Minecraft: Pi Edition advocates do-it-yourself programming

minecraftpi.jpgHave you picked up a Raspberry Pi yet? Perhaps you had a fiddle with it and then buried it in a drawer -- or maybe it's become part of your development set-up. Either way, it's hard to deny that this little-computer-that-could is a huge breakthrough for game development, especially where kids learning to code are concerned.

And now there's even more reason for both small and big kids alike to pay attention to the device, as Minecraft studio Mojang announced a special free edition of the ultra-popular indie game for the Raspberry Pi.

Minecraft: Pi Edition will be completely free to download, and will feature a version of the Pocket Edition with support for multiple programming languages.

"The Raspberry Pi project resonates very strongly with the Mojang spirit," claims Mojang's chief architect Daniel Frisk in a Gamasutra interview. "The emphasis on creativity versus passive consumption, the do-it-yourself spirit and the pricing makes it available for all kinds of exploration and tinkering for curious people of all ages.

"Also [there's] the coolness of having a credit card-sized computer running Minecraft," he adds.

I want STEALER to be an anime, and I mean this as my most sincere form of flattery. ShinnyMetal's music. The cyberpunk look. Journey to Hammerdale developer Winged Doom has nailed it. What was once a 100% Flashback clone is now "something like Sokoban, but platformer, with focusing on atmosphere and exploration," says the Windows game's ModDB page.

Will STEALER deliver as a game? I may not want to know. The wonderful aesthetics from this trailer provide enough replay value already.

Release: Miner Wars 2081 (Keen Software House)

Following up on a recent success with the Steam Greenlight service, Keen Software has released its "6DOF survival space simulation shooter" Miner Wars 2081 as a digital download via Steam, Desura, Impulse, GamersGate, and its official website.

Miner Wars 2081 offers a quest in which players scavenge destructible and persistent environments in the aftermath of the destruction of all planetary objects in the solar system. Though gameplay largely focuses on survival and resource management, players can also accept missions in which they will rescue survivors, race spacecraft, and explore abandoned vessels, among other tasks.

The game supports cooperative multiplayer for up to 16 players, and also includes a 16-player Deathmatch mode. Miner Wars 2081 is priced at $19.99.

Freeware Game Pick: Anamnesis, of Renascents and Monsters (Jose Ignacio Moreno Ferrer)

anamnesis.pngAnamnesis, of Renascents and Monsters is a truly ambitious game. It tries to recreate the sensation of playing a traditional pen-and-paper RPG in a single-player computer game. And no, it doesn't attempt to follow the standard CRPG way of doing things. Anamnesis uses a text heavy interface instead and has you making everything from strategic choices and conversations to exploring and managing your units via what can only be described as a choose-your-own-adventure-esque system. Happily, this works brilliantly, as do both the setting and the overall plot, even though my favourite bit has to be the character creation process; it's really simple, unlike anything else in digital gaming and yet lets you make a character that feels actually interesting.

Anamnesis can be downloaded for free for Windows [direct d/l], Linux [direct d/l] and Mac [direct d/l]. Also do keep in mind that the project is far from finished and stuff is still being constantly added to it.

Demo: Rush Bros. (XYLA)

rush bros.pngFollowing a retro aesthetic mindset yet simultaneously staying fiercely contemporary in the way it looks, glows and plays, Rush Bros is a most intriguing arcade thingy to look out for. It also is a bit like Audiosurf, mind you, as it can pretty successfully use your own music collection to alter its gameplay ways and definitely has bits of Canabalt in it too. Even reminds me of Mario when looked at from a certain (odd) angle. Better yet, forget what I'm talking about and try its enlightening demo (PC/Mac) out, as Rush Bros. is definitely much more than the sum of a few tired game analogies. It's also very enjoyable indeed.

Rush Bros. is expected to be released for Windows and Mac sometime during Q1 2013, and those interested in seeing it appear on Steam should probably visit its Greenlight page.

GDC donates IGDA Student Scholarship passes for GDC 2013

scholars.jpgGame Developers Conference organizers have once again donated 25 All-Access Conference passes for students to attend GDC 2013 via the IGDA scholarship program.

The International Game Developers Association Scholarships Program is accepting applications for its GDC 2013 scholarships until January 11, 2013. The program is open to all students and recent graduates in fields related to game development.

The IGDA scholarships for GDC 2013 will include full access to the conference, mentorship from members of industry, and chances to talk to senior figures and to visit some of the Bay Area's development studios while in California for the show.

The IGDA is a not-for-profit membership organization serving individuals who create video games, and is dedicated to improving developers' careers and lives through community, professional development, and advocacy. GDC has been donating passes for students since the IGDA Scholarship program began in 2001.

Trailer: The Official (Tymon Zgainski)

After one and a half years of work on the project, indie developer Tymon Zgainski teases his upcoming first-person adventure game The Official in the newly launched trailer above.

Gameplay in The Official begins with the player trapped in an office building at night, and things soon go awry. Exploration is apparently done Myst-style, with the player moving between various predefined points in the game's environments. Zgainski notes that The Official was inspired by "escape the room"-style games, and aims to "give the players a situation to solve with minimum, raw information about it."

A firm release date has not been announced, though Zgainski notes that the game "might be out in 2013."

Browser Game Pick: Transmorpher (5Hippos)

transmorpher.jpg If The Thing was capable of having a cuter, cartoon-y cousin, it'd probably be the green blob in Transmorpher. A puzzle game that will have you taking the role of the aforementioned, Transmorpher will have you navigating the usual gauntlet of electric barriers, air vents and treacherous platforms in an attempt to, well, get somewhere. Along the way, it'll also have you absorbing other aliens and consuming scientists in your quest to advance. Yuuup.

Kickstarter: Coming Out On Top (Obscura)

Coming Out On Top confuses me, just a little. According to the Kickstarter website, it's supposed to be the story of a college kid who has finally come out of the closet to his closest friends. Coming Out On Top, which comes with a $5000 funding goal, is supposed to be an interactive story of sorts, a dating simulation except with good-looking chaps as opposed to a mix of genders. It's a pretty cool idea (we really don't have enough non-heterosexual stuff in this industry) but I can't help but worry if this is going to be a huge mess of stereotypes. Religious quarterback deeply buried in the closet? Yeah. Totally not a trope. Still, there is a chance that this may turn out kind of awesome, naughty bits and all. What do you think? There's also a demo for those interested in poking at the preliminary offering.
