure Coming To Steam September 7th

Eyebrow Interactive's monochromatic puzzle-platformer Closure is coming to Windows and Mac via Steam on September 7th.

Released as a downloadable title for the PlayStation 3 in March, Closure is an atmospheric side-scroller in which players must keep a light source nearby at all times in order to navigate pitch-black level layouts. The Steam version of Closure will include an unlockable developer commentary mode, and will be priced at $10 when it launches next month.

Closure will also be playable at PAX Prime's Indie Megabooth this weekend.

Indie Tools: GameMaker Conversion Program

gamemaker6.pngIndie Tools hasn't covered GameMaker just yet, but a) will soon do so and b) Ι'm pretty sure everyone is more or less familiar with the tool anyway. Besides, what I really wanted to let you know about would be this pretty handy and most recent discovery of mine: YoYo's Game Conversion Program. It's a utility that will convert GM 6.0 and 6.1 games to a file compatible with both Vista and Windows 7.

Should come in handy, especially if you are looking to save an older project of yours...

Reading Artificial Infinity

romantics.pngIt's not every day we let you know about books on gaming; then again a book searching for the parallels in the work of romantic painter Friedrich and, well, Notch is far from common and way too intriguing to ignore, and that's why Artificial Infinity is something you should definitely be interested in. Especially if you love your romantics or deeply care for the aesthetic side of gaming.

The book is a far-from-academic exploration and discovery of the hidden relationships between Romantic landscape paintings and videogames and, handily, is offering two of its chapters for free. Its author, Xavier Belanche, would apparently feel great visiting the super-secret headquarters of I.S..

An Evolution of Zelda with a Touch of Diablo: Evoland

evoland.jpgNicolas Cannasse walks players through a healthy heap of humor with his interpretation of action-adventure evolution in Evoland. Players start pre-Zelda on a monochromatic low-resolution computer, and then the display technology and the gameplay rules evolve as players find more chests.

The fighting evolves from nonexistence to Diablo-like. While health does not restore after leveling up in Evoland, it's not really necessary.

Evoland nails some of the basic Zelda mechanics (many staple weapons are absent) and hits the head on humor and theme categories. Its pixel evolution may make it a contender for graphics in Ludum Dare 24, too. My only complaint: the humorous achievement windows disappear a bit quickly.

Trailer: Music of the Spheres (Hamish Todd)

A 2D puzzle-shooter from sometimes games journalist Hamish Todd, Music of the Spheres is a lovely, delicate-looking title that functions on a simple idea: each bullet you fire will bounce and when they bounce, a specific glockenspiel note will be played. Scheduled for release in February 2013, Music of the Spheres will apparently be more 'puzzle' than 'shooter', something that will demand thoughtfulness as precision as opposed to Korean Starcraft player-level reflexes.

Freeware Game Pick: The Tower (Narrow Monolith)

How better to end a Monday than with a nifty little piece of freeware? The Tower is a newly-released first-person dungeon-crawl of sorts that will have you taking on the role of a prisoner trapped in what has been described as the 'worst place in the country'. Obviously, you want to escape this. As such, you're going to have to navigate the treacherous depths of the tower in an attempt to reach the sunlight once more. To do so, however, you're going to have learn how to move through and make use of near pitch-black darkness. Good luck.

Browser Game Pick: Strike of Rage (deepnight)

strikeofrage.jpg So, it's that time again and we all know what that means: an avalanche of awesome Ludum Dare titles. As usual, crowd favorite deepnight's back again with another entry. Entitled 'Strike of Rage', this slightly silly little beat 'em up will have you taking on the role of a rather upset desk monkey named Johnny Cash. Because he's unable to get the raise he wanted, he makes the decision to take his money by force. Naturally, this entails beating your colleagues into a pixelated pulp on the ground.
