Browser Game Pick: Memento XII (deepnight)

memento.png No matter how you look at it, Ludum Dare veteran deepnight just seems to keep getting better and better at the whole 'design a game in an immoderately short amount of time' thing. However, unlike the last few games that he has been contributed, Memento XII is a little slower-paced. Crafted in the shape of a traditional point & click adventure game, Memento XII will put players into the shoes of an aging inmate. Here, you'll find yourself investigating the tiny world (that's the Ludum Dare theme this time around) that is your cell in an attempt to ... well, you'll find out. Part of the fun is in putting the protagonist's scattered memories together.

Indie Royale Profile: Depths of Peril (Soldak Entertainment)

How about something a little different for this bundle? Depths of Peril is a hack and slash action RPG that will feel right at home for longtime Diablo players and World of Warcraft fans. You've got your attacks, you've got your abilities, you've got your health and mana, you've got your clicking and you've got a bit of mindless looting fun. However, Depths of Peril transcends most Diablo clones by building in an overarching strategy that seems to borrow heavily from Civilization, with even perhaps a few DotA elements. It all adds up to a game that isn't quite like any other. Confused? I'll try to elaborate.

Browser Game Pick: Achievement Unlocked 3 (jmtb02 Studios)

Attention achievement hounds and trophy hunters: jmtb02 Studios has released Achievement Unlocked 3, a vastly expanded sequel with more unlockable fake awards than ever before.

Achievement Unlocked 3 introduces a story mode in which the series' elephant protagonist finds itself trapped in a maze ruled by a gluttonous hamster. Of course, this just provides a framework for more pointless yet strangely captivating gameplay objectives, as players have plenty of collectible items to find and new areas to discover in their quest to unlock a ridiculous set of 400 achievements.

It suffices to say that, even if you've mastered speedrunning the original game, this one will keep you busy for quite a while. A walkthrough video is also available, if you need some help completing the story.

Browser Game Pick: Tiny Island Adventure (Jussi Simpanen)

tiny island adventure.png Tiny Island Adventure is a Ludum Dare 23 entry, in which you are tasked with helping Lydia escape the tiny floating island that she inhabits. You must search for scrap metal and fuel in an attempt to build a rocket.

It's a run'n'jump platformer with a number of obstacles thrown in, although nothing should be too difficult that should keep the average player from completing the game within 10 - 15 minutes.

It might be short and rough around the edges but the presentation is charming. You can play it here.

Browser Game Pick: Roar Rampage (Neutronized)

roar rampage browser.pngAh, yes, the sheer and utter joy of smashing through buildings, crushing choppers and attacking those pesky human cities. A kind of joy I hadn't really experienced since the venerable Rampage ruled the arcades and one that Roar Rampage not only recreates, but actually enriches, what with its oh-so-modern physics engine and bold visuals.

Now, anyone care to find out how the thing plays? Well, the mouse controls the gloved, Godzilla-esque hand that will gloriously punch buildings, block bullets, destroy tanks and generally obliterate the human enemy, whereas the left and right arrow buttons will unsurprisingly move your alien-dinosaur thingie left and right. Simple, elegant and fun.

Ludum Dare 23 Brings Over 1100 Games

recluse.jpgIn an impressive showing for its 10-year anniversary, over 1100 "tiny world" themed games were developed for Ludum Dare 23, with more to come from the 72-hour Jam. We'll be picking out lots of great gems over the next few weeks, and I'm already fond of several titles below.

Studio Miniboss (Out There Somehwere) produced Planet 161 a multi-weapon, puzzle-platformer with a "small and claustrophobic level design." Andrew Morrish (Super Puzzle Platformer) created puzzler Scape, where players must watch their steps as they plant trees and later turn terrain fertile.

Matt Thorson pits tiny world versus tiny world in the two-player galactic fighter Ra Ra: Extreme Star Boxing. Finally, I recommend the above-pictured metroidvania Recluse from Pedro Camara, whose "expanding" mechanic was neat to experience, despite the overuse of white flashes.

Judging will end in 20 days, which just doesn't seem like enough time to play all of the Ludum Dare 23 games. Be sure to email us if you stumble across any particularly awesome titles or suggest some others in the comments below. Once again Happy 10th Birthday, Ludum Dare!

Linux Tycoon Adds Online Multiplayer, Coming To Android And iOS

Bryan Lunduke's Linux Tycoon isn't content with merely being the world's first Linux distro sim. No, no -- now it's the world's first massively multiplayer online Linux distro sim. That should keep him one step ahead of his competitors.

The new online mode in Linux Tycoon pits your own simulated Linux distribution against distros created by fellow players, and ranks them in terms of popularity. Online play is free and has no subscription fee. What's more, Lunduke plans to release a server application that will allow players to further customize their multiplayer simulated Linux distro building experience.

Lunduke additionally revealed that Linux Tycoon is in the works for iOS and Android platforms, though a release date has not been announced for either version. Linux Tycoon is priced at $4, and is available as a DRM-free download via Lunduke's site for Windows, Mac, and Linux.

Indie Royale Profile: Tobe's Vertical Adventure

Tobe just wants to stay at home and play video games, but his ladyfriend Nana is insisting that he come on a treasure hunt adventure with her. First world problems, am I right? Luckily, said treasure hunt adventure comes in the form of an absolutely delightful platforming game that can be played by your lonesome or with your very own Nana or Tobe. The wonderful pixel art, the slow but tight platforming controls and the solid level design makes for a great platformer with a retro look and a modern feel. There's a lot to love about it.

The basic structure of the game sees Tobe (or Nana, or both) descend into a cave to find a treasure map. Each cave is basically a lengthy vertical tunnel built out of tile based platforms, vines, spikes and other such fun stuff. All you need to do is hop and bop your way to the bottom of the map, collecting treasure, chests and baby animals, and then open the big chest at the end. At that point, the level will collapse and shift, and you then have about a minute and a half to reach the top of the level and grab on to the escape rope. It's a clever shift from slow methodical treasure hunting to fast paced escapes, and puts a nice little twist into the design of every level.

Freeware Game Pick: .heartbeats (Sebastian Trelles)

A visual novel without graphics? Yes, that's exactly what .heartbeats is. Built in Ren'Py, Sebastian Trelles' .heartbeats is a brief but interesting experience, one that earned special mention at the IDEAME++ event in Spain. It explores the lives of four seeming disconnected individuals and how certain decisions can influence life and death. I kinda like how heartbeats have been used here to measure whether or not someone's in a good situation or close to doing something stupid. Though far from perfect, it still warrants at least one playthrough.

Ludum Dare 23: More Keynotes Should be Playable

Chevy Ray Johnston's interactive Ludum Dare 23 keynote, celebrating the event's 10-year anniversary, wins for the biggest smile-inducing moment today (which is tough given Humble's wacky announcement trailer).

In the spirit of Ludum Dare, Johnston has posted the source code, which includes everything in the keynote presentation. Protip: when you see rainbows, click on the the moving square several times.

We're all pretty excited to see what comes of the jam and compo this weekend. While waiting, heaps of warm-up games are available to play. Happy 10th birthday, Ludum Dare!
