Let's Multiplay: 7DFPS Online Multiplayer Games

7dfps logo.pngOur seven-day FPS challenge coverage continues, this time with a handful of online multiplayer games that I hope we can all explore together. Skimming through 200 entries and randomly stumbling upon multiplayer games with empty lobbies can be disappointing.

Developer Sophie Houlden agreed to be around virtually at the time of this post to play along in Splat Death Salad, a title with more customizable game modes than you can shake a busker's hat at.

Developer Alex Austin (Cryptic Sea) also availed himself for those wanting to play Sub Rosa, a point-based team game. Team 1 starts with documents the other two teams want, Team 2 starts with cash to trade with Team 1, and Team 3 starts with only guns and cars.

Marco di Timoteo's Splat Arena is a sort of capture the flag/take down the base type of two-team multiplayer. Players have to destroy the enemy tower by throwing the orb at the energy runes floating around it.

Finally, I couldn't try Jeremy Alessi's Swap Fire, since it seemed to require other players just to load a game. It sounds pretty neat: "Line of sight is not the only factor necessary to score or frag an opponent. Instead a successful hit instantiates a swap of combatants, meaning you must put yourself at risk to take someone else out."

Monstrous Rutabagas, Diggle Hell and Wizards Coming Soon To Dungeons of Dredmor

DLCs might not really be the most well-liked components of a game these days but I can't help but be excited about any reason to enjoy Dungeons of Dredmor even further. Entitled Conquest of the Wizardlands, Dungeons of Dredmor's latest DLC will apparently feature Wizard Graffiti, an assortment of new skills, balance tweaks, new foes, crusts (the new enhancement system is called Encrusting, yes) and Diggle Hell.

No official release date has been mentioned as of yet. However, the new installment will likely put you back a reasonable $2.99. Those interested in checking out the site for more details can do so here.

Browser Game Pick: ChronoCat (Ahmet Ali Batı)

Indie developer Ahmet Alie Batı's latest title is ChronoCat, a time-bending, browser-based puzzler developed for the 48-hour GDT Jam.

While many of the time-related mechanics in the game will be familiar to anyone who has played Braid (in one level, enemies only move when you move; in another, moving left reverses time), ChronoCat puts them in an interesting new context. Many of the levels are fairly challenging, and the rapidly changing gameplay provides a decent amount of variety.

(The man-made cat noises are also pretty great.)

Demo: Enola (The Domaginarium)

enola.pngBased in El Salvador The Domaginarium is a small yet ambitious indie studio that is currently working on a first-person horror adventure sporting the ominous sounding title of Enola. Enola, despite being reminiscent of a particularly lethal virus, is apparently the name of a desolate and rather strange island where evil has made its home and is having fun by murdering people. Enola is also the place where you, the brave adventurer, will have to solve puzzles, avoid death, get scared and, braving a most infamous cliché, uncover your own identity.

Judging by the freshly released and freely available Windows-only demo of the game, Enola is definitely something to keep an eye out for; provided you are not bothered by its unsettling atmosphere, that is. Even in this early, unpolished stage Enola manages to both disturb and scare and that can only be a very good sign indeed.

Oh, and if you like what you see and feel like helping out a small developer you can graciously purchase the alpha build of Enola for $9.99, thus gaining access to all its future updates and, of course, the proper game itself as soon as it is released. Enola will be priced at $14.99.

Browser Game Pick: Gare (prexen)

gare.pngGare combines the aesthetics of Tron, the gameplay of the venerable arena shooter genre, the mazes of Berserk and those Mechs everyone seems to be so fond of in one lovely action game definitely worth your time. Gare, you see, detailed wireframe visuals and atmospheric soundtrack aside, is a most addictive game with some simple yet satisfying upgrade mechanics, 10 levels to enjoy and more than a few special weapons and abilities to use.

Roll Your Own Octo-Levels With Octodad Mod Tools

Young Horses has released an editor for its octopus fatherhood sim Octodad, giving curious players the ability to modify scenes within the game.

"This is really only for hardcore people who want to play around a bit with the levels," the developer explains. "The tools we originally used to make this game are pretty crude and buggy, so only recommended for people with a lot of patience and curiosity! Unfortunately, we can't offer any support or updates for this editor because we're busy with the development of Dadliest Catch."

Two important things to note: the editor is Windows-only, and it lacks undo and redo functionality. Make sure to back up your original game files before tinkering with the editor, as it will make permanent changes. With those warnings in mind, hurry up and create something new and weird! Make Octodad proud!

Monaco is Mine and Only Mine: Single Player Video

IGF 2010 grand prize winner Monaco is nearing completion, and its developers posted on Twitter the following video that shows its single player mode in depth. The video editor Danny O'Dwyer says in a "couple of months' time" everyone will get their hands on the PC and console title.

Schatz hopped on YouTube to say that "the game has largely been covered as a frenetic 4 player party game, but I think this portrayal is actually how most people will end up playing the game. I'd consider this the definitive look at the game for now."

Stealthy, colorful, wonderful lighting effects, and more voice overs on the horizon, Monaco's polish is really starting to show.

Game Jams, New Voices May Not Help Game Design

oldchartgama.jpgIn a new feature on sister-site Gamasutra, designer Keith Burgun expands on his ideas of game design theory, writing that game jams and bringing new voices into the medium may not actually do much to further the science of design.

"There's an increasing trend of 'creating more disposable games'... These things can be great for the creators themselves, in that they are great practice at the skill of 'game development', but they are not generally helpful for the rest of us," writes Burgun.

Meanwhile, attending a talk given by independent developer Anna Anthropy, he felt that her call to bring in more voices -- echoed by many -- does not actually help solve the problem of making better games.

"According to her, our problem is that there's too much 'inbreeding', too much of us talking to ourselves; we need the infusion of as many new creative minds as possible to help take us into the future," Burgun writes.

"While this is primarily a positive message, I have one problem with it. In my view, this equates to a 'spray-and-pray' solution; a 'do what we're already doing, but more!' solution."

Glen Forrester on Enough Plumbers 2

A sequel to 2010's platform puzzler Enough Plumbers is coming in the next couple of months to Flash-installed browsers. Glen Forrester tells IndieGames Enough Plumbers 2 will be "a bigger, prettier, expanded version of the first game. The original was made in under two weeks and wasn't really meant to be successful (instead it's had millions of plays. oops), so this one is intended to revisit the idea and do things properly."

Forrester says fans keep asking for a sequel, too. "And it was the first game of mine anyone's done fan-art for, so it's special. Doing a sequel isn't such an exciting prospect, but if the players are still asking for a sequel I guess it means it's a good candidate for building something people will play."

Freeware Game Pick: Super Eagle (The Catamites)

Murder Dog IV creator The Catamites -- in collaboration with New Vaders and J Chastain -- has launched its freeware first-person shooter Super Eagle for Windows and Mac, developed as part of the 7DFPS game jam.

Super Eagle charges players with infiltrating a Nazi stronghold and destroying the abominations found within. Watch your funding levels, though; take too long to complete an area or absorb too much damage and you'll have to machine-gun your way through literal walls of paperwork in order to drum up support for your campaign.

This is good stuff -- I love the bizarre artwork, the running dialogue, and the Sega Genesis-style music. It also contains the greatest number of swastikas I've ever seen in a single video game, so that's...impressive, in a way?
